70's TV on DVD
Ark II was a mobile store house of scientific knowledge
ARK II: A live action show about three young scientists who travel in a high tech RV named the ARK II, helping people who are in need. The earth has finally been ravaged by war and pollution and it's the job of this young trio to get things moving again in the right direction. This show aired on CBS from September 11, 1976 to December 18, 1976 with reruns shown for several years afterward.Terry Lester, the handsome tall blond actor who played Jonah on this series, went on to work on various soap operas. Probably his best known role was as Jack Abbott on "The Young and The Restless" starting in 1980 and lasting till he left that series in 1989. He also had a role in another 70's classic, this time on prime time... the TV movie "KISS Meets The Phantom of the Park" with of course, the rock group KISS back in 1978. Sadly, Terry passed away from a series of heart attacks in 2003.
The complete series was released onto DVD in 2006 and you get not just the complete series but some bonus material as well such as commentary tracks on two episodes, a 30 minute documentary about the birth of the series, and even the insert in the DVD case is like a little book of trivia and things like that. A really nice little package for this often forgotten live action 70's kids show.

The Addams Family
The 1973 Animated Series
THE ADDAMS FAMILY Our favorite mysterious and spooky family, The Addams' came to Saturday morning TV as a cartoon version of themselves on September 23, 1972 in an episode of The New Scooby Doo Movies titled "Wednesday is Missing". John Astin, Carolyn Jones, Ted Cassidy and Jackie Coogan would lend their voices to this fun outing.Beginning in 1973, NBC would air the Hannah Barbera produced Addams Family in their first official animated series that graced us with a total of 16 episodes. Our favorite family was traveling across the country in a Victorian RV. Ted Cassidy and Jackie Coogan were the only Addams Family actors to lend their voices to this animated outing.
The complete series was released on DVD in 2010, the set has 4 discs with all 16 fun filled episodes.
Around the World in Eighty Days
This 16 episode cartoon series premiered on NBC on September 9, 1972. It was based on the classic novel of the same name by Jules Verne.Phileas Fogg makes a bet with Lord Mace that he can make it around the world in 80 days. The motivation for this bet, to prove himself worthy of marrying Lord Mace's niece, Belinda.
This series is scheduled for a March 2012 DVD release.

Captain Caveman is the world's first super hero!
A Cartoon Take Off Of Charlie's Angels
CAPTAIN CAVEMAN While this show was not one of my favorite cartoons, he was watchable in a pinch. Imprisoned in a block of ice for millions of years, Captain Caveman was finally set free by the "Teen Angels", three cute teenage girls by the names of Brenda, Taffy and DeeDee and together they would solve mysteries. This was said to be a take off on the successful prime time series "Charlie's Angels", but I can't really say that this is true, although it wouldn't surprise me.Mel Blanc voiced the Captain while Vernee Watson, gave her voice to Dee Dee Sykes who was the brains of the trio. Marilyn Schreffler, who, sadly, died of liver cancer at age 42, gave her voice to Brenda, the more shy of the three girls and last but certainly not least, Laurel Page brought our zany Taffy to life.
The show, a Ruby-Spears creation, produced by Hannah-Barbera, was originally a 10 minute segment on the Scooby's All-Star Laff-A-Lympics and Scooby's All-Stars from 1977 to 1979 before being given a stand alone series in 1980.
The series has yet to be released onto DVD.
Devlin inspired by 70's stunt rider Evil Knievel?
DEVLIN: I so wish this show would be released onto DVD as it was one of my favorites. Not a lot of folks remember this show, it seems and maybe that is why is lasted only 16 episodes as not too many folks tuned in to watch. Anyway, this Hannah Barbera cartoon was from 1974 and was inspired by the real life adventures of dare devil stunt rider, Evil Knievel. Ernie Devlin was a stunt rider for a traveling circus and he was raising his younger sisters, Sandy and brother, Todd, since the death of their parents. Each week there was a mystery of sorts to be solved or some problem that the Devlin's found themselves involved in. This show wasn't a comedy, but instead a drama piece. I am not sure if there was any middle ground here, you either liked the show or you didn't. :) Devlin Opening theme
It's the Funky Phantom!
Jonathan Wellington "Mudsy" Muddlemore is The Funky Phantom
THE FUNKY PHANTOM Skip (Mickey Dolenz, Augie (Tommy Cook), April (Kristina Holland) and their dog Elmo take refuge out of a rain storm, in an old abandoned house, one summer day. While there, they move the hands on an old grandfather clock and when it chimes, out pops the ghost of Jonathan Wellington "Mudsy" Muddlemore (Daws Butler) and his cat Boo. It seems ole Mudsy was a bit of a coward during the Revolutionary War, he hid in the clock from British soldiers and then couldn't get out again and died in there...but, don't cry... cause he is now our favorite "Funky Phantom"! Hannah Barbara produced this show and there are 17 episodes. It ran on ABC during the 1971-72 TV season. Without a doubt, this was an attempt to capitalize on the popularity of Scooby Doo. If you notice, Augie sort of resembles Shaggy from Scooby Doo, but not as closely as some of the other characters shows from the same time frameLINKS TO EXPLORE

