Horror Movies Of The 1970's

Ranked #21,710 in Entertainment, #263,285 overall

The End Of The Beginning

The 1970's was a strange time, England who had held the crown when it came to horror fell by the wayside while in Italy their definition of horror became what everyone wanted. Meanwhile in the United States having offered fairly average horror offerings for years a series of movies including The Exorcist and Last House On The Left saw horror taking a brand new path, psychological horror made way for something more visceral.

The 1970's were arguably the best time for horror movies, with movies winning massive movie awards and audiences flocking to cinemas worldwide desperately in search of the next biggest shock.

The Abominable Dr. Phibes

Few horror movies have great comedy elements to them, Dr. Phibes was such a loved character in the movie that a year later he returned to the scream in Dr. Phibes Rises Again.

A lover of music Dr. Phibes who talks through a strange vocal device plays with a strange band of mechanical musicians, in between killing people of course.

Dr. Phibes sought revenge on the doctors who failed to keep his wife alive when she went into labour.

Phibes methods of killing are possibly some of the most amusing in history next to Theatre Of Blood's (see further down). There is a great moment in which one of Phibes victims becomes impaled by a unicorns head, try to watch this movie without laughing if you can

Theatre Of Blood

I loved Theatre Of Blood, it was a delicious blend of comedy and horror with a magnificent cast of British actors including Diana Rigg, Diana Doors, Arthur Lowe, and Ian Hendry.

Vincent Price leads the way as Edward Lionheart, a Shakespearian actor who is snubbed at the actors guild awards by a group of judge reviewers all of whom found his performances abysmal.

With a beautiful soundtrack, Theatre Of Blood is a timeless classic as good to watch now, as it was back in 1973.

Carrie

Carrie

During the 1970's Stephen King became a popular author telling incredibly twisted horror tales. It was inevitable that his books would make the jump to the cinema and in 1976 Carrie appeared.

Carrie after having her first period develops the power of telekinesis, having for years been the subject of abuse due to her warped mothers views of religion; one day Carrie finally snaps and vows revenge on those that cross her.

The stars of the movie all short to stardom Sissy Spacek, John Travolta, Nancy Allen, Amy Irving, and Piper Laurie.

Directed by Brian DePalma many years on Carrie isstill considered Stephen Kings best movie offering.

Rabid

Rabid

During the 1970's there was a new name on the block in the world of horror, that name was David Cronenberg. Canadian Cronenberg delivered stark shocking movies to an unsuspecting audience, both Shivers and Rabid being the best of his offerings.

Porn star Marilyn Chambers leads the way in Rabid as a biker who has a terrible reaction after surgery performed in the wake of a car accident.

Cronenberg took the traditional Zombie movie and gave it a new twist, delivering scares that the public were not familiar with. While the acting was awful his movies provided chills long after the movies had finished. It was Cronenberg's unique vision that still keeps him a popular director to this day.
