Music I Discovered on Austin City Limits

Live Music is Best...

...but if you can't have that, then "recorded live" is almost as good.

There are several different ways I use to find new music. One of my favorites is Austin City Limits, a concert show on PBS.

My criteria for including a band or artist on this lens is that I was impressed with the broadcast and that I had never heard the music before then (though I might have heard of the artist). I'll be leaving out some great performances by people I have heard of that way, but maybe I'll make another lens about those....

Full disclosure: Other than seeing the show, I don't know much about any of these artists. I've visited every website I cite in the articles, and watched each video, but unless otherwise stated I have not (yet) purchased any of the albums in the shopping links--so I can't actually recommend them individually.

What is Austin City Limits?

Austin City Limits (ACL) is American television's longest-running concert music program. It's produced by KLRU on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin, for broadcast on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS).

The offical website can be found at this link, and the Wikipedia article is here.

Manu Chao

Born in Paris of Galician/Basque parentage, Manu Chao has become one of the most popular performers in the world (outside the USA, at least). He plays a true World Music, mixing strong threads of salsa, son and other Latin forms with elements of French chanson, Algerian rai, reggae and punk (at times during the ACL show, the band sounded eerily like the Clash). He sings primarily in Spanish, French and English, but sometimes other languages.

His official website is here, the Wikipedia article is here, and there's a MySpace Music page here.

Arcade Fire

Arcade Fire is an indie rock band based in Montreal, Canada. Their instrumentation often goes beyond the basics, including violin, viola,, piano, various brass instruments, and others. There's some very unusual percussion in the first video below....

Though not the main focus, there is a detectable strain of Celtic influence in their music.

The official website is here. Note that while it's gorgeous, the navigation isn't always obvious--you may have to wave your mouse around and see where it turns into a pointing finger. There's a Wikipedia article here, and an official MySpace page here.

Café Tacuba

Café Tacuba (often stylized as CAFÉ TACVBA) is from Naucalpan, Mexico. Usually characterized as "Rock en Español", their music contains strong influences from native Mexican folk music, punk and electronica, among others.

Their official website is here--note that, like their songs, it's entirely in Spanish. The Wikipedia article is here, and there's a MySpace Music page here.

KT Tunstall

KT Tunstall is a Scottish singer-songwriter. Based on the ACL appearance and the videos below, her music seems to fall at the pop-ish end of folk-rock. She's got real grit in her voice when she wants it, but a clear low soprano/high alto comes out as well.

She got her American break when Katharine McPhee chose to cover her song "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" on American Idol.

Carolyn Wonderland

This chick is HOT... on guitar (I'll now apologize for the phrasing, but it was too good to pass up). There aren't many women in blues that are known primarily as instrumentalist rather than singers--Bonnie Raitt, Susan Tedeschi and Rory Block are the only ones who come to mind right away--but Carolyn Wonderland deserves to join their company.

The Texas native, currently based in Austin, plays guitar, mandolin, lap steel, piano and trumpet, as well as being a fine vocalist and songwriter. She has won multiple awards, mostly local and none, as yet, specifically as an instrumentalist.

Her official home page is here, the Wikipedia article is here, her MySpace Music page is here and there's a FaceBook fan page here

Carrie Rodriguez

Carrie Rodriguez is a classically trained violinist who has taken her music in a singer-songwriter direction. In addition to fiddle, she also plays tenor guitar and mandobird (an electric mandolin--I assume she also plays a regular mandolin...). She was "discovered" by Chip Taylor (who wrote "Wild Thing" and "Angel of the Morning"), and played with him before going solo. She has also toured with John Prine.

Her official website is here, the Wikipedia article is here, and her MySpace Music page is here

Amazon links below include duo albums that may be credited to Chip Taylor alone (in the link...).

This is a fantastic lens about a fantastic show - I've discovered a few favorites on Austin City Limits, as well, and have seen folks that I already loved jam as well.

I had the great pleasure to sit in the audience of one show, many years ago: a Nashville songwriter's showcase featuring Harlan Howard and Don Schlitz.
5*s and Hooray for my home town Austin! :-)
