1996 Toyota Tacoma Questions & Answers

Question: I have a 96 toyota tacoma and the air conditioning only works half of the time. Any suggestions?
Sometimes I turn it on and it works fine and sometimes it just doesnt'. It does have freon. Can someone help me please!!! Summer is coming!!!

Answer: If you have freon in the system then that's why it doesn't work. Your vehicle doesn't use freon, it uses refrigerant. I would take it to a shop and have the r12 taken out if thats the case and have them put r134 in it.

Question: What's the best oil and best oil filter to use on my 96' Toyota Tacoma 2wd truck? it's got 60,000 miles.
I was told certain high end oils and high end filters "Actually" are all marketing and they are no good, One guy told me to use only Havoline ,, and never use a _____ filter (but i forgot which he said not to use) ... thanks !

Answer: Lol, that blank would say FRAM...... the bypass valves are cheap, and more then often defective.... the filter media is cheap and thin, and usually warped.... the endcaps (holds the media together) is thin and cheaply glued on CARDBOARD. and of course the threads usually have shavings on them....

Valvoline is good oil, just uses the bare amount of addititves to pass the api....

Havoline is a great oil to use..... for oil filters, I'd either use purolator or wix (napa gold) filters..... I personally use wix, the filters are tanks. For oil weight..... I'd stick with 5w-30.... it acts like a 5 weight in the winter (hense "W" stands for winter) and at operating temp its a 30 weight.... gives great startup flow. More over 10w-30 in the cold.

Fram is all name, and cruddy construction..... the only good filter they make costs over 10 bucks.... why would you pay that much and get the same around 5 or 6?

Question: My 96 Toyota Tacoma is pulsating on braking AGAIN !?
Ive had the rotors turned 2-3x now. Started after new pads
put on last summer: brake shop says its me + Its Toyota:
if that were the case-it would have warped/pulsated its first
80K of life ! Now -it ONLY pulsates on HIGH speed stops ONLY.
Not ALL stops as last time. Theres room for one more turn. Should I just live with it? Replace pads and rotors? Is a little shimmy normal? Inspection recently (pre shimmy) showed calipers fine, even wear...disscoloration on rotor from heat.
Enough room for 1 turn more if needed.

Answer: check the rear brakes, too.

My '98 Rodeo has such lousy rear brakes that if the e brake is applied when the vehicle is in motion at all the drums will warp. It's been this way since it was bought new. 80000 miles and I did all the brakes last fall, turned rotors and drums, bought good aftermarket pads and shoes and a few weeks later the drums are warped again, ugh!

I may be done with the Rodeo, because it was smashed last week. Waiting for the estimate.

Question: Why won't my 96' toyota tacoma pass a california smog test (NOx readings)?
i failed the NO portion of the test. my truck measured 1237ppm where the max is 556ppm. it passed the visual and functional areas of the test. my engine is in good condition for a 1996. has 198k miles but with routine maintenance. i read that to make a marginal vehicle pass to treat fuel with a detergent of some sort to clean injectors, etc. it also said to change the oil and make sure it is warmed up to normal operating temp. i also changed the spark plugs upon recommendation from my dad. the mechanic running the test offered to run diagnostics on it for $80 but i would rather try to fix it myself. does anyone have some suggestions as to what the problem is and what i can do to fix it. responses are greatly appreciated.

Answer: How can and obd2 vehicle fail Nox? They just check for codes on that vehicle unless California does something different. If your Nox is high either your catalytic converter is bad or you have an egr issue.

Question: What is the biggest tire i can put on my 4X4 96 tacoma?
what is the biggest tire i can put on my toyota tacoma without putting a lift kit on it?

Answer: Max without rubbing is 31x10.50 on 2000 and under taco's.

I've heard with some trimming you can stuff 32x11.5s, but not sure you want to get that involved.

Question: Toyota '96 gas mileage?
can anyone guess about what a '96 toyota tacoma with three inch lift and little bit bigger than average tires would get in gas mileage

Answer: 4 cylinder engine- 22 mpg with stick transmission-19 mpg with auto, The V-6 =16 mpg with stick, 13 mpg with auto

Question: Does a toyota 96 have a carburetor?
ok i don't know anything about cars. but there's this piece off of the car. right under the thing where you can rev the motor from under the hood. i was told by some worker's at autozone that it's a choke pull-off. but when i called other places looking for it. they said a 96 toyota tacoma. 2.7L is fuel injected and not carburated. and only carburated cars have a choke pull-off. i don't want to order a choke-pull off and it turns up to be something else....

Answer: Fuel injected autos do not need a choke and so do not have one. Take it to a garage and ask them what the part is.
