Diagnosed ADHD/OCD/PTSD Sufferer Here. I could go into the long version from my experience, but I will just say I have discovered for myself to accept that I'm human which has cleared me of most acronyms for the most part. ADHD may exist, but the choice to suffer from it or grow up and learn to accept being human and unique seems to be my way of coping. Healing for me meant acceptance of pain and willing to make an effort and as long as I am true to myself (remaining aware) I can overcome any form of diagnosis. My daughter supposedly also has it, but I choose to see her as a child with spirit that just requires love, consistency, routine, and follow through. Kids these days seem to want ADHD... like its a trend or something... and she knows how to act accordingly. Like wanting glasses or braces or being sick to avoid something. She thinks its funny and cute when she forgets important things at school and downplays her grades falling. If there's any issue, it's the overdiagnosis and pressure put on children to grow up too fast, and when they don't succumb to it the teacher/parent wants to label them. As parents AND teachers we are responsible for coaching kids to be who they are but have balance. They aren't all little robots just as we weren't. But regardless, I suppose in the bigger picture we are all survivors of something and I'm sure it all works out the way nature intends. If we stop trying to LABEL and start working on the core issue, amazing things can happen.

Thanks for the insightful comment and for stopping by. I agree that we someti es expect far too much from our children and there is a lot of pressure on them. You are also right about the unhealthy passion we have for labelling.
  • themeanviolets Apr 8, 2012 @ 11:45 am | delete
and forgive me for not mentioning that your lens was a joy to read. A great resource nonetheless! Labels are a reality. People need and cherish them. If they could only not stop there and keep seeking out past the potentially harmful medications and become aware that alternative solutions do exist, wow wouldn't that be something. But reality is we get lazy... how we love our sweet misery. HAHA :-) I stopped taking my meds a year ago, however and I'm SO glad I did.

Man I like your lens a lot, but I just happen to have ADD, and trying to read your whole lens kinda gave me a headache. It would be nice if you could have one summary paragraph, anyway I cope with it by looking at the positives of it, like if it's something I like a lot, I can focus on that for long periods of time. People with ADD also have a different way of looking at the world, and we share a link with others with ADD. I don't take medication for my ADD, the best thing to do to cope with it, would be to have notes, a lot of notes, everywhere. Help you remember and not get distracted by things. Oh, by the way, I happen to be in high school, if that matters at all, good lens!
  • colbor Apr 8, 2012 @ 10:25 am | delete
Glad you stopped by Revenge. That is a very interesting point you make and yes, I should have made the lens a bit more ADHD friendly! Will remember for the next lens I write!

Thank you for sharing this lens. We've already had one teacher parent meeting regarding our son's behavior and she's now requested another. We took him to the dr today for the first consult, and are waiting for an appointment for tests. In the meantime though, we have been at the end of our rope with him, and even we can't wait for all these doctors appointments, tests, results, etc. We had to do something today, so I googled and found your lens. I have a list of foods and vitamins & minerals now, thanks to your eza article, that I'm going to go out and get immediately. Thank you so much. Anything that will help my little boy will bring all of us so much relief. We feel so bad because he is always in trouble. We're constantly telling him to sit still, to stop yammering incessantly, to pay attention... it's like all we ever do is tell him no and it's heartbreaking. I really hope these natural remedies help. I'll stop back by to let you know how we fare with them after a week or so.
  • colbor Mar 16, 2012 @ 4:36 pm | delete
Thanks for letting me know this and I do hope the foods/vitamins will help although it may take time. In any case do drop by when you can and let me know how things are going. I really hope this works for you.
    Best,
    Robert

Glad you stopped by. I may do some articles on ADHD and Chiropractic so will ask your advice on that, when I do.

Great info. I believe, a lot of behavioral problems are related with food, especially levels of sugar in blood, and stress of course. Aggressive media (TV, computers, non stop noise) is partly responsible too.

I have a 25 year old daughter who has been suffering from ADHD all her life. We have tried psychologists, psychiatrists, drugs. diet. Nothing seems to work. She dropped out of high school, got her GED, has not finished college, is immature, non motivated, does nothing but complain.
  • colbor Jan 22, 2012 @ 1:07 am | delete
That must be very difficult and frustrating for you, sarahrk.

A great amount of under-reported info on ADHD here. Great informative lens, please keep updating.
  • colbor Oct 20, 2011 @ 4:27 pm | delete
Thanks Yardbird. Unfortunately, every time I try to update this lens, I get the message that it is not in line with Squidoo policy - it is supposedly too promotional, etc. etc. It seems that even if you write a great lens and put an awful lot of work into it,it is still not enough for Squidoo. Pity!

I'm so glad you have this informative lens. As a psychiatry resident, I felt horrible for the overmedicated ADHD kids. Thank you.

ADHD is tough to deal with. Just doing things and getting them done is tough. Finishing them is tough. Explain ADHD to someone else, forget it. Unless you have a broken leg and can point to it and say here, this is why I can't walk, an explanation for ADHD is not going to work. It's not something you can see, so if your labelled with it, well then you are just taking advantage of it!

The best way to cope is to develop self taught strategies that help you get by. Everyone has their own severity of ADHD and all coping strategies will be different.

Excellent lens, I agree totally. I have made a lens about an Israeli natural treatment called Rikuzit.

Drugs are not the answer...there is a pill for every made up disorder out there, and yet we're getting more sick and having more problems. Huge correlation, among other lifestyle decisions. Thanks for the post

I have three children who had at one time all been diagnosed with having ADHD. I really appreciate your lens and the contents in it. I have tried a natural approach to the prescription drugs as well. I gave my middle child St.Johns Warts one summer instead of the prescrition drug and it worked just as well. And he still had a great appitite. There is a lot of usefull info on your lens. THANKS..
  • Yardbird Feb 11, 2009 @ 9:04 pm | delete
I share your distrust of prescription drugs for ADHD and many other chronic disorders. Modern western medicine is great at treating physical trauma, not so great at chronic diseases. We just don't know enough about the long-term effects of many medications for psychiactric illnesses.
