FIRST IMPRESSIONS AT A JOB INTERVIEW

type=textWe have all been told that first impressions are vitally important. This cannot be overstated as you prepare for a job interview. With hundreds (maybe thousands) of applicants for the same position, you must impress the recruiter within the first minute of the interview.

A few first impression tips:

1) Be on time
2) Dress for success
3) Offer a firm handshake, make eye contact and smile
4) Be prepared - have a copy of your resume, have questions ready as well as answers to anticipated questions, know something about the company
5) Provide honest answers
6) Provide concise answers - respect the busy schedule of the recruiter
7) Express enthusiasm but remain professional - you are seeking a new job not a new friend
8) Do your best to remain calm

Whether you are preparing for your first job interview or the 100th interview, these tips are absolutely critical for a successful interview.
Important!

PREPARE FOR YOUR JOB INTERVIEW

In the current job market, it is more important than ever that you use every available tool in your job search. Getting an interview is a huge step forward - now you need to prepare, rehearse, and prepare some more. Remember that there are most likely many other candidates for the one position. Prepare, rehearse and get that job offer!

DO YOUR RESEARCH

KNOW YOUR FUTURE EMPLOYER

You need some solid background information about the company before the interview. At the time the interview is scheduled, request some

details about the open position and ask if there is any available company literature. Next, turn to the Internet. If the company has a web site, this may prove to be a gold mine of information. And, of course, you can always "Google" the company name. This research will be invaluable when the interviewer asks what you know about the company. If you have done the research, you will know what products the company makes and/or sells. If it is a service driven company, you will be familiar with the specific services provided. Researching a prospective employer has another huge advantage. This process can reveal information about the stability of the company and the company culture. Not all companies have good reputations and an optimistic future. It may not be a company that meets your standards. If you are acquainted with someone employed by the company, you have a potentially great source of inside information.

RESEARCH AND PREPARE

REHEARSE FOR THE INTERVIEW

There are many excellent books and web sites that set out typical interview questions and tips for suggested good answers. It is well worth the time and money to invest in these resources. Two questions that are almost a certainty in any interview: what do you know about the company and why do you want to work for the company. If you have completed thorough research, you will be able to answer these questions with confidence. There are, of course, many other example questions and answers provided in the books and on the web sites. Be prepared to sell yourself in the interview by providing examples of your work related accomplishments and the skills that will benefit the company. Remember that the interview is a conversation, not an interrogation. You should ask questions and listen carefully to the interviewer to assess whether this position and this company are in your best interest. Do not ask questions about benefits and salary. You should ask questions about the potential for growth and advancement within the company. You can ask about company expectations of the candidate during the first year of employment. These are just a couple of examples of valid questions. Preparation for the interview is absolutely necessary. After you have a list of several anticipated interview questions and suggested answers, find someone to help you rehearse. Role play the interview several times until you feel comfortable with the process.

SHOW TIME

INTERVIEW DAY IS HERE

The big day is finally here! Your appearance is a huge part of the impression you will make on the interviewer. You need to dress for the job position you want. Inappropriate appearance or behavior in an interview can eliminate you as a job candidate regardless of your education, skills or work experience. Use common sense but if you still have doubts about your attire, seek advice from a trusted source.

Be on time for the interview. Arriving several minutes early will give you the opportunity to take a deep breath and relax before the interview. Remember to smile, make eye contact, shake hands and do your very best to remain calm. At the end of the interview, remember to thank the interviewer for the time and opportunity to interview.

If you have spent time in preparation for the interview, you will have more self-confidence and the interview will be successful.