The Ghost Busters
Forrest Tucker and Larry Storch As Ghost Busters
THE GHOST BUSTERS: There were 15 episodes of this live action show that came years before the big box office movie called Ghost Busters (that had nothing to do with this show!).Forrest Tucker and Larry Storch (remember these guys from F-Troop) played partners in a detective agency who usually got calls to go investigate a place that was having some sort of paranormal disturbances. The show was filled with silly slapstick humor and it aired on ABC in 1975-76. Forrest died in 1986 of throat cancer. The complete series was released on DVD in 2007.
The Groovie Goolies were kinda strange and real funny!
THE GROOVIE GOOLIES : was a series produced by Filmation Studios and was meant as a funny take off on scary monsters like Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy and The Wolfman. These guys were prat falling, joke telling lovable goofs and got their own show when they were spun off from parent cartoon, "Sabrina the Teenage Witch", which in itself was a spin off from "The Archies Show".Richard Mondo, who produced a lot of the music used in the show had a hit song, "Chick a Boom" using the name Daddy Dewdrop. Howard Morris (who you might remember as Ernest T. Bass from the classic Andy Griffith Show) and Larry Storch (remember him from F-Troop as Corp. Agarn) did a lot of the voices for this show. The complete series is out on DVD.
The Groovie Goolies finally went into syndication in 1978 and their show became an anthology show called "The Groovie Goolies and Friends". The "friends" were other Filmation shows that were shown on a rotating basis, shows like "M.U.S. H." a cartoon take off on the movie M.A.S.H. starring dogs who were posted at an Artic fort, "Lassie's Rescue Ranger", "The New Adventures of Gilligan", "My Favorite Martian" among others.
The Harlem Globetrotters
The famed basketball team got their own cartoon series on CBS from 1970-72 in this Hanna-Barbera Production. For 22 episodes (some sources say 21) the Trotters, Meadowlark Lemon (Scatman Crothers) Gip (Richard Elkins) Curly (Stu Gilliam), Bobby Joe (Eddie "Rochester" Anderson) and Geese (Johnny Williams) traveled around the world defeating evil in whatever form it took by using their super basketball skills.
This cartoon series goes down in history as being one of the first to have a majority of the characters being African American. It has yet to be released onto DVD.
You might also remember that the Globetrotters went on to make two guest appearances in The New Scooby Doo Movies in 1972 and 73.
In 1979, a 13 episodes series called The Super Globetrotters . aired and has the guys as super heroes, Multi Man, Gismo Man, Sphere Man, Spaghetti Man and Fluid (Liquid) Man and fought villains all over the world.
Help! It's the Hair Bear Bunch!
On CBS in 1971, fans of Hanna Barbera got to watch their latest production, Help! It's the Hair Bear Bunch about the adventures Hair Bear (Daws Butler), Bubi Bear (Paul Winchell) and Square Bear (Bill Callaway) who live in the Wonderland Zoo and spend a great deal of their time attempting to escape. They were helped in their plans by fellow animals in the zoo, such as Furface, the Lion, Slicks the fox, George the Giraffe and an assortment of other zoo animals.Equally determined to thwart their attempts is zoo director Eustace P. Peevly (John Stephenson) and his inept assistant Lionel J. Botch (Joe E. Ross).
Sixteen 30 minute episodes aired, and this series has yet to make it onto DVD.

