A trip to Paris

Ranked #54,191 in Travel & Places, #1,378,066 overall

If you are planning to visit Europe then you must stay at least a couple of days in one of its largest cities, Paris; the river it straddles, the Seine, also has two islands, situated in the oldest part of the city. Renowned for its modern art and breathtaking scenery a short stay in Paris is the ideal location for a romantic weekend break; there is so much to see and do that often only the main tourist attractions can be fitted in.

A city famous for its fabulous architecture, good food, wine, street markets and galleries; these include the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, markets and a history only matched by a few other European cities. Traveling around Paris is relatively easy for visitors as well as locals; the Metro underground system is easy to understand, efficient and reaches everywhere even the most enthusiastic tourist would want to visit.

The Eiffel Tower at over 300 meters tall and is a magnificent steel structure; there are only a few places in the city where it isn't visible. In the evening the illumination means it can be seen for many miles; guided tours add to the thrill as you get to peek into history on how it was constructed.

A trip down the Champs Elysees is encouraged when you visit Paris as this is the city's most famous street; it's where you will find all the top class hotels, shops and restaurants. This is considered a more exclusive and busy area of the city; top class hotels are found here, although if you want to stay at a more reasonably priced hotel, they are available outside of the city center.

The city's famous museum, the Louvre is huge and worth a visit if you have the time; it houses over three hundred thousand exhibits but not all of them are ever on display at the same time. If you are in Paris on a short stay you must plan your time well; with so many visitors (around eight million), sometimes it can be difficult seeing some of the famous works. Over the years, Paris has been home to many of the world's famous artists; chances are that you will have the opportunity to see a number of famous paintings whilst you're visiting.

Of course, Napoleon commissioned the construction of the Arc de Triomphe, another Paris landmark; to honor his generals (and his troops) he had their names inscribed upon it. It also features an observatory to take in surrounding views; in particular those obtained along the lanes that lead from it.

Certainly it is not fair to believe that these are the only places in the city worth visiting; and whilst there are many more worthy examples, those listed here should not be missed. Most people find their Paris short stay vacations exciting but only see a glimpse of what's on offer; this article has not even discussed the topic of medieval castles and gothic churches which the city has in abundance.
