ADHD Behavioural Therapy

Have You Thought About ADHD Behaviour Therapy?

Dr. Gregory Fabiano, a researcher on ADHD, got the White House's Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the nation's highest honor for professionals, His co-author of the study is William Pelham , a distinguished scholar in child psychology. Their work has been published in the March issue of Clinical Psychiology Review which is an anlaysis of over 170 studies carried out at the University of Buffalo.

Basically his work shows that ADHD Behavior Therapy works as well, if not better , than any drugs for ADHD !

That means that when parents know how to react when kids behave well and also when they don't, this is just as effective and sometimes more effective than any ADHD medication!

Many parents are now turning to ADHD behaviour therapy and indeed all the Pediatric and ADHD support groups are advocating not just medication and diet but psychological intervention will be an essential part of the ADHD treatment portfolio. Behavioural therapy is high in the list and many parents can now cope by learning a few practical techniques.

ADHD Diet ?

5 Simple Strategies

If you are worried about how diet affects your ADHD child and cannot cope with the idea of cooking wonderful wholesome meals, here are a few simple strategies for you to change ALL the family's diet for the better. These have been shown by the so-called 'experts' to have a more than beneficial effect on ADHD children and have definitly alleviated their symptoms.

1. Forget Feingold diet and other elimination diets. There are too many restrictions in the first and there is too much difficulty in the second! Feingold does not allow fruit which I and lots of nutritionists disagree with, so the first strategy is to pile up on fruits and vegetables in whatever form you like. Smoothies, soups, and whatever!

2. Get rid of all the processed food which is full of additives, colourings and pesticides and all sorts of toxins. There is enough evidence out there, believe me, which says that this rubbish ruins concentration and hypes up kids so that they are hyperactive. That means going organic when you can but without making it a big deal. Most diets for attention deficit disorder make a big deal of this and say you have to bake your own bread!

Learn From Other Parents

Your ADHD Child Can Be Successful Too !

Are attention and hyperactivity problems making it hard for your child to succeed in school? Is your child angry, frustrated and acting out because he can't learn and focus the way other kids do?

Listen to a child psychologist, Dr. Robert Myers who has worked with ADHD children for 25 years.

" I also raised a son with ADHD. My son, Greg, was diagnosed at age 10. I understand how painful it is to watch your child struggle with attention and hyperactivity problems and fall behind in school because it happened to my son. I also know that kids with ADHD are bright, creative and highly talented. And with the right training and support, these children can succeed and excel in school and in life."

Five Undeniable Facts About ADHD

Get The Facts !

First Fact:- ADHD is increasing rapidly. Just look at the figures for Holland- they have reported a 25% increase in cases in the last six months ! Similar spikes in USA.

Second Fact :- ADHD drugs such as Ritalin, Adderall, Strattera and Concerta do NOT cure ADHD. They CAN help to relieve some symptoms but read on ....

Third Fact :- The above ADHD drugs DO have a wide range of side effects. The list is long and alrming to say the least !

Fourth Fact :- The bad news is that those children who took psychostimulant drugs as kids for ADHD have a much higher chance of ending up as drug users in adult life.

Fifth Fact:- These ADHD medications DO help children to stay calmer but unfortunately they will NOT teach your child self-management skills which is what ADHD is all about !

Homeopathy And ADHD

Questions Parents Ask

How Do These Homeopathic Medicines Work?

They are not cures but rather work as a balancing force so that mind and body can work together in harmony and in the case of ADHD, they will help to calm the child and reduce hyperactivity while also increasing attention span. There is no cure as such for ADHD but many symptoms can be relieved.

How Can I Tell A Reputable Supplier From A Charlatan?
Good question and perhaps the most important one! Some homeopathic substances are poisonous if they are not processed properly. You will need to find a reputable company which has been in existence for many years and can back its products with a guarantee. The company below offers a guarantee of one year. Furthermore you will want to know how and where the substances are manufactured and to what standards. You may want to know if it is a recognised facility (ie by the FDA) and whether they actually have qualified homeopaths working for them.

8 Scary Facts About ADHD Medication

Read These Facts and Wise Up !

1.The Director of the International Center for the Study of Psychiatry and Psychlogy was recently quoted as saying that he routinely sees NORMAL children on up to five psychiatric drugs!

2.Millions of dollars are spent on ADHD conventional medications and it is an enormous business for many drug companies, despite the FDA warnings which seem to pop up every month.Federal drug experts have just issued the umpteenth warning about the over prescription of these drugs for children and they use the words 'substantial risks'! Just to name a few :-possible heart problems, blood pressure, drug dependency, suppression of appetite, insomnia etc.

