Top Eight 80s Toys for Girls

Ranked #1,763 in Hobbies, Games & Toys, #19,390 overall

Those were the days!

If you were a girl growing up in the 1980s then you probably remember some of these toys.

You won't find Cabbage Patch dolls or Care Bears on this lens, although those were fun too. These are the forgotten toys that still bring back our fondest memories of life as a child.

Enjoy!

#1 Holly Hobbie

She started out as a little girl on American Greeting Cards, in an oversized, blue chintz bonnet. In 1974, Holly Hobbie became a doll for little girls to play with. Later, she was featured in a novel titled, The Adventures of Holly Hobbie. Today, she has been redesigned as Holly Hobbie and Friends.

#2 Charmkins

Charmkins were tiny dolls that could be attached to certain peices of jewelry and worn as an outfit accessory. I loved their scents and fun names. Best of all, I could pack them up in their jewelry box/doll house and take them with me anywhere.

#3 Rose Petal Place

The movie Rose Petal Place was produced in 1984. From then, a line of dolls ensued. They were kinda a cross between Strawberry Shortcake and Rainbow Brite.

Which Rose Petal character are you?

#4 Poochie

Remember the Poochie commercial? "Poochie! Poochie for girls!" As if we thought that the boys might play with her. Thanks for clearing that up for us Mattel.

Her ears were the perfect color of pink with her very cool sunglasses. She eventually had her own Saturday morning cartoon and still has a large fanbase today.

#5 Sea Wees

Sea Wees were the little mermaid dolls that you played with in the bathtub. They came as a set with a mom, a baby, comb, and a sea shell sponge. The mom's hair was the texture of Barbie hair. After a few sessions in the bathtub you couldn't run a brush through it no matter what. Later versions of the set included a small pet as well.

#6 Fashion Plates

Hasbro's Fashion Plates were the answer for those of us who were aspiring fashion designers. Do you remember when the black drawing utensil ran out and you used your own black crayon as a substitute, which left a fuzzier picture but you didn't care?

#7 Jem

Before there was Hannah Montana, there was Jem. Jerrica Benton was a music executive during the day but the powers of her earrings converted her to a glamorous rock star diva - Jem - at night. We loved to root for Jem and boo her rival band, The Misfits.

If you are ever in the Los Angeles area then you can attend the annual celebration of Jem.

Jem Theme Song

Do you remember the contest where you got together with a friend and called and left a message of both of you singing the Jem theme song? I suppose that the best "group" would be the winner - don't quite remember the prize. Nonetheless, my best friend and I called that number and sang out hearts out! Ha! Here is the theme song for your listening pleasure.

#8 Polly Pocket (The Original)

The original Polly Pocket came in sets with corresponding scene (often some type of house or park). Polly, herself, was a small plastic doll. She got her name because of the small pocket-sized houses that she came with.

Polly has been redesigned. While the new Pollys are fun - they are not near as cool as the ones we remember.

If you could have one toy from your childhood, what would it be?

LemonsqueezyI want my Charmkins back. Do you remember Charmkins? The little house? The scented dolls? I had them all -- maybe not ALL. I loved them.

What childhood toy is memorable for you?

Does anyone remember Holly Hobby? My sisters were into those in a HUGE way when I was a kid.

I had Fashion Plates once upon a time. But what I still have to this day are my paper dolls and a few stuffed animals, including a Baby Baa Baa lamb that, I kid you not, still talks. I was big enough when I got him not to squeeze him all the time. He didn't stop talking then and once in a blue moon as an adult, I give him a squeeze. It's been thirty years. I just went over gave him a squeeze and, yup, he said one of his six phrases.
