History of The Eight Track Player and Tape
Remember the 70s? I do! If you were born in the 60s, then you most likely
went through the 8 track player craze of the 70s. Admit it! You
had one and you probably wore out a few 8 track tapes along the way! Pink Floyd,
The Moody Blues, Boston, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, ELO. Bring back the
memories? First thing I did when I bought my first car back in 1970, was install
an under dash 8 track player. My first stereo also had a 8 track player in it.
When I was 18 I sold my stereo to my brother in law for $25. I can't believe he
still has it and it is still working just like the day I bought it.
Here is a Little History about the 8 track player
The coolest thing you could have in your home or car in the end of the 60's
and to the mid 70's was the 8-track tape stereo, which could play the popular
8-track cartridge. In the US you could buy 8-track cartridges until the mid 80's
so it was quite a long lasting format. The 8-track was created by Bill Lear in
1964.
The last cartridges and players

In the U.S., 8-track cartridges were phased out of retail stores by late 1982
(having disappeared from Europe about 4 years prior). Some titles were still
available as 8-track tapes through record clubs until late 1988. Many of these
late-period releases are highly collectible due to the low numbers that were
produced.
8-track players became less common in homes and automobiles in the late 1970s.
By the time the Compact Disc arrived in 1982-83, the 8-track had greatly
diminished in popularity.
Although the 8-track is often mistakenly dismissed as a failure today, at the
time it was a huge success from a commercial standpoint. It was the first truly
portable format of music, reaching a mass market and giving people the ability
to take their favorite music in the car, on the beach, or anywhere else for that
matter. Even today, 40 years after its debut, the 8-track has established a cult
following with avid collectors.

Oh man, does this take me back. I must have been 10 or 11 and got my very own 8-track player for Christmas! Wow, that was so cool, I got to borrow my parents' Bee Gees tape to play in my room. I felt special. Posted June 25, 2008 |
