A short stay in Paris

Ranked #54,190 in Travel & Places, #1,378,061 overall

If you are planning to visit Europe then you must stay at least a couple of days in one of its largest cities, Paris; also known as affectionately as the City of Lights. For most people visiting Paris, a short stay is often the way they first see the city; you will however, discover that more time is required to fully appreciate what it has to offer.

It is renowned for its wonderful Gothic inspired buildings and street markets; it is the home of the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and many other famous tourist attractions. Visitors to Paris as well as its citizens can travel around Paris easily; there is an excellent underground system called the Metro which runs regular trains into the city center and is very easy to understand.

You can't miss the Eiffel Tower, mainly because it's over three hundred meters high; it's visible throughout most of the city but the views from the top of this huge steel structure are even more impressive. You can be assured of an even more beautiful sight if you visit in the evening when it is illuminated; guided tours are available where the patriotic tour guides give you an in depth history and an insight to what it is to be French.

A trip down the Champs Elysees is encouraged when you visit Paris as this is the city's most famous street; it will present you with many famous designer shops and good restaurants. This is considered a more exclusive and busy area of the city; the average tourist may find the accommodation expensive but more modest hotels can be found away from this area.

If you are an art lover you will enjoy the Louvre, a truly amazing museum; with over 300,000 wonderful artistic works, you simply cannot see all of it in one day. If you are in Paris on a short stay you must plan your time well; many of the world's art collections are housed here, which includes the renowned 'Mona Lisa'. Paris has attracted world famous artists for hundreds of years; chances are that you will have the opportunity to see a number of famous paintings whilst you're visiting.

The Arc de Triomphe another famous landmark was built by Napoleon in 1806; to honor his generals (and his troops) he had their names inscribed upon it. Although not generally well known, the Arc had an observatory installed after it was constructed to provide views of neighboring areas; it stands in the place where the city's main avenues begin including the Champs Elysees.

This city has a huge variety of places to visit, many of these have not even mentioned here; there are plenty of others to keep you occupied but to make the most of your time, use one of the guided tours. It is fair to say that you won't see everything on a Paris short stay of two or even three day break; the likes of medieval churches, buildings and castles, which it has in abundance, will have to wait until another time.