The Hudson Brothers Razzle Dazzle Show
Bill, Brett and Mark Hudson
THE HUDSON BROTHERS RAZZLE DAZZLE SHOW:The brothers visit Saturday mornings after their successful stint in prime time. They sang, danced, told jokes and were actually pretty good at it. My favorite part was Brett as little kid, Chucky Margolis and Mark as his best friend, Allan. Oh and one can't forget the late Rod Hull with his puppet Emu. Rod passed away in 1999, he never recovered from injuries sustained in a fall. Why the brothers never achieved a bigger level of stardom is sort of a mystery to me. They had a great sound so it wasn't lack of talent. I guess to some extent, maybe folks just didn't take them seriously since they seemed to be just a musical comedy act. Perhaps having one's own TV show was actually more of a negative than a positive?
Anyway, the show is out on DVD so if you missed it the first time around or if you simply want to see it again, it's available.

Josie and the Pussycats
JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS, created by Ruby-Spears, was what many consider to be just a Scooby Doo knockoff with a twist... they were teenagers who solved crimes, but also had a band.Cheryl Ladd who would go on to star in "Charlie's Angels" did the singing voice for the drummer, Melody. It was one of Cheryl's first professional jobs in Hollywood. The complete series is available on DVD.
The Kids From C.A.P.E.R.
Civilian Authority for the Protection of Everybody, Regardless
THE KIDS FROM C.A.P.E.R. Was a live action 70's Saturday morning show. C.A.P.E.R. stood for "Civilian Authority for the Protection of Everybody, Regardless". This team of four guys operated as an undercover unit for the town of Northeast South Weston..honest, I am not making this up! :)Steve Bonino was P.T., who was the leader of the group and who had a passion for gadgets and a strong sense of smell. Visit Steve Bonino's official site.
Cosie Costa was "Bugs" who had super strength and speed and would fill with rage every time the word "bananas" was uttered, which happened usually when he was trying to catch a bad guy. I don't remember if it was ever explained why that word set him off, does anyone remember...did they even give a reason? I guess it might not have been on the air long enough for the writers to have gotten that far into explaining things. :) .
Super cute Biff Warren was "Doomsday", he was a gentle and sweet soul who had the ability to talk to animals. Sadly, Biff passed away, at age 38 back in 1993.
John Lansing was "Doc", the handsome, suave, smart hunk of the foursome who made girls swoon. I thought John was cute back then, but now looking things over, I think Biff was the real sweetie. Funny how a person's tastes can change over the years, huh? Anyway, John is still active in the entertainment business doing lots of behind the scenes work like directing and producing with a lot of work on the popular series, "Walker, Texas Ranger" and most recently, ABC's "Scoundrels".
The show lasted for only 13 episodes, inspired an album (which didn't include the catchy theme song) and has never been released onto DVD as far as I know, but it would be great if that could happen!
The Krofft Supershow
Dr. Shrinker, Electra Woman and Dyna Girl, Bigfoot and Wildboy and More!
THE KROFFT SUPERSHOW was a weekly anthology show that began it's run on September 11, 1976 on ABC. This Sid and Marty Krofft creation had several live action segments and was hosted by rock band Kaptain Kool (Michael Lembeck) and his Kongs; Superchick (Debra Clinger), Turkey (Mickey McMeel), Nashville (Louis DuArt) and Flatbush (Bert Sommer who appeared only on the show's first season),.The first season's segments were:
Dr. Shrinker: Character actor Jay Robinson assumed the role of Dr. Shrinker, a "mad man with an evil mind". Working at his deserted island lair, the Dr had invented a shrinking ray, which he tested on Brad Fulton (Ted Eccles), B.J. Masterson (Susan Lawrence) and her brother Gordie Masterson (Jeff MacKay), three teenagers who had the misfortune of crashing their plane onto his island. Each week, Shrinker tried to capture his little escaped experiments while they tried to reverse the effects of his shrinking ray. Dr. Shrinker lasted only one season and I don't recall if there was ever a resolution offered or not. Anyone remember if these three teens managed to get big again?
