964 Porsche: In 1989 Porsche introduced the 964, (pronounced Nine Sixty Four) the number 964 refers to the company's internal name for the new version of the Porsche 911 model. It was manufactured and distributed between 1989 and 1994; actual models are from 1990 through to 1994.

The car underwent major changes, among these are integrated fenders. It was the first generation of the 911s to use a Tiptronic Automatic Transmission. Also among changes was the 964 Carrera 4, it was the production normally aspirated 911 to utilize the all wheel drive technology. By the way it is still the only Porsche 911 that used an all mechanical all-wheel-drive system.

The Carrera 4 was also the first 911 Porsche to utilize an ABS system. It was also the only model to make use of an electronically controlled traction control system. Both the Carrera 2 and 4 were available in Coupe (closed car body style).

The 964 Carrera 2 was derived from the Carrera 4. It utilized all the new technologies that were used on the Carrera 4 except for traction control and the all-wheel-drive technologies.

Due to these changes to the Porsche 964, arguably it is believed to be over 80% new with respect to body style and trims, relative to its predecessor the Porsche 930 Carrera.

In order to distinguish the 964 from other generations of Carrera, Porsche enthusiasts typically refer to it as the 964.
