How To Live Fully In The Face Of Death and Grief

We are in the middle of doing a Customer Service presentation to our entire Labor and Delivery staff at the Women Babies Hospital, Lancaster General Health, where I work. The theme is living each day as if it were your last; treating people with kindness and respect; and valuing every aspect of life.

Randy Pausch gives his last lecture on the Oprah Winfrey show and dies a few days later.

Little Eliot Hartman Mooney lives 99 days and teaches his family how to love.

We enter the hospital everyday not knowing what sort of life and death issues we will have to face.

We did a Customer Service presentation last year, too.

99 Balloons

Tribute To Eliot Hartman Mooney, Trisomy 18 Infant

The following video is the reason why our hospital now has a Palliative Care Program.

When all parties concerned saw this film, the decision was made to institute a top notch Palliative Care Program for families who know their baby will be born with only a short time to live.

Premature Babies Who Die Of Severe Anomalies

I spoke to a patient this week who lost her baby at 25 weeks gestation due to severe anomalies.

She told me she would not change anything about the situation because of the people she met, the love and the miracles she experienced as a result of losing her baby.

After watching the 99 Balloons and Randy Pausch videos and listening to the Nichelbach song over and over (I even learned to play it on my violin) and after talking to this patient, I had a strong realization.

When people are in the middle of what the world calls a tragedy, they are being drawn closer to the Divine and what we call in spiritualist circles, Universal Intelligence.

They are learning to live in the present moment through grief and suffering and through transcendence and transformation.

So if we as Nurses can get into the grief AND the miracle, then we will be better nurses AND better people, as a result!!

Randy Pausch's Original "Last Lecture" At Carnegie Mellon

This is a wonderful speech, but long. Randy Pausch seems happier with a great sense of humor. He was dead serious on Oprah.

Then again, he died a few days later after he appeared on Oprah.
