Hamilton Slow Cookers

The slow cooker or as it is sometimes known as a crock-pot, or slo-cooker. But at the end of the day they are all the same thing. They are an electrical item that sits in the kitchen on top of the unit and over a period of several hours it will cook. Slow cookers all have the same design.

A slow cooker consists of a lidded round or oval cooking pot made of glazed ceramic or porcelain, surrounded by a housing, this is usually metal, containing a thermostatic controlled electric heating element. The lid is often transparent glass or plastic so you can see what is cooking and is seated in a groove in the pot edge; condensed vapour collects in that groove and provides a low-pressure seal to the atmosphere. Pressure inside a working crock pot is therefore effectively at atmospheric pressure, despite the water vapor generated inside the pot. A crock pot therefore is substantially different from a pressure cooker and presents no danger of an abrupt (perhaps explosive) pressure release.
