Turn Based Strategy Game

Apocalypse Board Online, or ABO is a turn based strategy game. In ABO, you control a team of up to five units, that are either angels, or demons. You can choose when you log in whether to be an angel or a demon, and after you choose, there is no going back, so choose wisely. There are several different "tabs" at the top. These tabs can be used to access different parts of the game.

Tabs

These are the tabs that you can click on at the top of the screen.

1. This is the number of Blue Gems that you own. Blue gems can be acquired by either buying them (real cash) or by winning various contests that can usually be found at the forums.
2. This is the current amount of gold you have. You can get gold by: winning battles, joining a clan with territories, or selling units.
3. Nice and simple, this turns the sound on and off.
4. This is the pit, where you can start battles with people.
5. This is where you can organize your army. You can upgrade stats, pick which units you want to use, and pick where you want your units to start when you battle.
6. This is the alchemist, where you can sell gems you have won for gold.
7. This is the blacksmith, where you can turn gold and gems into orbs which can help you win battles.
8. This is the judge, where you can buy new units, and sell old ones.
9. This is the clanmaster, where you can join clans, donate to your clan, start your own clan (requires blue gems), or look at clan logs.
10. This is the Archmage, nobody knows what she will do yet, she will be updated in a future version.
11. This is the world map, where you can see territories, and which clan owns them, and how much they are worth.

The Pit

When you log in, you will enter the pit, a place with sets of pillars. In the pit you can talk to anyone in the same pit as you, and you can add people to your contacts list. I find I spend most of my time in the pit talking to friends, ti is quite the place to be. Click on a pillar to place your avatar on the pillar. If you click on a pillar that already has an avatar, or someone clicks on your pillar, you will enter a game.

The Game

Playing the Game

All of your units start on the back row opposite your opponent. In a game, the units all are played in order of speed. When it is your turn, a unit will start to "glow" and the squares around it will turn blue. You can move to any of the blue squares by clicking on it. Once your person moves, you will have the choice of doing a normal attack, a special attack, defending, or concentrating. If you concentrate, your next two attacks will be more powerful, if you defend, for the next two turns, attacks do less damage. The game ends when either one player surrenders, or one player has no units left. If you win a battle, you win some gold (about 500), and you have a chance at winning a gem which can be worth 1-2k.

The Game

Angels vs. Demons

At this point in the game, angels are stronger at lower levels, but as you gain levels, the demons slowly become stronger. This is because the demons have stronger expensive units that you need a lot of cash to buy, which usually comes with lots of levels. The angels however have stronger lower level units than the demons, so they overpower the demons at the lower levels.

Note: Do not pick either angels or demons simply because of this however, because the game is still under reconstruction, and may be changed in future updates.

Basic Strategy

When you are playing someone, it is important to get the first hits. Make it so that you aren't in range of their attacks, but they are in range of your attack, if at all possible. Also, never attack a magic unit with a magical attack, it does significantly less damage.

The Blacksmith

The blacksmith is where you can turn your hard earned gems (random chance to get one after each battle you win) and some cash into orbs. Orbs are something you can bring into battle with you, and can increase your chance to win. Orbs can range from increasing your movement, to randomly curing a unit up to three times every battle. Some orbs require blue gems to make, which can only be acquired through contests, and purchasing them with real money (see the Blue Gems section). I haven't actually used most of the orbs, so at this time I have no recommendation for which ones to get.

Note: You can only take three orbs into battle, so choose wisely!

The Judge

The judge is where you can buy new units. Before you buy a new unit, search for that unit, because a player might be selling a higher leveled version of that unit for very cheap. Because this game is intended for both french and english speaking players, some parts of the game can be a bit confusing. The judge is one of these things. So for all of us not from france, here is an explanation.

When you enter the judge, all the units in in level one will be shown, these are the worst picks in general. If you know what unit you want, there is a dropdown menu with the list of units your group (angels/demons) can buy. Next to the dropdown menu, are two boxes, the first box (one most to the left) says Niveau Min. and can help you narrow down your search, by searching for the level minimum that you are looking for. In general, you want to get as high a level as you can.

The Clanmaster

Clans are groups of people. The benefits of clans are:

  • Potential for gems/cash/new units

  • Able to talk to groups of people privately

  • Fun friendly competition between clans

The clans usually have an entrance fee that you have to pay to join, and not all clanmasters let other people into their clans, so be prepared for the potential to not be accepted. Clans are separated based on your group (angels/demons), so a demon can't join an angel clan, and vice-versa. The only reason someone wouldn't want to join a clan is that normally when you win a battle, you get about 500 gp, when you are in a clan, you get a little less, about 350 gp, but the gold you don't get goes to your clan bank which your clan master can only use to buy more territories, which is only more to your benefit.
