Harris Ranch Restaurant and Inn, Coalinga, CA 93210

Ranked #7,723 in Travel & Places, #206,839 overall | Donates to Squidoo Charity Fund, ASPCA

If you are driving the most boring stretch of I-5, in the San Joaquin Valley between LA and San Francisco, there is an oasis half way between the two! Harris Ranch Restaurant and its accompanying inn are worth viewing. The restaurant food is great and the inn is very nice. This treasure is located in the Zip Code of my home town, 93210,(NO NOT 90210). I know quite a bit about the place. The dining room has a more expensive menu than the coffee shop. But the coffee shop is the quality of the many fine restaurants, so save a buck and eat in there. There is a great gift shop, beautiful fountains, lots of palm trees, and lounge with old west theme. This is a must see place, sort of the equivalent to the Madonna Inn on highway 101.

Newfound Fame for Coalinga

Recently, AT&T ran a commercial where a fellow was able to get a signal out somewhere on a dusty road half way between Coalinga and King City.

Coalinga-isms.

This is a local deal. The rest of you could avoid this!

A tribute to the quaint town of Coalinga, California...loved by some, but not understood by many or even heard of by most.

* Instead of people thinking you are "rich" for having leather seats, they think you are stupid.

* You laugh when people complain about 95 degree weather.

* You are not worried about the big California fires because there is nothing to burn except tumbleweeds.

* You remember when favorite entires in the Toad Derby parade would go around to the end and come through again and, if the parade was too short, the fire trucks and school buses would fill in.

* You know what tule fog is.

* You remember the two times in the last 50 years that it snowed in Coalinga, and you remember everything you did on that snow day.

* Everyone says that they're going to leave, but you know that if you try, you get sucked right back in.

* You know where all the haunted houses are when Halloween comes around and who gives the best treats.

* Huron is in a world all its own.

* People who actually made it out of this town sit here and laugh at these because they know they are true.

* On really special years, the residents of the nursing home would be pushed through the parade route in their wheel chairs.

* You think a snowman made from tumbleweeds is a Christmas decoration.

* The "water train" from Armona was not a joke.

* The boys knew the Security First National Bank's 'railing' was there for lounging purposes to watch all the girls go by.

* You knew some of the kids arrived on the bus from "The Nose Run".

* You knew why there were three faucets at the kitchen sink, and what each one was for.

* You know the location of Dodge Hill and what "the slab" is.

* You knew what "crusing Main" was and how long you could cruise on a quarter's worth of gas.

* You know that Valley Fever isn't a disco dance

* The entire town turns out for Horned Toad Derby and the highest honor for a high school senior girl was Queen of this event.

* You know the pool is usually warmer than you are.

* You think you are better than the people from Avenal.

* A 'stop sign' is simply a clue to slow down.

* Anywhere that takes longer than a 5 minute drive is way too far; you could walk or ride a bike there anyway, if it isn't too hot...or cold.

* You know a "swamp cooler" is not a happy hour drink.

* You didn't know what a 'stop light' was until the 90's.

* You knew what a sump hole was, and why it turned the sky black.

* A round of golf at Polvadero was like a trek over tundra, complete with scorpions.

* When someone said "meet me at the plunge, the State or the Sugar Bowl" you knew where to go.

* You no longer associate bridges or rivers with water.

* You know Horned Toads and we're not talking about frogs.

* You actually get these jokes and pass them on to other friends from Coalinga. The rest will be scratching their heads.
