Tracy, California - Living in the Tracy Triangle

Ranked #4,391 in Travel & Places, #130,582 overall

Tracy Has More Going on than What You'd Expect! (What Were You Expecting?)

The Tracy Triangle - formed by I-5 on the East, I-580 on the West, and I-205 on the North

Every weekday morning between 4:30am and 8am, the 3 above-mentioned freeways become slow-moving parking lots as California Central Valley residents pack-it-up and go through the Altamont Pass Gauntlet (you have time to admire the windmills shown in the picture here) - over the hill - on the way to Livermore, Pleasanton, Silicon Valley, the East Bay, the Penninsula, and San Francisco (aka "The City").

In the meantime, while the commuters are winding their ways through some of the streets bordered by tomato fields, corn fields, pepper fields, alfafa fields, dairy farms, and residential developments, the rest of the town comes to life.

Downtown Tracy resembles your stereotypical old-western town. Tracy started as a coaling station and switching area for the many trains coming through the area that linked Sacramento with other cities in the Central Valley as well as the East-West trains linking the San Francisco Bay Area with the rest of the U.S.

Tracy Island Online
When founder Joleen Ruffin's husband Quincy made the comment that Tracy was "like an island" in the middle of the I-5, 208, and 580 corridor, the name sort of stuck and Joleen formed the Tracy Island Online local regional social network. It started as just a place for local moms to arrange play-dates for their pre-school youngsters... but before long, the dads got into the swing of things... and then, some of the moms and dads who owned businesses in town also jumped in and.... well... before Joleen realized it, she had a movement...and a very popular local network and place to gather for residents of Tracy and the surrounding area. Check out this group!
Altamont Cowork
Mike Pihlman created this innovative alternative to unbearable commutes to the Bay Area, Silicon Valley, and San Francisco. Coworking is becoming a tidal wave phenomenon -- used mostly by younger entrepreneurs who want the advantage of an office environment, but who don't want to be constrained by the walls and cubicles of traditional offices. Coworking is perfect for independent contractors and freelance writers, editors, software developers, attorneys, inventors, artists, web-designers, and others who do most of their work online and by phone with only a few client meetings at their place of work. I've never been closer than the I-5 freeway, ad for some reason I associate Tracy with the smell of many cattle in one place. Or am I thinking only of a place near Tracy? Maybe with a freeway sign mentioning that Tracy is ahead?

Well... Tracy *is* in agricultural country... and yes, we *do* have a few dairy farms that can get pretty ripe when the wind is blowing the wrong direction. But, normally, the air isn't bad. If you want *real* stinky, try driving by Coalinga or King City area in June or July when it's 100-degrees. Also, up I-5 from us is a stretch between Lathrop and Sacramento--lots of dairy farms on both sides of the road--that area also gets pretty stinky. The joys of living in an agricultural area, right? Tracy *does* have a lot to offer. Thanks for dropping by my lens!
