Great Wolf Lodge Grapevine Review | Review of the Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine

The Great Wolf Lodge is a family resort that boasts the largest indoor waterpark in Texas. Inside the lodge you'll find an exciting fantasy lodge themed hotel that is super clean and tidy. The lodge has enough eating options inside that you'll never have to leave the resort unless you really want to.

Sound like a dream vacation for your family? Well, not quite.

We took our family there in August of 2008 and were disappointed with what we got for our money. Here you will find an honest review of the Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine. I'm a mom of two and on this page I share my real life experience with the Lodge.

Check In

First Impression

I was so excited when we first pulled into the Great Wolf Lodge. The building just looks like it's going to be a lot of fun. The entrance is flanked by two gigantic wolf statues, and very loud music plays welcoming you to the lodge.

When you walk in, you are shocked by the lobby's soaring ceilings and the amount of fun kid friendly lodge decor that surrounds you. The wall along side the check in desk is glass and overlooks the indoor water park. The entire scene makes you ready to get your room, get suited up, and start playing.

So, with extreme anticipation, we got in line to check in. Before we got to the front of the line...the 1 hour plus line...my two little ones were screaming and crying. The entire scene is torturous to young children. They can see the water park, but cannot yet enjoy it. After waiting in line for an hour and a half, we were told that our room wasn't ready (we were there after the check in time). The clerk at the desk took our cell phone number, told us to enjoy the city of Grapevine, and they'd call us when I room was available.

We went and ate at a nearby restaurant a bit. Still no call. So we waited, after all the restaurant was air conditioned. Two hours later, still no call. My husband called the lodge and they said our room still wasn't ready. We explored the Grapevine Mills Mall a bit, still no call. My little ones were getting super cranky. They needed a nap, but we still didn't have a room. My husband decided to go back to the lodge. He had a small fit and someone suddenly produced a room key to our room which was supposedly still supposed to be unavailable.

It was 4:30 in the evening and we were finally in our room!

About the Indoor Waterpark

So much for not needing sunscreen!

The waterpark was disappointing. The commercials and website led me to believe that the waterpark had a splash zone and other areas that would be good for my 24 month old. Unfortunately, it turns out that the Great Wolf Lodge Waterpark is really no place for a toddler. Kids ages 5 and up would probably have a great time at their waterpark.

The website mentions that they have an outdoor waterpark area. If you are like me and were hoping to keep your little ones out of the hot Texas sun for most of the day in the inside waterpark and thought the outdoor one might be a nice break now and then, then you too would be sorely disappointed. The outdoor waterpark is actually a lot nicer than the indoor one. We ended up having to douse our little ones with sunscreen over and over because none of us wanted to hangout in the indoor park.

The website also claims that the indoor park is a nice and balmy 85 degrees. Well, we went the first week of August and it was more like 70 degrees, and the water was even colder than that! The water was so cold that our 24 month old's lips turned blue and her whole body started shaking.

So, as far as the "indoor" waterpark idea goes, it was worthless. And if you are going to douse yourself with sunscreen and stay outside any way, you might as well go to Six Flag's Hurricane Harbor that's just right down the road and much, much nicer with a ton of things to do.

The Food

Even the "fresh" food was frozen.

The one nice thing I can say about Great Wolf is that you really don't have to leave the hotel unless you want to. They have various restaurants and snack shacks to choose from. They even have a Pizza Hut.

I was pleasantly surprised by the snack shack at the outdoor waterpark when I saw things on the menu like: club sandwich, chef salad, and a chicken wrap along side kid friendly items like hamburgers, french fries, and chicken nuggets. So, I got a chef salad. And, it was frozen! I don't mean it had been frozen and they served it to be thawed...I mean it was frozen when I got it. The boiled egg, lunch meat, cheese, and yes even the lettuce all had ice on them. In the heat, part of it thawed quickly and then the lettuce was all limp and soggy. Oh, and did I mention it was around $8.00, not including a drink!

My family all went down to the sit down restaurant to eat one night while I stayed in the room with the baby. My husband gave me a menu and asked me what I wanted and he'd bring it up. Since his sister was treating us to this meal I thought I'd order just a salad to save her some money. I ordered a salad that had grilled chicken, strawberries and a blackberry vinaigrette. Well, so much for saving money. My little salad was $14.95! They had a buffet that was $20 a person!

