90s Songs: Strange Period In The History Of Music

The diverse nature of 90s Songs makes it really difficult to categorize the 90's musical offerings under one genre. This is can be attributed to the emergence of wide range of genres and styles and also to the fact that no single artist or genre was able to dominate the 90s Songs era.

The early 90's witnessed the growth of grunge and alternative rock music and the decline in the popularity of classic rock music. 90s Songs such as "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana contributed significantly in making grunge music popular, bringing it into the mainstream. While the popularity of grunge receded in the latter half of the 90's, alternative rock music continued to grow right through the 90's and is still going strong with bands like Blink 182 and Green Day. The 90's were a time when songs based on urban pop became very popular. 90s Songs sung by singers like Mariah Carey, TLC and Boyz II Men were regularly played on the radio throughout the 90's. 90s Songs like "No Scrubs" and "One Sweet Day" continue to motivate other R&B singers even today. Urban pop music is considered to be more famous today than it ever was.

During the 90's another genre, Hip-Hop, became very popular and today has found a permanent place for itself among the various contemporary forms of music. MC Hammer, Snoop Dogg, Notorious B.I.G and 2Pac contributed in making this genre famous. The popular 90s Songs of this genre include Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise" and 2Pac's "Changes."

Teen pop music maintained a strong place in 90s Music, just as it had in the 80s. Of particular note were new female pop sensations and the rise of the boy band. 90s songs from popular bands and artists like the Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys, Christina Aguilera, and Britney Spears were regularly listed at the top of the charts throughout the world and dominated air time on pop music radio stations everywhere. This period definitely belonged to Teen Pop and was clearly dominated by the artists mentioned above. The chartbuster 90s Songs representing the Teen Pop genre include the Backstreet Boy's "As Long As You Love Me," Britney Spears "Baby One More Time" and Spice Girls "Wannabe." Of course, there are some pop music legends that rocked through the 80s and straight into the 90s. Madonna was as popular in the 90s as she was the 80s and her 90s songs such as "Take a Bow" and "Justify My Love" hit the top of the charts. As an aside, she made headlines in the 90s for more than just her songs. This was the era of her sex book and the "Truth or Dare" movie.

The number of genres such as grunge, alternative rock, hip-hop and teen pop that were part of 90's era marks a strange period in the history of the music as no one genre was able to completely dominate the entire 90's. To discover more about 90s Songs and Music visit: 90s411.com

90s Songs: List Of Best Sexiest 90s Songs

As discussed in the earlier article, the 90s was a decade of songs and music spanning a wide range of different musical genres, and it wasn't wanting when it came to sexy numbers. From mischievously sexy songs to those that were downright dirty, we have included below some of the sexiest 90s songs

Fiona Apple's "Criminal" - "I've been a bad, bad girl." The first line of this 90s song (1996) explains it all. The killer combination of those words and Fiona Apple's sensuous voice make this song very sexy. Top that off with a music video involving a scantily-clad waif enjoying an interesting party that included a lot of skin showing and water and you have one of the sexiest 90s songs of the decade.

Divinyls' "I Touch Myself" - The sexy and stunning lyrics of this song about self-love burst onto the scene in the summer of 1991. Sung by Christina Amphlett in her tantalizing voice, this song was omnipresent in the early 90s and made a much more direct business of, well, the business at hand (much more so than the relatively subtle "She Bop" of the 80s). 'When I think about you, I touch myself." Nuf said.

Blackstreet's "No Digitty" - I don't know what "No Diggity" stands for, but Blackstreet can make women want to work it by using those two small words. I don't remember any of the 90s songs that made the girls feel sexier while dancing at a club or before the mirror like "No Diggity" did during the 1990's. "I like the way you work it."

Alanis Morisette's "You Oughta Know" - A very angry Alanis Morisette, in this 90s song, made it clear to girls that they needn't cry while going through a breakup. Instead, they could get really upset and mad about what they are experiencing. Many guys found the anger and intensity portrayed by Alanis to be very sexy, pushing this empowerment ballad into the list of best sexy 90s songs. The fact that she refers to herself as "perverted" and further mentions pleasuring her man in a movie theater just adds to this already very sexy 90s song.

