The Rubik's Cube - An 80s Fad or a Puzzle for all Time?

What do you think of when you see a Rubik's Cube? When I see or think of the Rubik's Cube I find myself instantly transported back to the 1980s when that horrible plastic cube sucked you in. Hours upon hours were wasted trying to conquer a silly plastic puzzle known as the Rubik's Cube (I could've given it a number of other names as well!!!).

I do love the Rubik's cube though, even if I have never managed to solve it. I have done my bit by passing it along to another generation, now it's your turn to pass on "the power of the cube".

Despite being an icon of the 1980s the Rubik's cube was actually invented in the 1970s. Hungarian Erno Rubik introduced it to the world in 1974 under the name of the Magic Cube. Ideal Toys released it under the name Rubik's Cube in 1980 and so the torment story begins..........

  • In 1980 the Rubik's Cube won the German Game of the Year award.
  • It then started it's domination selling over 100 million between 1980 and 1982 alone.
  • It took out the BATR Toy of the Year in both 1980 and 1981.
  • It was so popular that Ideal Toys published a Rubik's Cube Newsletter from 1982 until 1983

It didn't take long for someone to cash in on our frustrations with the cube. In 1981 Patrick Bossett released the book You Can Do The Cube. Patrick wasn't the only one to cash in.
