A Step by Step Instruction in Cleaning Your Shag Rug

A spillage on a rug can really cause mayhem inside a home.

You might have taken quite a long time and lots of effort in looking for that perfect rug, but it is simply inevitable that sooner or later something will spill on your rug. If it is a shag rug that you have, then it is more unfortunate. You do not have to worry anymore now. Listed below are just some instructions on how to clean up that spill.

Aside from your patience, you would also need some materials. You need to have water, white vinegar, laundry soap, laundry pre-treater, baking soda, scrubbing brush, paper towel and a hair dryer.

It is important to have a carpet steamer or a wet/dry vac if you have a shag rug. However, if you have spent all your money in buying that sought-after rug and you are left with nothing, then just get the materials listed above and follow the steps listed below.

Step One: Immediate Response

Cleaning is an icky task so you do not expect to clean the dirt with a machine. You have to manually clean the spillage with your two hands first. Protecting your hands with gloves is a very good idea especially if the spill is really gross. Solid objects need to be removed first. Then, start taking care of the spill itself. Soak up the spill with a paper towel. Also make sure that you wipe the part under the rug clean as liquids easily seep through.

Step Two: Cleaning the Real Spill

Get to the center of the spill and splash baking soda onto it. Starting from the center, slowly sprinkle baking up to the edges of the spill until you will be able to cover the whole area. Just leave it this way for the whole night, which will test your patience.

Then after an overnight wait, mix two tablespoons of powdered laundry soap into a pail of water until you get a nice texture of suds. Then you can add some white vinegar, preferably several drops. Just dip the scrubbing brush and off you go to the real job.

Scrub the rug in circular motions. The harder you scrub, the better the results will be. Do not worry as your shag rug will be able to handle such hard stress. You can then use a 1 to soak up the soapy water.

After doing it, again wipe the part underneath the rug for the soap water you have used might have seeped through. Use the hair dryer to dry the rug.