Nine Inch Nails' "Closer" - One of the sexiest of sexy 90s songs, "Closer" by NIN (also referred to as "Closer to God" and "Halo 9") is a really dirty song and not for the faint of heart. The expressive lyrics and deep beat made this song famous among those who were looking for something shocking and sexy. With lyrics that rhyme desecrate, violate, complicate, and penetrate (all in the first 35 seconds), NIN hit on a very specific mood with this 1994 hit. In fact, Closer was ranked #2 in AOL's "69 Sexiest Songs of All Time."

Third Eye Blind's "Semi-Charmed Life" - This is one of the top rollicking pop songs of the 90s and most of us sang along without paying much attention to the lyrics. However, if you carefully listen to the lyrics, you will make out that this cheerful, elating tune actually gets pretty warm.

Britney Spears' "Baby One More Time" - With this song, surely among the top sexiest 90s songs, many of us witnessed the launch of the 90's Madonna. Everyone loved the sensual lyrics and the sexy music video by young Britney Spears. What's not sexy about a midriff baring school girl in her uniform?! This video features Britney before she married Kevin, shaved her head, and forgot her under panties before going out for the night (NOT sexy!).

So if you want to relive the sexy 90's or experience the sexy feel of the 90's for the first time, just put on your low-cut jeans or hipsters and wear a belly chain around your waist (or, better yet, pierce your belly button) and play some of these sexy 90s songs.

90s Songs: One Hit Wonders Of 90s

Do you still remember all those catchy one-hit wonders from the 90s that still get played on your favorite music channel? Those famous 90s songs were what made the 1990's so entertaining. With a little bit of everything from pop music, country music, pop rock, alternative rock, to techno and more, the 90s songs will always be with us. Here are a few iconic examples of our favorite 90s songs.

Right Said Fred (1992) - Anyone who is an ardent fan of 90s songs will definitely recall the hit number "I'm Too Sexy" sung the two brothers, Fred Fairbrass and Richard Fairbrass in 1992. The two brothers moved around and showed off their bare chests and bald heads in the music video that made it to the top of the American charts. It was the first British group since The Beatles to achieve the number one position with their debut song. They were unable to repeat the success achieved by their first single with their follow-up songs in America, though they became hits in the United Kingdom. Later, the Fairbrass brothers formed their own record label, but soon lost their sizzle. Since then, Fred has been running a gym while Richard presents GayTime TV on BBC2.

Sir Mix-A-Lot (1992) - Sir Mix-A-Lot, born as Anthony Ray in 1963, is a producer and rapper that comes from Seattle, Washington, USA. He released many popular songs in the 80s and the beginning of the 90s like "One Time's Got No Case," "Beepers" and "My Hooptie," but the biggest hit from Sir Mix-A-Lot was 1992's "Baby Got Back," based on Miami Bass style. Many radio stations still play this song today. "Baby Got Back" went double platinum and won Mr. Mix-a-Lot a Grammy in 1993. The song is about women's bottom and his love for them. The song coined a new term "bootylicious" for "booty-full" women. This one-hit-wonder of the 90's is back in the news again with the release of the new Burger King ad with altered lyrics. The ad "I Like Square Butts" provoked mixed feelings among the parents.

Billy Ray Cyrus (1992) - No one who is a diehard fan of country music can ever forget the golden lyrics of the song "Achy Breaky Heart" that goes "But don't tell my heart.... my achy breaky heart . . . I just don't think it'd understand." This song by Billy Ray made to the top of the country charts in 1992. Once known as a one-hit-wonder, Cyrus is still producing music and proven that he has the power to stay, even if his legendary mullet didn't. Star of a few popular films, including "Death And Texas" and "Elvis Has Left The Building" and the TV show "Doc," Billy is also known for his contributions towards humanitarian causes. He is also well known as the father of teen sensation Miley Cyrus.

What a fun era to write about. My favorites wouldn't necessarily be yours--but that just shows what a wide variety of music was coming out during that decade. Nice job.

Awesome lens. The 90's were the era of grown up Disney girls it seems, but the music was good.
