The A-Team!
In 1972, a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit.
The A-Team is an American action adventure television series about a fictional group of ex-United States Army Special Forces who are on the run from the military while working as soldiers of fortune. Despite being thought of as mercenaries, the A-Team almost always acted on the side of the good guys, helping the oppressed. The show ran for five seasons on the NBC television network, from January 23, 1983, to December 30, 1986 (with one additional, previously unbroadcast episode popping up on March 8, 1987), with a total of 98 episodes. It has achieved cult status through heavy US syndication and enjoyed a brief revival in the 1990s when re-runs were shown in the United Kingdom. As of 2006 the show is in syndication on Sleuth & TV Land. Also currently each season is shown in progression in a recurring cycle on the UK satellite channel UKTV Gold, with an episode shown daily. 80s Trends
In the early 1980s, the first generation of computer graphics in arcade games produce the popular Space Invaders arcade game (technically, Space Invaders came out in 1978), followed by Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, and Frogger. Towards the end of the decade, home video game consoles begin to outstrip the arcade game. The Rubik's cube, Cabbage Patch Kids, "Baby on Board" signs, and Trivial Pursuit fads capture the interest of the American and British public.
Due to the rising influence of computers, nerds experience an increase in status. Popular movies such as Revenge of the Nerds boost the image of computer nerds.
The Karate Kid becomes a blockbuster hit. Ninja and martial arts mania sweeps North America due to the popularity of Kung Fu Theater and Ninja Movies. The cartoon characters Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles become very popular and widely mass-marketed. The emergence of self-styled martial arts experts gives rise to the so-called McDojo and Bullshido trends.
Aerobics are huge. The fad reaches across exercise videos, fashion, and music trends as seen in Olivia Newton John's music video (Let's Get) Physical, the 1982 movie Flashdance that inspired legwarmers as a fashion trend and the popular Jane Fonda workout videos.
Rap music begins to break into the mainstream and a string of breakdancing movies appeared Beat Street, Breakin', and Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo; the must-have accessory here was the ghetto blaster or boom box. Breakdance battles showed up as an alernative to gang fights and were popular in music videos, such as Michael Jackon's Beat It.

80s Fashion
1980s fashion in popular culture incorporated distinct trends from different eras, including ancient Egypt, early 20th century English royalty, Victorian era buccaneers, and punk rockers from the 1970s. The fashion look that was most indicative of the decade was the wide use of shoulder pads. Men wore power suits, as a result of the greater tendency for people to display their wealth. Brand names became increasingly important in this decade, making Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein household names. In the United States, Madonna was titled the "Material Girl" and many teenage girls looked to her for fashion statements. The popular movie Flashdance (1983) made ripped sweatshirts well-known in the general public. The television shows Dallas and Dynasty also had a similar impact. 80s Fashion books on Amazon
Fashion trends through the 80s
- For men, the early 1980s can be described as post-hippie, post-disco and early glam, with an obvious influence of David Bowie androgyny emerging. Beards started to disappear and tans, open collars and jewelry started to emerge as popular fashion. The up-turned collar became a signature of cool.
1980s punk fashion can be traced to the ripped jeans, torn t-shirts, scrappy haircuts and worn and torn leather jackets sported by members of the Sex Pistols. The Sex Pistols were dressed by Malcolm McLaren, their manager, who owned a clothes store called 'Let It Rock' in the Kings Road, Chelsea area of London, when they released Anarchy in the UK in 1976. - Pastel colors dominated fashions of the early 1980s. This shifted to more somber and muted tones in the Mid 1980s. The trend toward moody shades remained dominant for the rest of the decade, with notable exceptions. In 1987 day-glo colors became popular for beach and party wear. The mid-1980s also saw revivals of Hawaiian shirts and tie dyed shirts. Unlike the original 1960s tie dyes, 1980s fashions were usually printed fabrics designed to resemble the tie dye process, rather than homemade tie dying. Opulent shades such as royal blue became fashionable late in the decade.
- Acid-washed jeans and jean jackets had become very strong with both sexesin the Late 1980s. Acid washing is the process of chemically bleaching the denim so it would break down the fiber of material, forcing the dye to fade and thus leaving undertones of the original dye which would leave pale white streaks or spots on the material. This became associated with the heavy metal trend (called "hair metal" in later decades for the large frizzy coiffures worn by both male and female enthusiasts). Big and eccentric hair styles were popularized by film and music stars in particular amongst teenagers. The mullet existed in several different styles, all characterized by hair short on the sides and long in the back. Mullets were popular in suburban and rural areas among working class men. This contrasted with a conservative look favored by business professionals, with neatly groomed short hair for men and sleekly straight hair for women. Women's hairstyles became increasingly long in the latter part of the decade and blunt cuts dominated.

- Excellent 80s page! It is so funny how many different, well everything, there were in the 80s. I loved reading this lens from a guys' perspective of the 80s! So many "fads." Good times, fun times, good memories! My 80s lens is mostly the girl "fads" etc...and things I remember about the 80s.
