Don't Know Much About Autism, Do You?

And for me this is very true. I became truly passionate about doing a lens on autism especially after coming across David J Wilde's book "Raised in Hell". He tells of his experience of undiagnosed autism compounded with abuse. You can download a free copy in the "Raised in Hell" module on this lens. I've did a bit more research on autism and I found that there are five types of autism: 1) Classic Autism; 2) Asperger Syndrome; 3) Children Disintegrative Disorder; 4) Rett Syndrome; and 5) Persuasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified. You can learn more of these different types visit The Five Types of Autism. Another article that I came across that I thought was interesting was this one on Asperger Asperger's Syndrome.

So with reading my downloaded copy of the book and researching all that I could about autism, I came across some useful information on April is National Autism Awareness Month; Walk Now For Autism; information from Autism Speaks; and books relating to autism. I also provide links to Learn About Autism, The Film Sensory Awareness Program, An Autism Fundraising Event, The AutismLink Store, ASA Online Art Exhibit as well as Support Autism by Donating. I hope this information is helpful to anyone wishing to learn more about autism especially those affected directly or indirectly by autism.

My Autistic Sister (Poem)

Around 2004, then, 10-year-old Deirdre O'Donnell penned a poem in honor of her autistic sister Caitlin. At the time she wrote it, Deirdre did not know that she herself had Asperger's Syndrome, a form of autism that affects social skills.

Autism silences your beautiful voice
From telling me what you are feeling
What causes you to laugh
When I don't get the joke
To the tears you shed
When I don't know your pain
Or your favorite song and
When you hug me when you
Fear the thunderstorms
Not knowing what torments you so often
Keeps me from comforting you.
Although autism silences your voice
I see love in your gleaming smile.
Even though I don't get your joke
I find myself laughing myself to tears
Just to see joy emblazoned on your face.
You are my sister
And that is what defines you
Not AUTISM.
