American Civil Liberties Union known as the ACLU

Ranked #16,199 in Culture & Society, #327,380 overall

WHO IS THE ACLU, REALLY?

ACLU. American Civil Liberties Union.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) consists of two separate non-profit organizations: the ACLU Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization which focuses on litigation and communication efforts, and the American Civil Liberties Union, a 501(c)(4) organization which focuses on legislative lobbying. The ACLU's stated mission is "to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States." It works through litigation, legislation, and community education.] Founded in 1920 by Crystal Eastman, Roger Baldwin and Walter Nelles,[ the ACLU was the successor organization to the earlier National Civil Liberties Bureau founded during World War I. The ACLU reported over 500,000 members at the end of 2005.
Lawsuits brought by the ACLU have been influential in the evolution of Constitutional law. The ACLU provides legal assistance in cases in which it considers civil liberties to be at risk. Even when the ACLU does not provide direct legal representation, it often submits amicus curiae briefs.
Outside of its legal work, the organization has also engaged in lobbying of elected officials and political activism. The ACLU has been critical of elected officials and policies of both Democrats and Republicans.

UPDATES - 2010 Los Angeles Times

September 11, 2010

The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit against the state of California on Friday for allowing school districts to charge students for books, uniforms, classes and other basic supplies.

The suit, filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, alleges that more than 30 districts require students and their families to pay for basic supplies that are supposed to be provided at no cost. Districts cited in the lawsuit include Beverly Hills, Burbank and Long Beach.

Nebraska Being Sued?

FREMONT, Neb. - The illegal immigration debate is extending beyond the border, as states and cities around the country begin pressing the issue -- even in America's heartland.

Like Arizona, one Nebraska town is now facing a lawsuit for its tough stance against illegal immigration.

Fremont, Neb., is a patriotic town near Omaha, where a large American flag graces the front of a downtown building. A marquee boldly reads, "God bless America. Thank you veterans." Homes proudly display the red, white, and blue.

And although the city is more than 1,000 miles from the Mexico border, it's also a key front in the battle over illegal immigration.

In Win for Rev. Falwell (and the ACLU), Judge Rules VA Must Allow Churches to Incorporate (4/17/2002)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

RICHMOND, VA--A federal judge has struck down a provision of the Virginia Constitution that bans religious organizations from incorporating, in a challenge filed by the Rev. Jerry Falwell and joined by the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia, the group announced today.

"The judge applied well established constitutional principles to reach the conclusion that Virginia's archaic ban on church incorporation cannot pass constitutional muster," said Rebecca Glenberg, Legal Director of the ACLU of Virginia.

The ACLU joined the lawsuit as a "friend of the court" last fall, challenging the ban on the grounds that it violates the U.S. Constitution's guarantee of free exercise of religion.

UPDATES ON THE ACLU

The ACLU is defending the North American Man Boy Love Association, saying that although the organization champions the criminal rape of children, it has a right to do that under free expression.

The ACLU endorses virtual child pornography and has defended the right of people to obtain real child porn.

The Nevada ACLU has declared its support for an individual's right to bear arms, apparently making it the first state affiliate in the nation to buck the national organization's position on the Second Amendment.

Lenscrafter's note: This is not normally the stance that ACLU takes on the Second Amendment and ownership of guns. See clip from June 4 Las Vegas Sun and the quote below about the ACLU's own statement posted on its site:

Vegas Sun: The New York City-based ACLU disagrees with the Supreme Court ruling, saying in a statement that it interprets the Second Amendment as a collective right to own guns and not an individual one.

"In our view, neither the possession of guns nor the regulation of guns raises a civil liberties issue," according to the position on its Web page.

ACORN AND THE ACLU?

The ACLU doesn't seem to be bothered by the illegal voter registration frauds across the country by ACORN or the obvious collusion of Ohio's Democrat Secretary of State, who had to be ordered by a judge to check for voter fraud!
The "concern" the ACLU shows is nothing but smoke and mirrors to take the heat off ACORN.....Acorn and the ACLU

AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION - At least this is what they call themselves!