The Cost

The prices are outrageous!

Ok, so how much does the glorious Great Wolf Lodge cost?

Just the plain Jane family suite (not even one of the neat themed rooms) is $189 a night and that is during the off season time (during the school year) and on a week day! The same room is $229 a night on the weekend during the off season months! The neat themed rooms run anywhere from $329 to $429 a night. And keep in mind that this doesn't include the food, which is outrageously high if you eat at Great Wolf.

We stayed in a family suite, had 4 adults and 3 kids (mind you, all the kids were free because they were all 3 and under) and after we paid for food, our little 2 night trip was well over $1,500! And that doesn't even include the gas we spent to drive up there!

We could have flown somewhere neat and stayed a few nights for that price, or gone to Sea World.

My Final Thoughts on Great Wolf Lodge Grapevine, Texas

A summary of my experience at Grapevine's Great Wolf Lodge

We were very disappointed with Great Wolf Lodge. It was just way too expensive and wasn't as age appropriate for toddlers as I had expected. Since it's better for school age kids any way, you'd be much better off going to Hurricane Harbor and staying at a nice hotel.

You could stay 2 nights at a nice hotel, go to Hurricane Harbor one day and Six Flags the next and still not spend as much as you would at Great Wolf Lodge.

I stayed at the Lodge and agree with you. It was a little disappointing.

the wolf says:

it was jam packed. and it took for ever to get through.

girlfriendfactory says:

I haven't stayed here, but my mom lives in Flower Mound and we often drive past it on the way to shop in Southlake and the outside of the place off of hwy 26 makes it look like the ugliest hotel ever. We laugh and comment every time we drive by. Funny that they built it directly across from the Gaylord Texan, too. The Gaylord doesn't have an indoor/outdoor water park, but we go every year for Christmas brunch and it is absolutely FABULOUS, even for the high price, and the decor is spectacular, plus the entire setting (including the grounds) are festive and serene. Try it next time!

james says:

terrible hotel and waterpark, outrageously expensive for what you get.

naiya says:

i say that the great wolf lodge is the best hotel i have ever
seen.and i will injoy my stay at it on may 9th 2009 saturday

I stayed at the Lodge and disagree. I thought it was great.

lemonsqueezy says:

I loved it. However, I totally agree about the outrageous food prices! OUTRAGEOUS! I will have to think of another option for food the next time we go.

djnjsb says:

ive been it was a little crouded but it was awesome besides that!

Heather says:

Been 2 times and plan on going again! Son's favorite staycation in DFW area and less expensive since no air travel or rental car. Expect prices like at any other resort. Need a day for MagiQuest alone - great fun. Fun decor, clean resort. We take a cooler full of food for lunches and eat a meal or two at their restaurant - buffet is good. More fun during winter months and is warmer inside than during the summertime (you don't want to be too warm in summer). Outside is a lot of fun though. Try to go during off season (jan-mar) to avoid crowds. Chlorine fumes are worse during the summer months - been during both seasons and winter is best. I personally wouldn't take toddlers unless you also are taking older children too, even though there is a nice toddler area. It's just not very big compared to some place like Disney World. Would recommend for 5 years and up. I didn't take my son anywhere until he could swim well - just wasn't worth the money to me. It is nice to have a room right there for little ones to take a break in, though.

Heather says:

My family and I have been 2 times and plan on going again. It is my son's favorite place in the DFW area - better than 6 Flags & Hurricane Harbor! The rooms are fun, the entire place is clean and the kids have a blast. They love Magic Quest so much, you almost NEED 2 days stay to fit in all the fun. It's a great staycation option for us because we save on not flying somewhere, and possibly renting a car. We bring our own food in a large cooler and eat once or twice at the restaurants which adds to the whole experience. I would skip the snack bars. If I'm going to spend a lot of money on food I want more than burgers & basic salads. I don't think they allow you to bring your own food into the pool area, though. So there is a bit of inconvenience of going back to the room to eat but is better than having to leave the resort. I always try to go off season at any resort (including Disney World) to avoid the crowds. All in all, best resort we've been to and worth the cost!

