Octogenarians are everywhere. Did you know that 80 is the new 40? Here is a cute article from the NY Daily News.

Did you know that in South Dakota, that people 80 years of age and older can now opt out of jury duty? Rep. Bill Van Gerpen, R-Tyndall, said the state owes its senior citizens the option of being excused from jury duty if they request it. Van Gerpen said some older citizens lie awake for nights before such duty, worrying about how they will handle the task. Some people feel that new situations bring greater stress.

Not everyone feels like that, but you need to take that into consideration when someone has their 80th birthday.

A birthday party is a great way for you to let your relative know how much you love him or her. Remembering the person's life and all that he or she has accomplished is certainly at the root of it. Be sensitive to the added stress that 80 years can feel, and keep the party simple - inviting close friends and family. Choose a special cake and have a photo of a special memory next to it or on the cake.

Decorations make the room very festive. While it is not easy to find balloons and other room decorations with the number 80, I have listed decorations below that you can purchase to make the party fun and reflect the 80th birthday.

Consider giving the simple gifts using the number 80, such as 80 M & M's wrapped up in a clear bag and tied with a ribbon. 80 pennies from the youngest member of the family, 80 nickels from the middle one, 80 dimes etc.

How about a bottle of wine from a year ending in 80? Be creative with how you can use the number 80. Consider adding a gift from a collection, where you and several people could give variations, such as coins for a collection, sports memorabilia, figurines, etc. I have shown you some examples below.

A great activity that you can plan ahead of time is to ask everyone to write down a favorite short memory of the birthday person. It can be as simple and as short as a funny hat they wore at a July 4th picnic, or a hug on your own birthday. At the party, go around the room and ask each person to read or share their memory.

The food should include favorite recipes that will be passed down through generations. Write the recipes on cards and pass them out to all of the guests as a keepsake or favor.

Keep the party simple and familiar, with some 80 Year Old items thrown in. Above all, remember to keep it as stress-free as possible!
