ADD and ADHD

Attention deficit disorder (ADD), or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), is the fastest growing childhood disorder in the United States.  It is reported that approximately 9-10 percent of school aged children have this condition.  In the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV), the American Psychiatric Association lists three different categories of ADHD-ADHD inattentive, ADHD hyperactive-impulsive, and a third category which is a combination of the two.  To keep things simple, the broader term ADD will be used here to describe the condition.

    Factors Linked To ADD/ADHD

Over the past 5-10 years, more emphasis has been placed on the role of diet in the development of ADD. Many how have the symptoms of ADD are really just having reactions to sugar, wheat, gluten, preservatives, dyes and salicylates in food. These foods and additives can throw off the chemistry of the brain and nervous system.

Other factors that may lead to the development of ADD are heredity, anxiety, allergies, smoking during pregnancy, oxygen deprivation at birth, food additives, food allergies, heavy metal poisoning and environmental toxins.

Is ADD and ADHD Over Diagnosed?

With such a large increase in the amount of recently diagnosed cases of ADD and ADHD, many experts and researchers feel that the condition is being over diagnosed. One reason it can be diagnosed incorrectly is that normal, healthy children can demonstrate many of these symptoms during childhood. One study found that over 60% of parents suspect that their child has ADD or ADHD at some point as their kids grow up.

Another reason for ADD behavior can be food allergies. Once the allergen is removed, behavior improves. Many have found alternative naturopath doctors or kinesiologists to be affective in identifying food allergies.
