Ark II
A mobile storehouse of scientific knowledge
ARK II:"For millions of years, Earth was fertile and rich. Then pollution and waste began to take their toll. Civilization fell into ruin. This is the world of the 25th century. Only a handful of scientists remain. Men who have vowed to rebuild what has been destroyed...this is their achievement... Ark II, a mobile storehouse of scientific knowledge, manned by a highly trained crew of young people. Their mission: to bring the hope of a new future to mankind."
This live action kids show ran on CBS from September 11, 1976 to December 18, 1976. But, CBS did show reruns for several years. There are 15 episodes total and it has been released on DVD.
Terry Lester, the handsome tall blond actor who played Jonah on this series, went on to work on various soap operas. Probably his best known role was as Jack Abbott on "The Young and The Restless" starting in 1980 and lasting till he left that series in 1989. He also had a role in another 70's classic, this time on prime time... the TV movie "KISS Meets The Phantom of the Park" with of course, the rock group KISS back in 1978. Sadly, Terry passed away from a series of heart attacks in 2003.

Bigfoot Raises An Orphaned Boy!

BIGFOOT AND WILDBOY: A Sid and Marty Krofft creation. It was originally a 15 minute segment on the "Kroft Super Show". In 1979, the show was changed into a 30 minute stand alone series. There are 20 episodes total; 8 from the "Krofft Super Show" stint and 12 from the stand alone series. The premise of the show was that Wildboy was orphaned at a very early age and taken in and raised by Bigfoot. The two fought evil doers in what ever form they took. To my knowledge, the entire series has never been released on DVD, but a few episodes have shown up on various compilation discs of Kroft shows. Actor Ray Young, who played Bigfoot, died in 1999 of lung cancer.
Does anyone know what Joseph Butcher (Wildboy) is up to these days, or even any of the other cast members?

Now the constant companion to the Teen Angels: Brenda, Dee Dee and Taffy, in their hilarious, and sometimes scary mystery missions. Get ready for Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels!
Captain Caveman And The Teen Angels, Brenda, Dee Dee and Taffy are crime solvers patterned after prime time show "Charlie's Angels". The Captain, affectionately nick named "Cavey" by the girls was thawed out of a block of ice. He has super strength and all kinds of gadgets and things buried in his fur. His club allows him to fly and his trademark cry is "Captain Caaaaaavemannnnn".
The Captain was a 10 minute segment on the Scooby's All-Star Laff-A-Lympics and Scooby's All-Stars from 1977 to 79. In 1980 they were given their own stand alone series that gave us 16 new episodes.

Devlin
Inspired by 70's daredevil Evil Knievel?

DEVLIN: This 1974 Hannah-Barbera cartoon was inspired by real life dare devil stunt rider, Evil Knievel. Ernie Devlin was a stunt rider for a traveling circus and he was guardian to his younger sister, Sandy and brother, Todd since their parents had died. Sixteen half hour episodes were made of this ABC cartoon. It hasn't been released on DVD yet, but keep your fingers crossed, maybe the powers that be will eventually get around to it!

Electra-Fantastic! It's Electra Woman and Dyna Girl
Soap Diva Diedra Hall As A Saturday Morning Super Heroine

Electra Woman and Dyna Girl: A 15 minute segment on "the Krofft Super Show" during that show's first season. In their day jobs Lori and Judy (Dyna Girl) were reporters for "Newsmaker" Magazine. When trouble brewed they became Electra Woman and Dyna Girl. Assisting them in their crime fighting jobs was scientist and inventor Frank Helflin who came up with all kinds of gadgets for them to use. This show was a take off on the old Batman series of the 1960's. There were a total of 8 two part episodes.

The Funky Phantom
"It's A Funky Phantom! The Spirit of 1776, Even. At Your Service".

THE FUNKY PHANTOM: Skip, Augie, April and their dog Elmo take refuge out of a rain storm, in an old abandoned house, one summer day. While there, they move the hands on an old grandfather clock and when it chimes, out pops the ghost of Jonathan Wellington "Mudsy" Muddlemore and his cat Boo. It seems ole Mudsy was a bit of a coward during the Revolutionary War, he hid in the clock from British soldiers and then couldn't get out again. But, don't cry... cause he is now our favorite "Funky Phantom"! Hannah Barbara produced this show and there are 17 episodes. It ran on ABC during the 1971-72 TV season. Without a doubt, this was an attempt to capitalize on the popularity of Scooby Doo. If you notice, Augie sort of resembles Shaggy from Scooby Doo, but not as closely as some of the other shows from the same time frame. It has yet to be released on DVD.
The Voice Talents For The Show:

The Ghost Busters
Forrest Tucker and Larry Storch As Ghost Busters

THE GHOST BUSTERS: There were 15 episodes of this live action show that came years before the big box office movie called Ghost Busters (that had nothing to do with this show!). Forrest Tucker and Larry Storch (remember these guys from F-Troop) played partners in a detective agency who usually got calls to go investigate a place that was having some sort of paranormal disturbances. The show was filled with silly slapstick humor and it aired on ABC in 1975-76. Forrest, died in 1986 of throat cancer. The complete series was released on DVD in 2007.