Electra Woman and Dyna Girl When villains like the Empress of Evil, Ali Baba, The Pharaoh, came to town and started making trouble, you didn't call the cops, you called, Electra Woman and Dyna Girl. This was a fun segment on the Super Show. Diedre Hall (who would go onto fame on daytime TV as Marlena Evans on Days of Our Lives") was Lori and her friend Judy (Judy Stangis) was Dyna Girl. Aided by gadgets made by inventor and friend, Frank Heflin (Norman Alden) the super duo always managed to save the day. There were 16 episodes (8 two part segements) of this show and it has never been released onto DVD. However, on the 2010 release of the "Sid & Marty Krofft's Saturday Morning Hits", DVD, you can find one episode of Electra Woman and Dyna Girl. While this isn't as satisfying as having the entire show on DVD, it's at least a little bit of something, eh?
Wonder Bug "When you hear the horn, help is on its way" and it comes in the form of Wonder Bug, the third and final live action segment on the Super Show for the first season. Wonder Bug was a snazzy little dune buggy that is really the alter ego of Schlepcar, a broken down, beat up little old dune buggy found at a junk yard by three teenagers, Barry Buntrock (David Levy), C.C. McNamara (John-Anthony Bailey) and Susan Talbot (Carol Anne Seflinger). By placing a magic horn onto the car, it could transform into the wonderful Wonder Bug.
The Second Season
Replacing the now defunct Dr. Shrinker and Electra Woman and Dyna Girl were:
Bigfoot and Wildboy Wildboy (Joseph Butcher) was a orphaned at a young age and taken in and raised by Bigfoot (Ray Young). The duo were protectors of the forest and each week they had to fight some bad guy who had the intention of doing what he shouldn't be doing. The segments were about 15 minutes long and became popular enough for the show to become a 30 minute stand alone series 1979.
Magic Mongo One day, teenagers, Donald (Paul Hinckley), Lorraine (Helaine Lembeck) and Kristy (Robin Dearden) find a bottle and discover that it's the home of genie Mongo (Lennie Weinrib). Each week the three friends would find themselves involved in some sort of adventure that was usually made that much more interesting by the botched attempts at magic done by Mongo.
The Third Season
The third season of the series saw some major changes. It was now being seen on NBC, the name was changed to the Krofft Superstar Hour with the Bay City Rollers (some sources say it was simply called "The Krofft Superstar Hour"). Gone, of course was Kaptain Kool and the Kongs. The show also had two new live segments that I simply don't recall anything about, the first was Horror Hotel with Witchiepoo (that's right, Pufnstuf's Witchiepoo) running a hotel and "The Lost Island". Anyway, the show limped along and in one final attempt to boost ratings another name change occurred to "The Bay City Rollers Show" before finally being cancelled.
Charles Nelson Reilly in Lidsville
Land of Living Hats
LIDSVILLE: Charles Nelson Reilly as Hoodoo, the evil magician who runs Lidsville, the Land of Hats. The show starred Butch Patrick (remember his as Eddie Munster) as Mark, a young boy who gets a bit too nosy while watching "Merlo The Magician" (played also by Riley) perform at a local amusement park. After the show, Mark, decides to sneak into Merlo's dressing room and have a closer look at his magic hat which turns out to be a mistake. As soon as Mark picks up the hat, it begins to grown in size until he is able to crawl onto the brim and next thing you know, it shakes and he goes falling into Lidsville where he is befriended by the talking hats. With the help of Weenie the Genie, who was at one time a prisoner of Hoodoo's, Mark and his friends try to come up with a way to get him back home. There are 17 episodes and the show is a Sid and Marty Krofft creation. It ran on ABC TV during the 1971-72 TV season and Mark never did make it back home before the series ended. :( Sadly, Charles died in 2007 of complications from pneumonia. The complete series was released on DVD in 2005. Lassie's Rescue Rangers
LASSIE'S RESCUE RANGERS The Forest Force, a rescue team headed by Lassie and her human friend's the Turner Family is the focus of this 1973 cartoon. Fifteen episodes of this show aired on ABC from November 11, 1972 to December 22, 1973.Voice Talents

