Love Letters To Sarah
The Illness
The day George Sanders fell ill was the same day his wife gave birth to their first child. A beautiful baby girl. George and Sarah had decided to call her Joellen, after Sarah's mother. It would be a long time before George was able to lay eyes on her. He had exhibited flu like symptoms, but in all honesty, his doctor couldn't figure out what was wrong with him.
The doctor played it safe, just to be sure. The day Sarah brought the baby home, he advised her to pack a few things and stay at her mother's for a while. A precaution, just until George's condition improved.
"Whatever it is, it could very well be contagious", he explained, "but to tell you the truth, Sarah, I haven't got the foggiest idea what it is."
The doctor was kind enough to arrange a nurse to care for George in his wife's absence. She looked after him for several weeks before he was well enough to get up and move around. George felt as though Mildred's departure was as swift as her arrival, but nonetheless, he was excited by the prospect of being reunited with his wife.
The Letters
George wrote his wife, then waited patiently on the porch of his home and gave the letter to the postman.
He hadn't expected there would be a response for the first few days, but as time passed, he grew ever more concerned. George couldn't help but worry, and so he wrote his wife another letter. Again he waited for a response, but just the same, he got none.
George considered the possibility that something may have happened to Sarah, but pushed it out of mind and wrote another. This time he told her how very much he loved her, how worried he was, and begged her to send word.
He decided the only way was to write a string of letters conveying his love and have them hand delivered to her wherever she was. He asked the postman to oblige him this favor, to which the man agreed. He studied the envelope and smiled encouragingly.
"I know just where this is, George. I'll see it is delivered personally. No need to worry."
The postman shrank into the distance, George gazing longingly after him and praying a short prayer.
The Postman Cometh
George mustered his strength and rushed as he might to meet the man halfway. The postman offered the package, George was so happy to receive. He tore it open and retrieved the contents. A single photograph.
It was a photograph of Sarah and Joellen, the two most beautiful women he'd ever seen. The child was perfect, as perfect as George had ever imagined. He admired the girls for quite some time before the euphoria faded.
"But I don't understand. There isn't even a letter."
"It's all I was given", the postman sympathized.
"Wait here, will you please", George requested.
"As long as you like, George."
George was gone only a short while before he returned with a letter, again asking the postman to deliver.
"You can count on me, George."
And so the postman disappeared again, as well, George prayed again.
A Ray Of Light
George limped down the drive, was all he could manage, and retrieved the letter. He opened it and was pleased to see a length of text. It was only a short thread, but made his heart beat faster nevertheless.
George examined it, reading as fast as he could. When he had finished, a single tear rolled down his cheek. His eyes met with the postman's, who gently smiled a very friendly smile.
"Can I write her one more time?"
"If you wish, George."
George returned to his house and took it all in. He remembered every good time and bad and smiled before he cried. He wrote his wife one last love letter and sealed it with his tears. He handed it to the postman sadly, choking on his fate. His eyes begged the postman for a guarantee. The postman happily obliged.
"Swear to me she'll get this, wont you?"
"You have my word as an angel of heaven, George. It will be done."
At that, the postman was off, and in his place a ray of light, kindly beckoning George toward his final resting place.
