7 Things You Didn't Know About Your Mattress

Do you own a conventional innerspring or foam mattress? If so, you may be surprised to learn what secrets it may hold (or be hiding).

1. Chemicals, chemicals, chemicals. Most innerspring mattresses contain harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde, toluene, and, if it was treated for dust mites, pesticides.

2. And more chemicals! Many manufacturers spray on toxic chemicals in order to pass the federally-mandated open flame test. Chemicals can certainly prevent a mattress from burning too quickly, but they aren't necessary in a natural mattress.

3. Toxic glues. Oodles of glue hold most mattresses together. Almost all mattresses are made with components--springs, foam, fiber, ticking, insulating materials. These components are primarily held together with chemical adhesives and other artificial--and largely toxic--bonding agents.

4. It may have a short memory. Your memory foam mattress may be comfortable now, but it likely won't be for long. Pressure relief from a natural latex mattress will last a lot longer than pressure relief from a memory foam mattress.

5. Poor quality fillers. Polyurethane foam--a commonly used, toxic substance--is contained in almost all conventional mattresses for softness and support. It's cheaply made and thus helps keep prices down...but it's not made to last.

6. It may contain less wool than you thought. If you were told that your mattress contains wool and dacron, it's very likely that it's almost all dacron and almost zero wool (because natural wool is expensive).

7. It's all puffed up...for now. What's the main difference between your 17" mattress and your neighbor's 10" mattress? More than likely, AIR! Unfortunately, once it's gone, it's pretty tough to get air back into a mattress.

Unlike conventional mattresses, Savvy Rest Organic mattresses are made with 3-inch layers of natural latex (Dunlop or Talalay) in personalized combinations of Soft, Medium and/or Firm that provide the right cushioning and support for your body. In lieu of toxic flame retardants, Savvy Rest organic mattresses have certified organic wool in their casings, a natural flame barrier. And, because Savvy Rest natural latex mattresses are so comfortable and dependable, they're backed by a 20-year warranty.
