What Is Acid Reflux?

Acid Reflux is a common irritation of the walls of the esophagus after eating. As many as 36% of all healthy Americans experience this condition.

Acid reflux is a common condition in the West and there is a suggestion that it is increasing. Obesity is increasing in the West and since obesity can cause or worsen acid reflux, the increase in acid reflux is likely to be related to a combination of our diet, lifestyle and obesity.

Acid reflux is neither a serious disorder nor life threatening. This is especially true for those who only experience it occasionally.

What Causes Acid Reflux?

Acid reflux is commonly caused by a "hiatal hernia" - damage to the pyloric valve separating the stomach from the esophagus. When the valve cannot close completely, then liquids and gasses from the stomach can rise into the throat and oral cavity, to remain there until once again flushed back down.

Acid reflux is now recognized as a cause of sinus infections.

Acid reflux is a common problem, and is thought to occur in 4% to 10% of patients presenting to ENT clinics. A recent study of reflux and voice disorders suggests that up to 55% of patients with hoarseness (dysphonia) have laryngopharyngeal reflux.

Acid reflux is the burning sensation felt when the stomach acid backs up into the esophagus, or throat, and can sometimes be quite painful. It is a condition that affects more than 40% of the population .

Acid reflux is a painful condition that affects millions of people all over the world. It is caused when your stomachs digestive acids make their way up into the esophagus. This may cause heartburn and other symptoms.

The best meditation instruction I've come across,

The DVD is divided into three main sections:
Mindful Yoga: a 15-minute yoga program that focusses on relaxing the body with lots of seated poses, a little downward dog. Nothing strenuous.

The music is subtle and perfectly suited, the backdrops are lush and beautifully filmed.

All of this makes, for what I think, is a perfect meditation DVD, and yet here is the best part: Martiza's words, her narration, is so superbly written and resonates with such deep humanism and truth that I really am beginning to understand what mediation is, and what I am trying to achieve. Like I said, I'm an ornery student, but she's really that good.

What Are The Symptoms Of Acid Reflux?

Symptoms often start after you eat. They grow worse when you lie down or bend over and improve when you sit or stand up.

Symptoms occur when this specialized muscle weakens and allows stomach acid to splash up into the esophagus.

These symptoms include heartburn, chest discomfort, and bitter fluid flowing up into the mouth.

Treatment For Acid Reflux

Treatment can vary from simply dietary and lifestyle changes to medication and surgery. The first place to begin treating heartburn is by avoiding foods and beverages that weaken the lower esophageal sphincter.

Treatment may take six months to cure. Longer treatment is not recommended.

Treatment with omeprazole resulted in a significant decrease in the number of acid reflux episodes; however, nonacid reflux continued to occur and was responsible for some symptoms. Thus, acid suppression did not result in a decrease in total reflux episodes but rather in a shift from acid to nonacid reflux in the immediate postprandial period.

Acid Reflux ON Wikipedia

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), gastric reflux disease, or acid reflux disease is defined as chronic symptoms or mucosal damage produced by the abnormal reflux in

the esophagus.

This is commonly due to transient or permanent changes in the barrier between the esophagus and the stomach. This can be due to incompetence of the lower esophageal sphincter, transient lower esophageal sphincter relaxation, impaired expulsion of gastric reflux from the esophagus, or a hiatal hernia.

Respiratory and laryngeal manifestations of GERD are commonly referred to as extraesophageal reflux disease (EERD).

I liked all of your information, I even learned a couple of things. However, you mentioned using additional pillows. I've read a couple places that it could cause more problems because it actually puts pressure on the stomach.

Either way great lens. Thanks. Mike
