8 Told By Cuneo and Friends

Dawn brings the warmth of the summer morning. Seeking out all the coolness of the night. The activities are heighten, at Roosevelt's home, as each shades of gray leaves the air for the day and the warmth settles in. We all know, with this much commotion going on, we must be getting ready for a "Ride". I do so love the "Rides". We get to see so many new parts of the world, by standing in one place. Usually, we get to meet so many new friends. I love to sing my Opera! With this kind of morning, my tones are needed to help settle down my neighbors that I will travel with. I usually wait until after our "Ride", to sing my sweet songs. To give my vocal cords a rest. But now seems so perfect for one of my songs. So, I will sing for them now and look forward to our "Ride".

A few hours of riding, many new places to look at, we come to a stop. It feels so good to get out of the cramp area and look around. We each get our own space, food and water. But the others, are still a little upset from the "Ride". We do get to roll around in the dirt, which feels great! I can hear other new friends, talking about how gorgeous and soothing my Opera is to them! They tell me they can hear my floating songs all through the hills.

So I start with my favorite song. So I will sing to bring a blanket of comfort to them!

Uusally I don't get to go no further than my new pen. But that is alright. I get to hear the stories. I hear about the races, and see how everything gathers around them when they return. Checking them and pampering them.

I do see some of the strangest behaviors. Many of my friends, don't like shadows. Going up to the trails, from the main road, is especially a spooky area. So many shadows, that even a floating leaf, riding the soft air down to the ground, makes them freak out and go crazy! Many of the riders have to get off them and walk them up and back through the spooky area.

One new friend, from the pens down below, has a bad problem of staying awake! Her rider, tries to walk her to the beginning of the trail, but suddenly falls down and falls asleep! I have never seen that before. But after a few minutes, she is up and walking again.

Some of the others down in that area, don't like the small stream of water, that their riders tries to get them to cross. The rider walks up to the stream and takes a long stride across, but the friends just stop! The riders pull and tug, even walks them along the stream edge, to see if there is a different place they would seem more comfotable in crossing at. They still stop and hold their ground! After a long time, of pulling and tugging, my friends finally give in and try to jump in the riders' arms.

A very young and new friend, thinks he is a race horse. He prances and tries to show off to all the females. His rider, is also young and in my mind not to bright! She tries to get the young male to jump the large and heavy picnic tables. But that comes to a halt, when some of the other riders talk to the young girl. But still looking for excitement, she rides off on the young male, bare back, in shorts and no shoes! Not a smart move, if she ends up off my new friend, in the woods!

Another new friend, came back all excited. Telling me of the new fun ride. Finding a little river, at the bottom of a hill. He would run down the hill, splashing, then up the other side. He said he did this for hours and loved it!

Then ther is the old, Mister Grumpy. He hates everything and almost everyone, even my Opera! His rider just wanted a nice ride. But Mister Grumpy does not want to go nicely. So on the ride, at every hill, he would sit his rear down and slide all the way to the bottom of the hill. Then he would turn his head, looking over his shoulder, to the rider and give him the look of "Look What You Did!" This would get old for the rider, so Mister Grumpy would get his way and come back to his pen to listen to my Opera!

But with all the little adventures, that I did not get to go on, it was just as good to hear about them. The air would be charged with excitement, with so many new friends talking about their adventures or looking forward to one. I would stay, all safe in my pen, meeting all my new friends and singing to them. When the night darkness crept into the camp, we would all fall asleep, listening to my Opera, looking forward to our next day adventures.

8 Camp Host Version

Being a "Horse Campground", we were treated to many different kinds of horse and mules. I think, all the time we were Camp Host at the "Horse Campground", there was maybe one or two nights we were alone. People really loved to come up, ride the trails all day and camp by a campfire. Maybe, they were reliving the Old West?
Most people knew the rules and made no problems for us. They cleaned up after themselves and their horses, most of the time.
One time really sticks out in our minds. It was way after dark. Someone had a Jack Ass, that all day seemed to be yelling in a gruff, windy yell, "Help Me.. Help Me!" Over and over.
We had gotten used to it and since the other campers said nothing, we decided to do the same.
Late in the evening, the Park Ranger came by to make a round, making sure eveything is alright.
We saw the Park Ranger speed by our trailer, as we watched TV. I noticed through the back window, he had his color lights on.
I put on my boots and headed out to see if I could help him and see what was wrong.
The Ranger came back down the hill, winded. Explaining to me, once he got to our trailer, heard someone yelling for help!
He rushed up with his lights on, jumped out of the truck. With one hand on his gun and the other one holding a flashlight, searching with his flashlight beam. He finally saw the noise was coming from a Jack Ass. But his heart was still racing.
I laughed and explained we had been listening to that all day. Due to this, we did not think about that, when the Ranger rushed into the campground. We thought something really bad had happened!
He had just never heard anything like that, but neither had we!
