The million dollar question, which has been asked about AIDS for the past few decades has been the usual "is there a cure for AIDS yet?" Sadly, the answer is still NO. This virus has proved too hardy and clever (as of now, at least!). But some real serious research is going on since two decades. The present generation of retroviral drugs are effective to a certain extent. Will there be a vaccine in the future? Maybe!! Watch this space!!
The Importance of an AIDS vaccine
The importance of developing an AIDS vaccine can be summarized in one sentence. IT IS THE ONLY WAY TO END THE AIDS PANDEMIC. This is what is spurring scientists across the world in thier quest for an efective vaccine. Two studies have documented that immunization with polyvalent simian immunodeficiency virus vaccines(SIV macaque models) can induce sustained control of HIV viremia, but further research is needed.
The most effective vaccine would be both prophylactic and theraupetic, i.e., both preventive and curative. The general consensus amongst most scientists is that at least a preventive vacccine is within the realms of possibility.
However, a phase IIb HIV/AIDS vaccine study, referred to as PAVE 100, has been postponed by the NIH (The National Institutes of Health), citing a lack of focused research. There have also been reports that some who received the vaccine contracted the actual virus accidentally.