The Groovie Goolies
Sabrina The Teenage Witch's Buddies

THE GROOVIE GOOLIES produced by Filmation Studios were drawn to be funny and not scary. The show was a mixture of "laugh in" type humor and actually was a spin off of the cartoon, "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" which in turn was a spin off of from the Archies Show. This show actually produced a hit song for Daddy Dewdrop (Richard Mondo) called "Chick A Boom". Richard produced a lot of the music on the Groovie Goolies. Howard Morris (who you might remember as Ernest T. Bass from the classic Andy Griffith Show) and Larry Storch (remember him from F-Troop as Corp. Agarn) did a lot of the voices for this show. The complete series is out on DVD.
The Groovie Goolies finally went into syndication in 1978 and their show became an anthology show called "The Groovie Goolies and Friends". The "friends" were other Filmation shows that were shown on a rotating basis, shows like "M.U.S. H." a cartoon take off on the movie M.A.S.H. starring dogs who were posted at an Artic fort, "Lassie's Rescue Ranger", "The New Adventures of Gilligan", "My Favorite Martian" among others.

The Hudson Brothers Razzle Dazzle Show
Razzle Dazzle Sit Yourself Down! Razzle Dazzle It's Time To Turn It On!

THE HUDSON BROTHERS RAZZLE DAZZLE SHOW:The brothers visit Saturday mornings after their successful stint in prime time. They sang, danced, told jokes and were actually pretty good at it. My favorite part was Brett as little kid, Chucky Margolis and Mark as his best friend, Allan. Oh and one can't forget the late Rod Hull with his puppet Emu. Rod passed away in 1999, he never recovered from injuries sustained in a fall.

Josie And The Pussycats: Long Tails and Ears For Hats
Cheryl Ladd Cartoon Singing Voice

JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS, created by Ruby-Spears, was designed in the same vein as Scooby Doo. Crime solving teenagers who sing on the side... or is it singing teenagers who solve mysteries on the side?? Hmm, we have seen the formula before. Cheryl Ladd who would go on to star in "Charlie's Angels" did the singing voice for the drummer, Melody. It was one of Cheryl's first professional jobs in Hollywood. The complete series is available on DVD.

The Kids From C.A.P.E.R.
Four In A War, Evermore, Against Crime

THE KIDS FROM C.A.P.E.R. Gosh, what can I say about this show, I watched it faithfully and had a little bit of a crush on John Lansing, who played Doc. Man, check out his blue suit!! Of course, finding little snippets from it on places like Youtube, I can only sit and shake my head, wondering what I ever saw in the show. But, hey, I was 11 or so years old, I wasn't that difficult to please TV wise back then.
Anyway, this was a live action show. C.A.P.E.R. stood for the "Civilian Authority for the Protection of Everybody, Regardless" and these guys operated as an undercover unit for the town of Northeast South Weston. Geesh, I am not making this up, honestly. Four young guys, each having their own skill made up this team.
* PT, was the leader of the group and had a head for gadgets AND a super strong sense of smell and actor Steve Bonino brought PT to life. IMDB doesn't have a lot of credits listed for Steve, actually, the last thing was a movie done in 1980, but it does list him as being a sound track performer for two movies done in 2003. Anyone know where Steve is and can give a real update on what he has been up too?
* Bugs had super strength and speed and would fill with rage when the word "bananas" was uttered and usually it was said when he was trying to apprehend a bad guy. I don't remember it ever being revealed as to why he reacted in such a strange way to the word....anyone out there remember the reason....was one even given? I guess it might not have been on the air long enough for the writers to have gotten that far into explaining things. :) Actor Cosie Costa brought Bugs to life. Cosie's last recorded TV role was in a 1996 role on "Walker Texas Ranger" Anyone have any idea what Cosie has been up too lately?
* Doomsday was a gentle and sweet guy and he had the ability to speak to animals. Actor Biff Warren played Doomsday and, sadly, he passed away in 1993 at the young age of 38.
* Doc was the handsome and smart hunk of the foursome who made girls swoon. Actor John Lansing brought Doc to life and he is still in the entertainment business doing, mostly behind the scenes work, especially on the Chuck Norris TV series, "Walker, Texas Ranger", where he wrote, directed and produced some episodes, and even did a stint or two in front of the camera.
The show lasted for only 13 episodes and does have a catchy theme song that is probably more memorable than the series itself. It's never been released on DVD as far as I know.
There was a Caper album put out at the time the show was on the air, but it doesn't have the catchy theme song included on it.

Lidsville: The Land of Living Hats
Charles Nelson Reilly and Butch Patrick in a Sid and Marty Krofft Creation!