Melissa says:

I love GWL! It is a wonderful family vacation choice. I think that one thing you have to keep in mind is it is a vacation resort and much like any other "hot" vacation destination it is expensive - no worse than Disney World, Sea World, or Six Flags when it comes to food prices. The website specifically says you may start enjoying the resort as of 1pm, but generally rooms are not ready until at least 4pm. Just pack a small bag with your swim gear and start enjoying the water park. The inside park was a bit crowded, but no worse than any other water park I have ever been to. You will get the smell of chlorine, but it's inside and enclosed and no where for the majority of fumes to go, but the smell is not that bad. MagiQuest is a BLAST and we all enjoyed it. We have played before in Pigeon Forge, TN and we were excited to do the adventures at this location! By no means is this a cheap vacation unless you can go in an off peak time and during the week, but it is definietly a place to have some kid friendly and family fun! We will go back many times in the future!!!

xtnshun says:

We have stayed at the Williamsburg one and loved it. I agree it was expensive, but we didn't have problems with lines or the food. If we had stayed at a regular hotel we probably would have gone to Busch Gardens which would have added to the cost.

Madlyn says:

We LOVED Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine Texas! My children are 8 and 13 and we had a blast. We checked in around 2pm on the Thursday BEFORE Memorial Day, there was no line, our room was ready, we brought our own food, but had the breakfast buffet Friday morning which was delicious. We visited both the indoor park and outdoor. Although the sun was out and HOT, we were happy to be able to leave out of the muggy indoor park where the chlorine smell stung our eyes for awhile. We checked out of our room Friday morning at 11am, but stayed at the waterpark until it closed at 9 that night and then went to a cheaper ($60) hotel to shower and sleep. I have no complaints. It was well worth the money.

jasmine says:

it is f-u-n

Janelle says:

The great wolf logdge was a blast and it was worth the money. I stayed in the great wolf lodge in WA though so I dont know how much different it is. We dont have an outdoor park, only one hottub is outside. Well my opinion is that the great wolf lodge is a fun place to visit.

missy says:

we have 4 kids intotal two 10-13 and the other two under two , it is awesome when the little ones get tired you have the convienence of your room and the best part no sun tan lotion if you stay indoors. tx mom

Brenda says:

We have two girls, 2 1/2 and 4 1/2. We stayed one night, took our own food (being forewarned about high prices) and loved it! We were only inside, which was fine with us. We played for over 4 hours both days. We hope to return soon with our adult sons, their wives, and our granddaughter.

Michelle says:

We went this weekend. My 19 month old had a great time. We will go back. It wasn't crowded and my whole family walked away with a lot of great memories.

Summer says:

i loved great wolf lodge and so did my family the prices are all worth it.

Great Wolf Lodge is gear for kids, they love it.

Judging from what your experience at the Great Wolf Lodge was I think that I will find other areas of the country to visit. Sounds like the lodge's kid friendly atmosphere is based more on monetary gain then on the guest's enjoyment of the facilities. Hope your next vacation is better.

We just got back and I am getting ready to write my own review -- both the good and the bad. All in all, I had a blast and I can't wait to go back. We were in Virginia though. I am sorry you had such a bad experience. I agree that the wait to check in is AWFUL and still NOT be able to use the park when your kids are standing there staring at it -- miserable!

You have to use some common sense with any type of travel. I saw on the website check in is 4pm. You can enjoy waterpark at 1pm but room may not be ready before 4pm. We have been 3 times and room was always ready earlier. Hotel food is always more expensive and not super impressive. This last trip was with my Girl Scout troop I ordered pizza to be delivered to the hotel $53 feed 10 girls and 2 adults, next morning I bought donuts at Kountry Donuts and took them for lunch at Steak N Shake (kids eat free on weekends). As with any vacation or getaway you have to plan and research a little. We had swimsuits on and ready to go in case our rooms weren't ready, same as when we travel any where.

I have never been there but have seen it advertised many times and have always wanted to check it out. Thanks for the info. it definitely gives me something to think about before we ever go.

We have one of these near our home in Charlotte NC. I always wondered if it was a good deal. Sounds like maybe! Thanks for such an honest review.

My final thought on GWL is that it's worth it if you live in a colder climate or here in Texas if it's winter and you want to go swimming, but in warmer climates you're better off going to a traditional water park. GWL is a disappointment in the summer time here compared to the amazing water parks we have available.

I've never been to a Great Wolf Lodge, but I just watched the episode of Undercover Boss with the CEO of Great Wolf Resorts. I think they were even at the one in Grapevine TX.
