Watching 80s Fantasy Movies

My husband and I went on a kick of collecting and watching some 80s fantasy movies! Our favorite is The Princess Bride which we had both seen many times.

There were a couple I hadn't watched like Legend and Dragonslayer. He'd already seen them, but watched them again with me. I was impressed that the movies looked really good for being from the 80s!

Dragonslayer - 1981

Dragonslayer

Amazon Price: $6.99 (as of 10/12/2008)

I read about a movie called Dragonslayer online and asked my husband about it. He said we should get it and that I'd like it. So we picked it up at the local Borders for around $10.

How could I have missed this movie in the 80s? Probably because I was not yet in kindergarten when it came out and it shows someone being dragon food in a pretty graphic way. I had to close my eyes.

That being said, it was an interesting movie with a nice medieval feel to it and I was impressed that it was from 1981. I thought the wizard was awesome because you could see he had powers and had a funny hat--I thought this is going to be cool! However, something happens to the wizard and his somewhat incompetent apprentice is the one who goes on the quest to kill the dragon. Why would they want to kill the dragon? Oh, only because some people came by and begged the wizard as they have to sacrifice virgins to the dragon every so often or it will fly around burning villages and people up. Dragons in this movie are not at all nice and cuddly!

The Last Unicorn - 1982 (animated)

The Last Unicorn

Amazon Price: $9.49 (as of 10/12/2008)

I saw The Last Unicorn on sale at Target so picked it up and it started our 80s fantasy movie kick!

Unicorns are being captured and there ends up being just one free unicorn left. This last unicorn ventures out to find the other unicorns and gets caught by an ugly witch. Lucky for the unicorn, the witch has a wizard helper that helps the unicorn escape, then the unicorn and wizard go on a quest to find the other unicorns.

I found it amusing that the unicorn was so full of herself. The movie is worth watching just for that. I don't want to spoil the ending if you haven't seen it but all the other unicorns are dumb! Perhaps you'll know what I mean if you've seen it. :)

Legend - 1985

Legend (Ultimate Edition)

Amazon Price: $14.98 (as of 10/12/2008)

We bought Legend at Borders while looking for Dragonslayer and thought we'd pick it up too. We watched the director's cut version which had different music than the one that was in the theater in the 80s. I can't comment on what else is different because I don't know! I thought that the DVD we got would have both versions but it only had the director's cut.

Tom Cruise plays a weird woodsy dude that wants to marry a princess. However, the world is in danger when the evil demon wants to kill the unicorns so there will be darkness forever (he can't come out in the sun.) He sends out some goblins to do his dirty work and they manage to get one unicorn while it is being distracted by the princess. This caused some noticable effects in the world, so Tom Cruise sets out to restore order. Afterall, he's the one who showed the princess where the unicorn was--and the unicorns are sacred so it's a big no-no to go up to the unicorns like the princess did.

80s Fantasy Movie Poster - Legend

The Princess Bride - 1987

The Princess Bride - Dread Pirate Edition

Amazon Price: (as of 10/12/2008)

The Princess Bride is the funniest fantasy movie! My husband and I both claim it as our favorite movie. We had it on VHS and I got The Princess Bride - Dread Pirate Edition for my birthday. They have several versions of The Princess Bride on DVD including a Buttercup edition but I thought the Dread Pirate Edition sounded the coolest.

Buttercup has a farm boy Wesley who she bosses around and all he ever says is "As you wish" which means "I love you." Yay, they're in love. Then, Farm Boy ventures out, and then comes back as The Dread Pirate Roberts.... Buttercup gets captured.... etc. You've seen it, right?
