When the students start their first day they realize that academics are just as important as performance. This enables Leroy's subplot to get started. Although Leroy is a great dancer he's harbouring a secret - illiteracy.

As the movie progresses we follow the friendships that are formed and the ups and downs of the student's lives.

Drugs, religion, sexuality, jealousy, homosexuality and parental relationships are all explored in the movie Fame, along side some great music and dancing.

It also covers unwanted pregnancy and looks un-nervingly at what some people will do to accomplish their dreams.

The title track Fame is a timeless 80s classic and is joined by another Irene Cara sung song "Out Here On My Own" on the Soundtrack album, Fame.

Even Paul McCrane who found "fame" on the medical drama series ER shows that he can sing with his song "Dogs in the Yard.

This remastered CD of the original album even gives us the touching ballard "Miles From Here which is a beautiful song.

The movie spawned a television series and a musical that ran on London's West End for ten years. It also spawned huge numbers of young fans who suddenly wanted to get into the performing arts. Everywhere you looked people were wearing leg warmers.....................

The television series Fame ran from 1982-1987 and starred Debbie Allen, Albert Hague, Gene Anthony Ray, Lori Singer, Valerie Landsburg, Lee Curreri, Erica Gimpel Carlo Imperato, Carol Mayo Jenkins & P R Paul.

The television series allowed us to look deeper into the character's lives. The individual episode plots also enabled us to look at problems such as a dancer facing MS and how a pianist handles stage fright.

Every week we got to see great drama, listen to good music and watch some dancing. Another great thing was that the dancers could actually dance, Lori Singer was actually an accomplished Cellist and Lee Currrei an actual keyboardist.

This is trully iconic 80s tv, so crack out the leg warmers and dance along with The Kids from Fame......"I'm gonna live forever, baby remember my name - Fame...."

Did They Find Fame?

So what did happen to the Kids from Fame.....let's have a look.

Debbie Allen

Queen of the Legwarmers, Debbie Allen founded her own Dance School called the Debbie Allen Dance Institute.

She has won a number of awards for her choreography and her directing and continues to appear in small roles on screen.

Sweet Charity [1986 Broadway Cast]

In 1986 she headlined in Sweet Charity. This Broadway revival was designed to be a copy of the 1966 version and was actually billed as the 20th Anniversary Production. Bob Fosse was director and choreographer again and Gwen Verdon (the original Charity) acted as an advisor.

Debbie was supported by Bebe Neuwirth and Michael Rupert. Although the original orchestrations were reused they did transform the ballad Where Am I Going which really showed off Debbie's singing abilities.

More recently Debbie Allen has appeared as a judge on the US version of "So You Think You Can Dance."

Debbie Allen also had a role in the 2009 version of the movie Fame, playing the Dean of the School.

Carlo Imperato

I can find little about Carlo's career since Fame.

He did play a part in the 2001 comedy movie Face to Face which was based on a story that Carlo himself, co-wrote.

Lee Curreri

Lee played the part of Bruno who was a keyboard prodigy and who's background very much matched Lee's own. He does not act anymore, but is an extremely accomplished composer, music producer and keyboardist.

Lee Curreri has produced songs for Natalie Cole and Olivia Newton John. He also scored a number of episodes of Chicago Hope (1994) and Dangerous Minds(1996).

He has also released his own cd called Aquabox which according to one reviewer makes you feel good, and has a great techno sound!

Carol Mayo Jenkins

Carol is now a well respected Theatre Instructor at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

Erica Gimpel

Erica actually was a pupil at the New York School of Performing Arts when she was cast in the role of Coco.

Profiler Seasons 1-4 DVD Set

Amazon Price: $100.00 (as of 05/25/2012)Buy Now

One of Erica Gimpel's biggest roles since leaving Fame was as Angel on Profiler. She has also appeared on popular shows like ER, Numbers, Boston Legal, House and Veronica Mars.

Valerie Landsburg

Valerie actually beat Madonna for the role of Doris in Fame, I wonder what would have happened to Madge if she had won the role?

Valerie Landsburg has had small roles in Hotel, Murder She Wrote, Empty Nest, Nip/Tuck and the Unit. Since the 1990s until now she has also been directing, among other things she has directed 7 episodes of The Best Sex Ever.

Albert Hague

Although Albert Hague is well known for his role of Shorofsky in Fame (both the movie and tv series), he was actually a well known composer beforehand.

He wrote scores to Plain and Fancy as well as Redhead, both of which were on Broadway.

Still "Young & Foolish"

Amazon Price: $5.31 (as of 05/25/2012)Buy Now

In 1998 Albert and wife Rennee Orin gave an informal appearance at Cinegrill, LA which is where this was recorded.

They sang together and talked amicably, it was a great performance and a must for any musical theater fans.

Albert Hague passed away on 12 November 2001. One of my favorite quotes of his is "Well I grew up in a tough neighborhood - Nazi Germany" Fans of Fame, as well as musical theater, are really grateful that you survived Nazi Germany Mr Hague, hats off to you.

PR Paul

PR Paul has most recently been seen in the role of Pasche in the television series Falcone (2000).

Lori Singer

Lori Singer was a prodigy and was accepted at Julliard Performing Arts School at 14 years of age. She majored in music and went on to become the school's youngest undergraduate.

At age 17 she decided to take acting lessons and her first acting role was on Fame as Julie Miller.

Footloose (Special Collector's Edition)

Amazon Price: $6.86 (as of 05/25/2012)Buy Now

Lori's break out movie was Footloose (another 80s dance movie) and she beat Madonna to win the role.

Footloose has some great choreography and is basically a tale of teen rebellion.

Ren played by Kevin Bacon is a city kid who is in for a big case of culture shock when his family moves to a small town where dancing and rock music are illegal. Needless to say that has to change!

Lori has starred in other movies and also had a role in the short lived Sci-Fi series VR-5. She still plays the Cello and spends a lot of her time on promoting the "DISHES" project, a charity for pediatric AIDS.

Gene Anthony Ray

After performing in the movie, Fame, Gene was accepted in to the New York School of Performing Arts where Fame was set. He was expelled after one year however, so the role of rebel suited him.

He was one of two actors who worked on the series for the entire six seasons. After it finished though he had trouble finding work.

His drug and alcohol addiction ate up the money he had made from Fame and he died in June 2003, aged only 41. The cause of death was a stroke, although he was also HIV positive.

Legwarmers, anyone?
