The Great Mobile Home Move

This is part two in the continuing saga of The Great Mobile Home Move". Well maybe it wasn't really a great big saga but it sure felt like one. In the first part we had to find a mobile home mover that would work with our limited budget; enter Bill Durbin Mobile Home Transport. See my lens "Best Mobile Home Transport In Oklahoma" to read the whole story.

To recap, I was in a bad situation and needed to move my double wide mobile home asap. If you've ever moved a double wide you know they run $4000.00 to 6000.00 to move one and that's if you're not moving too far. Needless to say I didn't have that much money sitting around, I was definitely between a rock and hard spot. Thankfully I came across Bill Durbin's Mobile Home Transport and "we got er done".

Now that moving our 37, 000 lb. double wide mobile home was behind us our next step was to find a plumber, electrician, and a heating and air service that were familiar with mobile home set-ups. When a mobile home is moved to a new location it falls into the city's new home construction category and can't be lived in until you get a building permit and go through the cities building inspections. These contractors would need to be familiar with the city's building codes for mobile homes; there would be building inspections, electrical inspections, plumbing inspections (gas & plumbing) and mechanical inspections (air conditioning) and each inspection would need to be done by a licensed professional. Mobile Homes can be tricky and temperamental and not all contractors know how to or are capable of working on them. Our next search was to find licensed professionals who knew mobile homes and could do the building set up without charging astronomical fees. Again getting a double wide mobile home back in working order is a very expensive proposition. It can range anywhere from 5,000 to 8,000 depending on the home. We needed reasonable prices for quality work.

Which Contractor Should I Use?

Building Codes for InspectionsIn a previous job I worked as a Community Manager for one of the largest operators of manufactured housing communities in the country. Over a six year period I managed several of their Mobile Home Communities in the Oklahoma City Area. During those years as a company we worked with and contracted with many different building contractors, electrician, plumbers, and heating and air people. As an insider I knew which of the many building contractors and mobile home repair vendors were good and which were not so good, From experience I also knew they could be very expensive. I was faced with the dilemma of trying to find individuals who could perform the work or finding one company that could do it all. I chose to look for one contractor that could handle everything or at least most of it, that would mean less headache for me and usually a better price.

One Of The Good Guys

Mobile Home Under ConstructionOne of the contractors I worked with while managing the mobile home parks was a young man named David Rollison, a.k.a. American Mobile Home Repair. I knew David's company to be fair and honest, hard working, reliable and respectful. I called David, told him our story and without hesitation he was willing to help us with whatever we needed to get the mobile home set-up. We put our heads together, worked out the details and came to an agreement with a price that worked for us both. Things were really looking up. The great thing about American Mobile Home Repair is they are able to do it all, kind of like one-stop shopping. David would be able to supply all of the licensed professionals that we would need; a plumber who would also take care of all plumbing and gas lines, an electrician and the heating and air people, yes and even the skirting. American is a complete mobile home service, fully licensed and insured. Whatever you need, whether its repairs, installation or set up American Mobile Home Repair can handle it and do it for a fair price. David is " One of the Good Guys".

Side Note

Just as a side note I wanted to say my experience is from the heart. I don't get any money for recommending David and his team. I'm not related or anything like that. I was very fortunate in my role as a community manager to get to know many what we called vendors. That included electricians, air conditioning companies, plumbers, mobile home movers and set up and repair crews, just about anyone or anything connected to mobile homes and the communities where they are parked. Some were shady, others okay and a very few were exceptional.

When the chips were down and I was up against a wall these men, Bill Durbin and David Rollison came to my aid. Because they were so good to me I wanted to let the world know companies like this one are out there, are honest and have a good work ethic.

When the home first landed I was actually using another crew. Unfortunately they didn't hold up their end of the bargain and I was left with electrical and plumbing problems. David came along and bailed me out. God Bless him for that because I really don't know what I would have done.

I guess what I'm trying to say is this is not a hype story or boloney. It's just the facts. And again, I get no compensation or anything else for my recommendations I just want to return the favor to two very wonderful guys..