Watching Out For Whom?

T

hey call themselves, "Guardians Of Freedom" defending and preserving individual rights. But whose rights? As I watch the cases they defend and the effect of the outcome those cases have on Americans, I must question, whose individual rights are they preserving?

Here is a statement from its founder, Roger Baldwin (agnostic and socialist).

"I am for socialism, disarmament, and ultimately for abolishing the state itself as an instrument of violence and compulsion. I seek social ownership of property, the abolition of the propertied class, and sole control of those who produce wealth. Communism is the goal."

One of the most reveiling aspects about this man is the unconventional marriage ceremony that vividly illustrated his (and the ACLU's future) contempt for the institution of marriage. Baldwin read to Doty (his wife):

To us who passionately cherish the vision of a free human society, the present institution of marriage amoung us is a grim mockery of essential freedom. Here we have the most intimate, most sacred, the most creative relationship shackled in the deadening grip of private property and essentially holding the woman subservient to the man...
We deny without reservation the moral right of state or church to bind by the force of law a relationship that cannot be maintained by the power of love alone. We submit to the form of law only because it seems a matter of too little importance to resist or ignore...
The highest relationship between a man and a woman is that which welcomes and understands each other's loves. Without a sense of possession there can be no exclusions, no jealousies. The creative life demands many friendships, many loves shared together openly, honestly, and joyously...[polyamory]*
My primary interest and joy is the great revolutionary struggle for human freedom today, so intense, so full of promise. I regard our union only as contributing to that cause, making us both serve it more passionately, the more devotedly.

Note: Later, as an elderly man, Baldwin dismissed these vows in an interview with Peggy Lamson as "pretentious and idealistic."

* [Polyamory is a form of open marriage, in which several individuals (male and female) can be married to each other and openly and indiscriminately engage in sexual relations with their multiple partners.]

ACLU - WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO.

Erosion of civil liberties? The ACLU is damaging our country.

"The American Civil Liberties Union is our nation's guardian of liberty, working daily in courts, legislatures and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties that the Constitution and laws of the United States guarantee everyone in this country". From Guardians of Freedom

"WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO
The ACLU is frequently asked to explain its defense of certain people or groups-particularly controversial and unpopular entities such as the American Nazis, the Ku Klux Klan, and the Nation of Islam. We do not defend them because we agree with them; rather, we defend their right to free expression and free assembly. Historically, the people whose opinions are the most controversial or extreme are the people whose rights are most often threatened. Once the government has the power to violate one person's rights, it can use that power against everyone. We work to stop the erosion of civil liberties before it's too late".

THE PEOPLE vs. THE ACLU

Hazelton: The People vs. the ACLU

Originally published 09:59 p.m., September 18, 2006, updated 12:00 a.m., September 19, 2006

Louis Barletta, mayor of Hazleton, Pa., has thrown down the gauntlet to those who think America belongs to anyone who can walk across the border. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and a Puerto Rican group have taken up the challenge. And the mayor has upped the ante by hiring as defense counsel the former head of immigration in the Justice Department.

Step One in this legal clash, likely to go to the U.S. Supreme Court, was a series of three ordinances passed in Hazleton. Propelled by several local crimes apparently committed by illegal aliens, and inspired by the mayor, the City Council decided to fine landlords who knowingly rent space to illegal aliens. It also decided to deny licenses to local businesses which knowingly hire such aliens. Lastly, it declared English would be the official language of the town.

Step Two is the federal suit filed by the ACLU against the town, claiming it was "unconstitutionally" seeking "to enforce immigration laws." Joining the ACLU in filing the case was the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund. This is an odd partner because legal residents of Puerto Rico are American citizens. Laws directed at illegal aliens don't apply to them.

Step Three in many ACLU challenges to local laws and actions often is capitulation by the local officials. Often when the ACLU files suit, sometimes when it only threatens to file suit, local officials cave to the pressure, and throw in the towel. This is due to the threat of budget-busting legal fees, both to defend the local decisions and to pay court-ordered fees to the ACLU.

