The Little Fox: The Best Music Venue on the San Francisco Peninsula Plans to Reopen!

The Little Fox is a small comfortable venue in downtown Redwood City. It has been closed since December 2009, but its new owner Eric Lochtefeld plans to reopen it.

In the past The Little Fox has hosted many types of music, including the free Redwood City Blues Jam, singer/songwriter Pierre Bensusan, many tribute acts such as Led Zeppelin Live, and comedy acts such as legendary comic Bob Rubin.

They have a seating capacity of 240, a dance floor, 2 bars, and a lounge area. The Little Fox is a sister venue to the Fox Theatre in the revitalized downtown of Redwood City, CA. They are both slated to reopen, although it is past the target date of August 2010.

When they do reopen, come early and check out great restaurants, artist studios, and interesting shops in historic downtown Redwood City. After all, in 1925 Redwood City's Climate made big news, and it's slogan became "Climate Best By Government Test." You can still see the proud signs arching over the street that were erected by early residents.

Redwood City is an up and coming city with a revitalized town center. In the summer the highlight of the weekend is to come down to the courthouse square with your lawn chairs and picnic and listen to great music, which varies from week to week.

Across from the courthouse is the Fox Theatre, often called the Big Fox Night Club and host to such acts as Lily Tomlin and Dana Carvey. The Little Fox is right next door.

Redwood City Restaurants

City Pub
One of my favorite restaurants. Their "pub food" is high quality, including burgers of beef, turkey, salmon, or veggie, but doesn't stop at burgers. The menu also includes a great salmon dinner, crab cakes, great pasta dishes, and a variety of yummy appetizers. Micro brews and a streetside patio help make this a great destination before a show.
Milagros Cantina
This is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants. The decor features authentic artifacts from Mexico, making it a really fun destination. Great margaritas, great guacamole, great food, and a streetside patio. What more can you ask for?
Tarboosh
This Lebanese restaurant serves some great food and entertainment. Reservations are mandatory on weekends. Be aware that beginning at 9:30 they have entertainment, so plan accordingly if that's not your style. Last I checked they had a cover or minimum on Friday and Saturday, so check before you go.
Flaming Fresco
This authentic Mexican restaurant is a gem. I'm sure I'm totally misplacing the style of food, but it reminds me of the wonderful food I had in Puebla, Mexico. The website is beautiful, too, and the pictures make my mouth water. Located just around the corner, in the same historic building, as the Little Fox. Unfortunately just beer and wine are currently available, but the food is worth it-have a drink over at Milagros if you're set on a margarita, then cruise on over...
Alana's Cafe
A great spot for "housemade" breakfast and lunch, Alana's serves you in the cozy rooms of a historic home, or outdoors in a wonderful Victorian garden. Next door, in another historic home, is an art cooperative called The Gallery.

Strolling Around Redwood City

Downtown Redwood City is fun to wander around. The new Courthouse Square is beautiful, and there are many historic buildings being renovated. Lots of great restaurants (see links above) and shops, and a Century Movie Theatre practically next door to the Little Fox.

An interesting shop to check out is the Gourmet Haus Staudt, offering fine gifts from Germany such as bier steins, fine glassware, porcelain, and Hummel figurines. They also have both a cafe and a bier stube (entrance around back).

If you have kids in tow, or are feeling like a kid yourself, don't miss Young's Ice Cream and Candy Bar. It has an old-fashioned ice cream parlor theme and is located in a historic building. I believe it was once a pharmacy.

Beautiful photos. I drove through Redwood City quickly on one of my trips to California, but didn't have time to stick around long. Excellent job!

I love live music too. We have in our area not only a wonderful venue known as the Fraze, but Downtown Dayton there is the Oregon District. The OD is loaded with great little dives that feature music most nights and some nights the music is free. Where the Fraze is an outdoor Amphitheater that seats no more than 4000. I have seen Alice Cooper, Bonnie Raitt, Kenny Wayne Shepard, and a host of others there.

What's really cool is the talent here. These days it's mostly in the form of Blues axmen who have opened for such great festivals as the Chicago Blues Fest and The Austin City Blues Fest.

Dayton is also known as the home of Funk. Most of the members of the Ohio Players grew up here and at least one other top named Funk band called Dayton home; Zapp.

OOOOOOPS! Looks like I just created a lens in your guestbook :D

    Thanks for this!
