Valentine's Day Gifts

2002 was a big year for me. It was my junior year in high school, the year of my first boyfriend, my first date, my first kiss...you get the idea. My boyfriend at the time, Danny, and I had been dating for six months when Valentine's Day reared its ugly head.


Valentine's Day in high school is pure hell. Not only do they deliver "Flowergrams" to your classrooms, so the most popular guys and girls end up with their arms full of wilting pink and white carnations, but there's also an unspoken competition among the girls to see whose boyfriend spoils them the most on this holiday.


I was confident that Danny would take this duty seriously, especially considering that our 6-month anniversary happened to fall on the same day as Valentine's Day. Likewise, I made sure to order him a bunch of Flowergrams, as well as give him a number of gifts throughout the day (a gift card, a stuffed animal, some stupid video game stuff he was into, etc.).


In my first class, I received a number of Flowergrams, but none from Danny, just some from friends and teachers. So I figured that maybe I'd get something when I saw him at lunch. I mean, he knew I was going on a field trip right after lunch, and that we weren't going to see each other the rest of the day, so he'd do something...right?


We met up with our friends in the cafeteria, and I pretended like everything was normal. I bought my lunch (a bagel and cream cheese, the only two items our cafeteria served that didn't make me want to gag myself with a spoon), sat next to Danny, and waited. And waited. And waited. Nothing. The bell rang 50 minutes later, alerting us that we had 5 minutes to get our butts wherever they needed to be...and Danny simply waved goodbye and walked away.


As I made my way towards the buses for my field trip to some nearby nature sanctuary, the tears started welling up in my eyes. Stop it, I told myself. So he forgot...big deal. It's not the end of the world. Don't cry, don't cry, don't cry...


"Jess! Hey, Jess!" I heard someone yell my name from somewhere behind me. I turned and saw Danny making his way through the horde of students crammed in the hallway. "I forgot to give you this!"


He placed something small in my hand, and then turned around and disappeared back into the crowd. I looked down to see what he had given me.


Oh no. You have got to be kidding me...


In my hand was a straw. Well, a straw that was folded into a star, but still...a straw.


I climbed the stairs to my assigned bus and sat down, tears running down my face. I examined the "gift" that Danny had given me for a few moments, then shoved it into my pocket and tried to forget that it was Valentine's Day and our anniversary.


I know, it's the thought that counts, but a straw that he folded into a star right before seeing me doesn't really cut it. He probably used that straw at lunch, now that I think about it...how gross is that? "Gee, thanks Danny, I really wanted your spit and food particles trapped in this star-straw, how romantic!"


So guys, a bit of advice: this Valentine's Day, do what you have to do to make her feel special...and stay away from plastic drinking straws!