In this case, Hazleton has not caved. Quite the contrary, it has girded its loins for battle. It has engaged as chief defense counsel, Kris W. Kobach, formerly Attorney General John Ashcroft's chief adviser on immigration law. Also, Mountain States Legal Foundation and the Federation for American Immigration Reform have volunteered staff and lawyers to defend the town's position.

What is the likely fate of the three ordinances? Easiest to predict is English as the official language. Several states have passed such laws. Legal challenges have been brought and decided. So long as the town's ordinances have the usual escape clauses for emergencies -- medical care, appearances in court, etc. -- this law will be found constitutional.

The ordinance on landlords should also be upheld. Though the ACLU claims the town is "enforcing immigration law," the law's effects are entirely within city limits. Regulating housing stock for the residents' health and safety has been a normal function of municipal government since the Middle Ages, in England.

The ordinance on business licenses should also be upheld. Again, the licensing of local businesses for the health and welfare of local residents has been a normal power of municipal governments for centuries.

Providing for the welfare of local citizens is the very essence of municipal government. The ACLU effort to replace government by the town council with government by an unelected judge is a direct attack on the civil rights of all citizens of Hazleton. The court which ultimately dismisses the ACLU attack on Hazleton should also award serious fees and costs against the ACLU and the Puerto Rican group in favor of the town and its beleaguered taxpayers.

What are the larger consequences of this legal war against Hazleton's ordinances? Hazleton has a population of only 30,000. Compared to America's more than 300 million residents, including an estimated 11 million illegal aliens, Hazleton is a drop in the bucket.

Many other towns have picked up on what Hazleton is doing. Some have introduced or passed similar laws. Others are interested, but hold back -- out of the ACLU line of fire until the Hazleton case has been won. More and more cities and states may adopt Hazleton-like laws. The crimes and public service costs of illegal aliens would then be concentrated more and more in cities and states that make themselves "sanctuaries" for illegal aliens.

This small case in a small town could have an enormous effect. It could generate from the grass roots, the pressure on Congress to deal with the problem of illegal aliens, rather than speak platitudes and duck the problem for another generation.

ACLU vs. America

Book: ACLU vs. America

As a result of the work of the American Civil Liberties Union and their war on America, we now live in a country where the church has been progressively silenced, parental authority has been undermined, children are less safe, and human life continues to be cheapened-both at birth and death. While the ACLU and its allies in the media have positioned themselves as the great defenders of freedom, they are in reality eliminating the freedoms of millions of Americans. Sadly, most Americans are unaware of the extreme positions of the ACLU.

Illegal Immigration

The ACLU demanded $2.3 million in fees for challenging a law against illegal immigration. This demand "illustrates the circus the ACLU brought to this case," the Mayor of Hazelton, Pennsylvania said. "They had 20 attorneys sitting in the courtroom at a time, 16 of them doing nothing but running up the bill."[1]

In the Hazleton case the ACLU persuaded a federal court to declare a municipal ordinance to be unconstitutional, even though other federal courts have upheld similar laws since then. The Hazleton case is on appeal.

Terrorism

The ACLU has challenged the authority of the President to authorize wireless wiretaps of overseas communications without submitting to judicial oversight. In ACLU v. NSA, the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit rejected the ACLU's challenge.

"The US Supreme Court refused without comment the ACLU's appeal of a lower court ruling that prevented them from suing over the government's warrantless TSP program. The problem was a Catch-22: they lack legal 'standing' to sue over it because they can't prove that they were suspected terrorists, but neither can they find out who was actually suspected, because this is a matter of national security."

The ACLU has been on a quest to rid America of its postings of the Ten Commandments from all public buildings, squares and parks. In Utah, the ACLU even announced a scavenger hunt with a prize for anyone who could find another Ten Commandments monument that the ACLU could persuade an activist judge to remove.

NOTE: These moments are worth a lot of money to the ACLU because federal law allows generous legal fees to be recovered for every Ten Commandments law suit the ACLU wins.

A new online petition asks Congress to change a specific civil-rights statute in hopes of preventing the American Civil Liberties Union from collecting attorney fees from taxpayers of local governments the organization takes to court.

