9 Foods You Never Ate:
Well, maybe you have eaten them, but more often than not, I find these food which I eat, are unknown to others, and when I tell them about any one of them they go: "Huh? What's that?". I'll keep adding to this list until I can come up with 9 different things.* First on my list is the Pomegranate. I don't know about where you come from, but around here Pomegranates are very seasonal, available only for a few weeks in December, and cost $2.99 a piece, so I don't get to eat them very often, and it's quite a luxury when I do, but I love them, and would eat them every day if I could!
* Second has to be Fiddleheads. Fiddleheads are a very rare little plant that grows in the local swamps. Fiddleheads are pure heaven to the taste buds, with a rich buttery, musky flavor, somewhat like a cross between asparagus and buttered mushrooms. You have two choices: head out to the woods, fight off black flies, wade through peat bogs and pick them yourself, or find a farm stand on the road side and pay from $4.99 - $12.99 a pound for these delicate plants from someone who already did the swamp wading for you. These are only in season one week of the year in late April or early May, and must be picked while still in bud form as they are poisonous once they bloom.
* Third is Moxie. Another local food, this one a drink, originally sold in the early 1800's under the name of Snake Oil, it is now a soda, made with a bitter tasting herb, and is described by it's fans as tasting like a dead snake boiled in kerosene. It is the official drink of the State of Maine.
* Fourth on my list is Pierogi. Part pasta, part pastry, a Pierogi is a kind of dumpling made from potato and cheese, and either fried or boiled, and served with butter. They have a delicate texture and a rich heavenly flavor.
* Next has to be Tender Bits. Tender Bits are a meatless form of lamb tender loin, made out of soy protein. Never having eaten lamb, I have no idea if they taste like lamb or not, but they sure do taste good in a stir-fry with Nappa, rice, and turmeric.
* Rhubarb are a strange bitter fruit, tasting sort of like strawberries mixes with raw lemons. They make the most amazing pies, thus giving them the common nick name of "Pie Fruit".
I'll be featuring lenses for each of these food items, as I find them.