I'll have to pass this link on to a friend of mine who travels the country and lives in a nice mobile home. I know he passes through that area once in a while.

Denali 115-Piece Home Repair Tool Kit

Perfect for the home, shop, apartment, condo or RV

Denali 115-Piece Home Repair Tool Kit

Amazon Price: $60.87 (as of 05/25/2012)Buy Now

Every home needs a good set of basic tools, and kits are a great way to get them at a considerable savings. This kit includes all of the tools you need for just about any household chore, from hanging pictures to fixing a leaky faucet. They are of good quality and should handle all of your household chores and repairs for many years to come.

WHAT'S IN THE BAG
Hammer
This 16-ounce ripping hammer with heavy duty fiberglass handle is a medium-weight hammer that will handle most household jobs, with claws for pulling nails.
Torpedo level
A good sturdy level is a must for hanging or straightening pictures, checking tabletop alignment, or mounting towel bars and curtain rods. This 9-inch, aluminum model is accurate, lightweight and easy to handle.
Tape measure
The 3/4-inch wide by 16-foot long tape measure has a thumb lock, metric and English markings, marks for placing studs every 16-inches, a belt clip, and a soft-grip rubber shell that makes it easy to grip and comfortable to hold.
Heavy-duty zinc utility knife with rubber grip
Wrenches
16-piece hex key set
These are also called Allen wrenches. The kit comes with 8 in metric and 8 in English measurements.
6-piece combination wrench set with steel clip
Pliers
8-inch needle- nose pliers with wire-cutting blades, useful for getting into small spaces and gripping small nails, screws, nuts, etc. (meets or exceeds ANSI standards)
8-inch diagonal pliers (meets or exceeds ANSI standards)
8-inch groove-joint pliers(meets or exceeds ANSI standards)
7-inch nickel-coated locking pliers are essential for getting a good, solid grip, especially when working in small spaces that don't allow you to grip with your full strength.
wire cutters
Screwdrivers
Wow, you'd never imagine needing a star-drive screwdriver, until you buy that fancy new European dishwasher. Denali's kit includes a ratcheting handle with a selection of interchangeable bits to provide an exceptional array of screwdrivers in all sizes and head shapes. The ratcheting handle is a nice feature, making it a lot easier to drive screws that are upside down or in tough to see places, where you really don't want release pressure on the screwdriver handle to keep turning it.
14 flat head: 4, 5, 6, and 7 mm and 3/32-, 1/8-, 5/32-, 3/16- (x3), 7/32-, and 1/4- (x3) inch
9 Phillips head: 1x2, 2x5, and 3x2
3 square head: S1, S2, and S3
10 star head: T6, T7, T8, T10, T15, T20, T25, T27, T30, and T40
10 hex: 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 mm and 1/8-, 5/32-, 3/16-, 7/32-, and 1/4-inch
4 Pozidriv: PZ0, PZ1, PZ2, and PZ3
Poszidriv screws are similar to Phillips head screws, but are less prone to slippage at high torque and so provide better performance when working with air and power tools. Note that Pozidriv screwdrivers are likely to slip or tear out the screw head when used in Phillips screws.
14 nut drivers
Drill Bits
This is interesting, since the kit doesn't come with a drill. The manufacturers apparently assume that either you have a cordless drill and will appreciate a couple of good bit sets, or that if you don't have one, you should get one. They're right. If you don't have a good, basic, cordless drill, you'll appreciate it when you do. Check out Amazon's selection of cordless drills.
13-piece titanium-coated high-speed steel with steel case: 1/4-, 15/64-, 7/32-, 13/64-, 3/16-, 11/64-, 5/32-, 9/64-, 1/8-, 7/64-, 3/32-, 5/64-, and 1/16-inch
50-piece chrome vanadium steel 1-inch screwdriver bit set can be used with either a cordless drill or the ratcheting screwdriver included in this kit.
5-piece masonry bit set with steel case: 5/32-, 3/16-, 1/4-, 5/16-, and 3/8-inch