The effort - spearheaded by Craig McCarthy of CourtZero.org, a site dedicated to stemming judicial activism - seeks to change 42 U.S.C., Section 1988, of the United States Code. The statute now allows judges to award attorney fees to plaintiffs in civil-rights cases brought against local governments, thereby putting the taxpayers on the hook and oftentimes funneling public money to the ACLU. McCarthy wants the law changed so cases involving the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment would not apply.

2004 Redlands and Los Angeles, California:

Under pressure from the ACLU, the city of Redlands, California, "voluntarily" changed its forty-year-old city seal to remove a cross and replace it with a tree. "We cannot afford to engage in a fight that we will lose," the mayor said. Encouraged by the Reldands capitulation, the ACLU is threatening to sue Los Angeles, California, because its official seal has a tiny cross on it, along with many other symbols. The most prominent feature in the seal is Pomona, the goddess of gardens and fruit trees, but the ACLU has no objection to her.

AMERICANS FOR TRUTH!

Peter LaBarbera, 46, is president of Americans For Truth (about Homosexuality, or AFTAH), a group dedicated to exposing the homosexual activist agenda. Founded as a part-time venture in 1996 but newly reorganized in August 2006, AFTAH seeks to apply the same single-minded determination to opposing the radical homosexual agenda and standing for God-ordained sexuality and the natural family as countless homosexual groups do in promoting their harmful agenda.

Americans For Truth is a rare single-issue national group on the other side of this critical "culture war" issue. Meanwhile, there are over a dozen national American "gay" groups with annual budgets ranging from just under $1 million to over $30 million working to advance this agenda - which threatens to criminalize Christian opposition to behavior that most Americans believe is wrong.

American Civil Responsibilities Union
The ACRU was established to help achieve a better balance between civil liberties and civil responsibilities. We favor the return of traditional morality and reasonable community standards. In criminal justice, where the "pro-defendant" ACLU promotes criminal rights, we support victims rights, overhauling of our antiquated criminal justice system, and insuring safe streets and safe neighborhoods for our citizens. We've been active in our support for capital punishment, and have challenged ACLU's "misplaced compassion" here. (It's limited implementation has been tokenism.) We oppose the exclusionary rule and favor changing certain archaic English Common Law principles and outmoded concepts. No one constitutional right is absolute, as each must be weighed against other rights.
The American Civil Rights Union
Civil rights are the fundamental liberties that all Americans should enjoy as a matter of basic morality, as well as Constitutional protection. Several organizations exist to protect one aspect or another of our civil rights and liberties. But the American Civil Rights Union (ACRU) is dedicated to protecting our fundamental rights and liberties across the board.

Mayflower Compact

Some say our country was not founded on Judeo-Christian belief. WRONG.

"In the name of God, Amen. We, whose names are underwritten, the Loyal Subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord, King James, by the Grace of God, of England, France and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, e&. Having undertaken for the Glory of God, and Advancement of the Christian Faith, and the Honour of our King and Country, a voyage to plant the first colony in the northern parts of Virginia; do by these presents, solemnly and mutually in the Presence of God and one of another, covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil Body Politick, for our better Ordering and Preservation, and Furtherance of the Ends aforesaid; And by Virtue hereof to enact, constitute, and frame, such just and equal Laws, Ordinances, Acts, Constitutions and Offices, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and convenient for the General good of the Colony; unto which we promise all due submission and obedience. In Witness whereof we have hereunto subscribed our names at Cape Cod the eleventh of November, in the Reign of our Sovereign Lord, King James of England, France and Ireland, the eighteenth, and of Scotland the fifty-fourth. Anno Domini, 1620."

NOTE: There followed the signatures of 41 of the 102 passengers, 37 of whom were Separatists fleeing religious persecution in Europe. This compact established the first basis in the new world for written laws. Half of the colony failed to survive the first winter, but the remainder lived on and prospered.

“Marxists believed dismantling the family was a necessary step in creating a classless society.”

THINK ABOUT IT!

