9 Told By Cuneo and Friends
Cuneo had gone scouting other campgrounds. But did not have much luck in finding something to fill his stomach.
He kept wandering and grumbling. The visions of his favorite berry patch, could not stay out of his mind! So he headed out for his favorite berry patch.
At one of the edges of the campground, Cuneo could hear all kinds of noises. He sat and watched all the activities.
At one point, he thought he could sneak along the road, thinking no one would notice him.
But almost the same time as one of his paws hit the road, he heard someone yelling at him! Then those terrible thumps, over and over. So off he ran, but just into the first bunch of bushes. He sat thinking.
He decided to walk behind the bushes some more and then try it again. But again, as soon as his paw was just about to touch the road, the yelling and the hard thumps started. He ran again, twice the distance he had gone before. He had to get to his berries, apples and pear trees. They did not belong to those 2 legged things, they wre his!
He found a good place to wait. Dark, quite and he could see everything going on.
Cuneo sat waiting for those 2 legged things to leave his trees.
This was making Cuneo so mad! He started wandering along the bushes at the edge of the road, again. He found a waterhole. They were scattered throughout this area and Cuneo loved to sit in them.
This waterhole overlooked the area. Cuneo climbed in and sat with his head on the rim.
The water seemed to wash all his frustrations away. Maybe, now he found a place that the tall 2 legged things did not seemed to think was theirs!
It did not take too long befoe the 2 legged things spotted Cuneo and started to yell.
Now this was not safe, so off Cuneo went into the forest. Baffled and hungry!

9 Camp Host Version
Campers seem to think the whole area they are in, are theirs! From the squirrels, deer, bees to the bears, they seem to invade the "Camper's Space".We watched, as Cuneo tried to walk down the campground road. The other campers throwing rocks and yelling at him. Finally he climbed into one of the horse troughts. Sat there for the longest time, with his chin on the rim. Just looking around. We could just imagine what was going on in his head!
I have mixed feelings about how to handle bears. Some Rangers and "experts" say yell, use the bear horn and anything it takes to get the bears to leave the area, everytime we see them! This is to have the bears relate the noise and the bad feelings to people and then they will stay away.
Others, as I feel, say leave them alone. If possible, back up and usually the bears will leave. Only resort to the bear horn, mace and other things, if the bear does not leave or is aggressive!
A few nights, we sat eating dinner, looking out our big window beside the dinning room table. We watched Cuneo come a few yards from us, as he walked slowly across our view, then went on his way.
A number of evenings, as we walked over to the campground showers, there was Cuneo around the building. We yelled and off he ran, never looking back!
He seemed to try to avoid us, if possible. Maybe this was because of others, with their horns, mace, rocks and such! Maybe we raked in the benefits of other campers, Rangers and people using the aggressive actions on the bear!
I will never know. We were very fortunate to have that time living among them and watching them. Nobody was hurt on our watch, as Camp Host.
We have so many memories and pictures!