LIDSVILLE: Charles Nelson Reilly as Hoodoo, the evil magician who runs Lidsville, the Land of Hats. The show starred Butch Patrick (remember his as Eddie Munster) as Mark, a young boy who gets a bit too nosy while watching "Merlo The Magician" (played also by Riley) perform at a local amusement park. After the show, Mark, decides to sneak into Merlo's dressing room and have a closer look at his magic hat which turns out to be a mistake. As soon as Mark picks up the hat, it begins to grown in size until he is able to crawl onto the brim and next thing you know, it shakes and he goes falling into Lidsville where he is befriended by the talking hats. With the help of Weenie the Genie, who was at one time a prisoner of Hoodoo's, Mark and his friends try to come up with a way to get him back home. There are 17 episodes and the show is a Sid and Marty Kroft creation. It ran on ABC TV during the 1971-72 TV season and Mark never did make it back home before the series ended. :( Sadly, Charles died in 2007 of complications from pneumonia. The complete series was released on DVD in 2005.

Rick Springfield As A Cartoon In Mission: Magic!
If Your Mission is Magic Your Love Will Shine Through

MISSION MAGIC Rick Springfield as himself living in an alternate world only accessible via a door drawn on a magic chalk board....sounds pretty incredible doesn't it, but it's a real show. The Adventurer's Club headed by "witchy" teacher Miss Tickle (a take off on the word "mystical") gets invited into Rick's world to solve mysteries and the best part, each episode Rick would perform a song. I have read that Rick wasn't too thrilled with the idea of making this series, but he was trying to get his music career started here in the US and the powers that be thought this would do great things for his music career.
Sadly, the show didn't last long, and Rick all but faded from view in the music scene (until the 80's with his huge hit, "Jesse's Girl). But, he kept busy making guest appearances on TV shows and some where along the way he lost his wonderful Australian accent (so he could get more work in American TV from what I have read... hey, he has bills to pay like we all do.) But, good things come to those who wait (and work hard!) and Rick emerged super successful with his music career in the 80's and hasn't looked back.
Thanks for the great 70's (and beyond) TV and music memories, Rick! Bless you!

The Secrets of Isis
Oh Mighty Isis

THE SECRET OF ISIS: Andrea Thomas (Joanna Cameron) was a high school science teacher who, while on an archeological dig in Egypt found an amulet that belonged to an ancient queen named Hatshepsut. The amulet granted the wearer the powers of the Goddess Isis. "With this amulet you and your descendants are endowed by the goddess Isis with the powers of the animals and the elements. You will soar as the falcon soars, run with the speed of gazelles and command the elements of sky and earth" or so the narration went. This female super hero was created as a counter part to the series Shazam. Even though Mary Marvel exists, Filmation, the studio that produced both Shazam and Isis, wanted a character they had the rights too and they created Isis. There are 22 episodes that span 2 seasons from 1975-77. Isis and Shazam did crossover appearances on each others shows occasionally.

Chase Songs From Scooby Doo
Themes, Chase Songs and Background Music

Those meddling kids and their mangy mutt were always getting chased by one phantom, ghoul or ghost or another. Here are some of those cool songs that played while the bad guys chased Scooby and the Gang all over the place. Who can forget such classic lyrics as "I'm in love with an ostrich"? Oh, there is a gem from the late Jerry Reed, "Pretty Mary Sunlight".

Scooby-Doo's Snack Tracks: The Ultimate Collection
There have been at least two generations who were first introduced to ghosts, haunted houses, and mysteries from Scooby-Doo and his pals--Shaggy (the goofy stoner), Freddy (the responsible one), Daphne (the looker), and Velma (the brains, and a sentimental favorite). But did you know that Scooby is only a nickname? (For that matter, so is Shaggy.) Or that there have been four separate theme songs, for the series' different incarnations? (That's including the lean Scrappy-Doo years.) Filling out this collection are the oh-so-groovy tunes that served as background and chase-scene music in some of the best episodes of the series, like "Seven Days a Week," from Scooby's Night with a Frozen Fright. Other highlights here are the Monkees' Davy Jones with "I Can Make You Happy" and the closing track, a dance-oriented remix of the theme song. Neither of the songs are particularly good, but they're plenty of fun just the same.

Shazam!
(S)olomon (H)ercules (A)tlas (Z)eus (A)chilles (M)ercury Spells SHAZAM!

SHAZAM: This half hour live action show gave us a total of 27 episodes that spanned 3 seasons from 1974 to 77. Billy Batson (Michael Gray) and his guardian just known as Mentor (Les Tremayne who passed away in 2003) traveled the countryside and found themselves mixed up in all kinds of interesting adventures. When someone would find themselves in a situation that required rescuing, Billy Batson would utter the word "Shazam" and would transform into Captain Marvel. Jackson Bostwick played Captain Marvel in the first season (17 episodes) the role was then assumed by actor John Davey who wore the cape for 11 episodes. This show is yet to be released on DVD, but we can keep hoping that it will be soon! Oh, and Shazam is gotten by taking the first letter of the following names "Solomon", "Hercules", "Atlas", "Zeus", "Achilles" and "Mercury", these are the elders who empower Billy to become Captain Marvel.