Teen Idol Rick Springfield in Mission: Magic!
MISSION MAGIC It's hard to believe but Rick Springfield played a cartoon version of himself in a 1973 cartoon called Mission:Magic. Rick was an up and coming singer here in the US in the early 70's and as a way to add to his teen idol status, it was decided that he would star in a cartoon in which he would sing and solve mysteries. Along for the fun were the Adventurers Club, a group of high school students, Vinnie, Carol, Franklin, Kim and Harvey who were led by their witchy teacher, Miss Tickle. Each week, Rick would contact the kids on a gramophone in their classroom and Miss Tickle, with help from her magic cat, Tut Tut, would draw a door on the chalkboard in her classroom and off into Rick's world they would go. The stories were fun and the music was great as we got to hear Rick sing a song each week that usually tied in with the moral of the cartoon. Oh, and Rick still had his wonderful Australian accent in this cartoon series.Sadly, the series lasted only one season and Rick seemed to all but vanish from the music scene. He did keep busy as an actor making appearances on popular 70's TV series. Then of course, he hit it big in 1981 with his Number One hit Jessie's Girl and he hasn't looked back.
Just for the fun of it, I made a Mission Magic episode guide that you can check out by clicking on the photo in the right hand corner of this blurb.
Songs From Mission:Magic!
New Adventures of Flash Gordon
In 1979 Filmation brought to NBC this 16-episode cartoon that followed closely the story line of the original Flash Gordon serial from 1936.In this cartoon, Flash was joined by Dale Arden, and Dr. Zarkov as the trio spent their time on planet Mongo battling against Ming the Merciless who was now joined by his daughter Aura, who was just as nasty as her father.
The complete series was released onto DVD in 2006.
Joanna Cameron in the Secrets of Isis
One of the first female super heroes of the 1970's
THE SECRET OF ISIS: Andrea Thomas (Joanna Cameron) was a high school science teacher who, while on an archeological dig in Egypt, found an amulet that belonged to an ancient queen named Hatshepsut. The amulet granted the wearer the powers of the goddess Isis and in the opening narration of the show we heard in a voice over..."With this amulet you and your descendants are endowed by the goddess Isis with the powers of the animals and the elements. You will soar as the falcon soars, run with the speed of gazelles and command the elements of sky and earth".This female super hero was created as a counter part to the series Shazam. Even though Mary Marvel exists, Filmation, the studio that produced both Shazam and Isis, decided to create Isis, a female equivalent of Shazam so they could own the rights to the show and the character. There are 22 episodes that span 2 seasons from 1975-77. Isis and Shazam did crossover appearances on each others shows occasionally. I often wonder why her friend Rick Mason (Brian Cutler) and her students Cindy Lee (Joanna Pang) and Rennie Carol (Ronalda Douglas) could never see the obvious resemblance in features and voice of Ms. Thomas to that of Isis, but oh well, this was a fantasy show and it certainly didn't hurt to believe they we two different people.
This show is out on DVD and it is fun to sit back and watch the old episodes. When I got my DVD's and watched, it was the first time I had seen these shows since they aired originally. I could actually remember some of the plot lines and even some of the dialog, too. The DVD does a great job of bringing this classic series back for new generations to discover and the old generation to visit again, but there is some missing material; at the end of each show, there was a closing comment of sorts by Isis, a "moral of the story" kind of thing. The DVD has some extras included and they did manage to retrieve about 13 of those comments. It would have been great if the DVD was the complete show with those morals included. In some ways, I am a purist I guess, in that I would love to have the shows presented onto DVD the way they were shown on TV when I watched so long ago, but hey...I am really happy with what they have made available. Now if we can get them to release SHAZAM onto DVD, things will just keep getting better and better!

Shazam!
(S)olomon (H)ercules (A)tlas (Z)eus (A)chilles (M)ercury Spells SHAZAM!
SHAZAM: This half hour live action show gave us a total of 27 episodes that spanned 3 seasons from 1974 to 77. Billy Batson (Michael Gray) and his guardian just known as Mentor (Les Tremayne who passed away in 2003) traveled the countryside and found themselves mixed up in all kinds of interesting adventures. When someone would find themselves in a situation that required rescuing, Billy Batson would utter the word "Shazam" and would transform into Captain Marvel. Jackson Bostwick played Captain Marvel in the first season (17 episodes) the role was then assumed by actor John Davey who wore the cape for 11 episodes. This show is yet to be released on DVD, but we can keep hoping that it will be soon! Oh, and Shazam is gotten by taking the first letter of the following names "Solomon", "Hercules", "Atlas", "Zeus", "Achilles" and "Mercury", these are the elders who empower Billy to become Captain Marvel.