Morality is not prejudice, and defending the time-tested Judeo-Christian sexual ethic is not "hate." (If you warn your children against doing something that is wrong and potentially harmful to their health, and which could alienate them from God, do you "hate" them?)

ROGER BALDWIN, FOUNDER OF THE ACLU

INTERESTING FACTS - The Truth About The ACLU

ANOTHER ARTICLE Revealing FACTS on the ACLU from its own writings

by Diane Dew

Ever notice how the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) seems to take on only cases that are anti-Christian - pro-sodomy, pro-abortion, anti-family, pro-pornography, pro-prostitution, pro-euthanasia, pro-homosexual, pro-infanticide, pro-crime, pro-humanism, anti-God -- and, except for atheism, anti-religion?

It calls itself the American Civil Liberties Union, but the ACLU is not American; it is uncivil (to the unborn, which are shredded mercilessly to pieces without anesthetic); and it knows nothing of true liberty, which can only be found in Jesus Christ, when one is set free from the bondage of all the SIN this evil organization PROMOTES!

The ACLU's founder, Roger Baldwin, stated: "We are for SOCIALISM, disarmament, and ultimately for abolishing the state itself... We seek the social ownership of property, the abolition of the propertied class, and the SOLE CONTROL of those who produce wealth. COMMUNISM is the goal." (Source: Trial and Error, by Geo. Grant)

The ACLU is destructive to the fabric of our society. Christians must recognize Satan as the source - the instigator - when the end results of an organization's efforts are only "to kill, to steal, and to destroy." All we need to is examine the (rotten) fruit.

Following are some of the stated goals of the ACLU, from its own published Policy Issues:

the legalization of prostitution (Policy 211);

the defense of all pornography, including CHILD PORN, as "free speech" (Policy 4);

the decriminalization and legalization of all drugs (Policy 210);

the promotion of homosexuality (Policy 264);

the opposition of rating of music and movies (Policy 18);

opposition against parental consent of minors seeking abortion (Policy 262);

opposition of informed consent preceding abortion procedures (Policy 263);

opposition of spousal consent preceding abortion (Policy 262);

opposition of parental choice in children's education (Policy 80)

-- not to mention the defense and promotion of euthanasia, polygamy, government control of church institutions, gun control, tax-funded abortion, birth limitation, etc. (Policies 263, 133, 402, 47, 261, 323, 271, 91, 85).

Following is a case in point (from David Barton's "America: To Pray or Not to Pray").

In 1988, California was considering adopting legislation on sex education for public schools requiring that course material and
instruction should stress that monogamous heterosexual intercourse within marriage is a traditional American value.

The Senator promoting the bill received a letter of protest from the ACLU dated April 18, 1988 stating:

"It is our position that monogamous, heterosexual intercourse within marriage
as a traditional American value is an unconstitutional establishment of religious
doctrine in public schools.... We believe [this bill] violates the First Amendment."

Truth is, liberals are unwilling to simply let others be, but rather seek to impose their UNgodliness upon Christians. It is a mission to
them and other atheists to pervert the freedoms of others. The ACLU does not run to the defense of those who are harmed; it aggressively
seeks out opportunities to corrupt pure freedoms.

Finances

How does the ACLU pay for its activities?

George Grant, author of "Trial and Error," puts the ACLU's annual budget (1993) at $14 MILLION (FOURTEEN MILLION DOLLARS) - much of which is "SUPPLIED BY THE AMERICAN TAXPAYER through the Federal program mandated by the Civil Rights Attorneys' Fee Awards Act of 1976. If the ACLU wins a case that involves a public institution, for instance, the organization collects the full legal fees of its attorneys even though those attorneys offered their services pro bono (without charge).

Membership

1993 membership in the ACLU was 250,000 members, with 70 staff lawyers, and 5,000 volunteer attorneys, handling an average of 6,000 cases at any one time.

You can read about the ACLU at the ACLU's official web site: http://aclu.org/

OUR FREEDOM....DOES THE FLAG STILL WAVE?

Quoting from the "The Star-Spangled Banner"

Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Does it still wave "O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?"