3.If you have just seen the price tag on prescription medication for ADHD such as Ritalin, Risperdal or Concerta, then you may start having legitimate doubts about whether this is really the way to treat ADHD. I know a student who has to fork out $150 a month just to pay for his Vyvanse ADHD
medication !

4.Conventional ADHD medications tend to suppress a child's appetite. If I were in this situation, I would be so worried about supplementing my child's diet and worrying about the correct amount of protein, vitamins and minerals that I would become crazy myself!

5. Ignore ADHD in children is just as risky - the child has a 1.5 times higher risk of being overweight or obese when compared to children who were not suffering from attention deficit disorder.

6.In just ten years the prescriptions for the most widely used drug (Ritalin) for ADHD children in the UK has risen from 4,000 to 360,000! This represents an enormous cost to the the National Health Service to the tune of 28 million.

7. There are other risks in letting ADHD go untreated:- children are at risk of dropping out at school, have sex at a very early age (very often unprotected with all the problems which that brings), be involved in road accidents and maybe start taking drugs.

8. Did you know that Adderall (its main component is Dextroamphetamine) is called 'dexies' in the high school parking lot and fetches quite a good price for teenagers selling it! That is why it is definitely not a good idea for teenagers and older children. There is a risk of becoming addicted to Adderall, other drug abuse, risk of impaired judgement when doing sports and loss of weight.

A Scary Story .......

From The ADHD Blogs

How about this for a scary post on an ADHD blog recently? A mother reports that her daughter had been given Ritalin for ADHD and as a result, got tics. She was then put on Clonidine for ADHD which worked fine for the tics. Now, the scary part is that IF she had been given both Ritalin and Clonidine, then she was at enormous risk as there have been deaths caused by this deadly combination. There have been up to four deaths reported - all four did have heart problems but should never have been given this combination. The only 'good' thing about Clonidine is that it does seem to help kids with sleep problems caused by the ADHD drugs.

The Unknown Factor ??

Clinical Trials Results Not Published !

The most alarming problem with psychostimulants in my view is the 'unknown factor'. There are no studies at all on the long term psychological effects on the child, not to mention the physical side effects. There is a wall of ignorance set up by the drug companies in hiding the truth about these highly hyped drugs and their failure in clinical trials. Silence is golden !

Looking At Natural Remedies

There Must Be A Safer Way !

Well, there is but again you have to tread with caution. There are lots of so-called natural supplements on the market nowadays- all telling you that they have no side effects at all and that they are a an alternative remedy for ADHD. The list is endless- from magnesium, zinc, gingko biloba, melatonin and so on. The problem here is that if you buy these from any old website, you may run the risk of doing your child as much harm as if you were giving him or her the psychostimulants above. You do not know how much of the actual ingredient is in the capsules - you do not even know how pure it is and you have no idea of where it comes from! Children with existing neurological disorders could be at risk from seizures if they are given high doses of melatonin and there are some risks from Gingko if taken in massive doses.

Where To Look And What To Look For

Natural Remedies Are A Safe and Valid Option

Natural ADHD medicine sometimes consists in dosing children with vitamins and minerals which will give them a balanced nutritional diet. Obviously, this has to be approached with caution as certain supplements in massive doses could be damaging for a child's health. I often hear parents say that if is natural, well, it cannot have any side effects. This is only true if the correct dosage is given and indeed if the supplements themselves are manufactured according to the highest standards.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR:-

1. Is there any guarantee that the product will work and if not, can you have your money back? The link below this article is for a company that has a one year guarantee ! This immediately inspires confidence.

2. Is there any recognition by the FDA that this company is a registered one with them (the FDA of course will not guarantee the actual products). If it is approved by the FDA, then that means that the herbs or ingredients are guaranteed to come from safe and unpolluted fields and that processing is subject to international regulations.

3. They should also have GMP accreditation.

Another factor is COST ! Natural/homeopathic medicines are a fraction of the cost of conventional psychostimulants !

Why not install a simple piece of software on the computer so you know exactly what your child is viewing and the messages he or she is exchanging.

There are just too many peer pressures and other dangers lurking in cyberspace for you to give them unsupervised access to the net - but it happens.

I have three children who had at one time all been diagnosed with having ADHD. I really appreciate your lens and the contents in it. I have tried a natural approach to the prescription drugs as well. I gave my middle child St.Johns Warts one summer instead of the prescrition drug and it worked just as well. And he still had a great appitite. There is a lot of usefull info on your lens. THANKS..

I share your distrust of prescription drugs for ADHD and many other chronic disorders. Modern western medicine is great at treating physical trauma, not so great at chronic diseases. We just don't know enough about the long-term effects of many medications for psychiactric illnesses.