Who was the best Captain Marvel?

Folks often wonder why Shazam switched actors from Jackson to John. The story goes that producers thought that Jackson was holding out for more money when he didn't show up for work one day, so he was promptly fired. Turns out, he was seeking medical treatment for injuries he sustained while filming the previous day. When this was proven true, Filmation still chose to replace Jackson, but he did bring legal action again the production company and they still had to pay him for the remainder of his contract.
Jackson is in the process of writing a book about his career and it will cover his Shazam days, too.
This is just a for the fun of it poll and is not meant to be a negative dig at either Jackson or John. We love these guys!!!
The Super Friends!
The original 1973 cartoon series!
THE SUPER FRIENDS Beginning on September 8, 1973, we were treated to one of the first incarnations of "The Super Friends". Hannah-Barbara gave us 16 fun filled episodes of the exploits of Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman and Robin, and Aquaman. Of course, we can' t forget super heroes in training, Wendy, Marvin and Wonder Dog and no, none of them had any special abilities and as I recall Marvin was a little bit of a klutz or maybe it was just teenage inexperience. Sadly, the show was cancelled after one season, but did eventually come back around under a variety of different names, such as "The All New Super Friends Hour", "The Challenge of the Super Friends", "The Worlds Greatest Super Friends" and I think a few others too and of course new characters were added as well. Wendy, Marvin and Wonderdog VS The Wonder Twins

Rima, the Jungle Girl

Remember when Rima, the Jungle Girl made a few appearances on the All New Super Friends Hour . She appeared in the episodes Fire, River of Doom both in 1977 and in Return of Atlantis in 1980. Her character was really just a minor addition, but she was fun to watch when she did make an appearance.
Valley of the Dinosaurs
The Butler Family lost in a prehistoric world!
VALLEY OF THE DINOSAURS: allowed us to follow the adventures of the Butler family, husband John, his wife Kim and their two kids Katie and Greg along with their dog, Digger. While out rafting on the Amazon River, they were pulled down into a whirl pool which acted as a door way to prehistoric times. They were befriended by caveman Gorak and his wife, Gera and their son Lock and daughter Tana. The series premiered on CBS September 7, 1974 and lasted until September 4, 1976 with a total of sixteen half hour episodes.

Charles Nelson Reilly as Uncle Croc in Uncle Croc's Block
He's the only alligator who can talk!
UNCLE CROC'S BLOCK Just imagine Charles Nelson Reilly (that's right, Hoodoo from Lidsville) dressed in a crocodile suit, hosting a kids show under the name of Uncle Croc, and bantering with his side kick, another guy dressed up in a rabbit suit and aptly named, Mr. Rabbit Ears. You say you can't imagine it, well, relax, you don't have to, because it actually happened. That's right, in 1975, on ABC, we got to see that exact premise and it was, by most counts, terrible. Mixed in among the "wild antics" of Uncle Croc were cartoon segments with titles like, "M.U.S.H." (Mangy Unwanted Shabby Heroes) a cartoon take off on M.A.S.H, "Fraidy Cat" about a cat haunted by the ghost of his eight selves, and "Wacky and Packy" about two guys from the Stone Age who somehow got transported to our modern day and had to figure out how to fit in.When the show began it was an hour long, but by mid season it was retooled to 30 minutes with Wacky and Packy being the only cartoon segment. It limped along for a few more episodes and finally was simply pulled from the air waves, never again to see the light of day. However, the "Wacky and Packy" cartoons as well as "Fraidy Cat" have shown up on DVD releases in recent years. I think that "M.U.S.H." may have been released on VHS tape some years ago, but I am not sure about any DVD release of those cartoon episodes.
Co starred Jonathan Harris as Croc's producer Mr. Bitterbottom and Alfie Wise as Mr. Rabbit Ears.
Wheelie and the Chopper Bunch
WHEELIE AND THE CHOPPER BUNCH In September of 1974, we were introduced to Wheelie, a cute souped up red Volkswagen who made his living as a stunt car.Wheelie was in love with cute little yellow bug, Rota Ree, who unfortunately, had also caught the eye of Chopper, leader of the Chopper Bunch.
Hannah-Barbera produced 13 episodes of this cartoon which were enough episodes to keep it on the air for a season.
