Aromatherapy Oils

The first people to use aromatherapy oils were Egyptians and Chinese. The Egyptians coined the phrase "parfum/perfume" which in translation means "through the smoke". Do be aware that Perfume Oils are NOT the same as Essential Oils. Perfume oils lack the therapeutic benefits that essential oils have.

Essential means the "essence of the plant"

Our skin produces sebum, which is oil produced through our glands. Essential oils can absorb through theseĀ  oils and glands and can cause different effects based on the type of essential aromatherapy oils you're using.

Aromatherapy Oils and Notes

There is a portion of your brain called the limbic portion. This part of your brain records every scent you've ever smelt. It's a primitive response.

When you're talking about scents, you have to discuss notes. The note is based on when you smell that scent.

A High Note is the first thing you'll notice, but then disappears quickly

A Middle Note holds the fragrance with a body and steady smell

The Low Note anchors the scent, and this is what you're left with at the end of the day

Carrier Oils for Aromatherapy

Article on Tea Tree Oil

---------------------------------------

Carrier oils are what you use to dilute essential oils. They come in many different types. Here are a few you can use:

Sweet Almond oil is a great option, as it absorbs pretty quickly and isn't too expensive. It also has a sweet, nutty smell to it. (I love the smell of sweet almond oil!)

Apricot oil and Avocado oil are other choices for carrier oils. The Avocado oil tends to be a little heavier.

Evening Primrose is a little more expensive, but can be used. Cocoa Butter isn't the best choice, but has a delicious smell.

Grapeseed oil is another excellent choice to use as a carrier oil.

Olive Oil tends to be a little too heavy and greasy.

Jojoba oil has a long shelf life and absorbs quickly. This is also an excellent choice to be used as a carrier oil.

There are many more I could list like sesame, shea butter, kukui, but if you're just starting out one of the above choices would be a great place to begin.
