Do You Need Acid Reflux Surgery ?

Acid Reflux Surgery. If you have been suffering from acid reflux for some time you are probably wondering whether or not the only solution is acid reflux surgery.
Discover the possibilities open to you to make the right decision with your doctor.

Introducing the Nissen Fundoplication

The increasingly popular solution to Acid Reflux

Nissen Fundoplication is becoming increasingly popular as a 'quick fix' for long-term acid reflux. The basic concept is to make incisions in the top of the stomach, lift it up around the LES and then close the incisions tightly around the LES. This assists the LES in staying shut when under pressure and thus preventing reflux.

Although this is a serious procedure, keyhole surgery techniques make this much quicker, less invasive and less expensive than before. As an alternative to a lifetime of medication, many people are choosing to take this route and often find they are out of hospital within the day and back to their daily activities very soon afterwards.

This may sound like a wonderful cure-all. Well, unfortunately it's not necessarily that simple. Some people have reported greater difficulty in swallowing as the pressure round the LES makes it equally more difficult for food to pass into the stomach as out of it. Also, bloating can worsen because the intestinal gases which have built up are not allowed to pass out through the throat. In turn this may make anything but small meals difficult to cope with.

Have a look at the gruesome video further down and also read some more about other surgery options.

Some Outdated Surgery Options

In a similar manner, a procedure called pyloroplasty opens up the passage between the bottom of your stomach and the large intestine allowing the stomach to empty more quickly. Gases are therefore not able to build up in the stomach and therefore the LES is not put under so much reflux strain.

In essence, unless there really is a physical problem with either of these muscles, these two procedures are in effect just workarounds to control the pressure which forces acid to reflux through the LES. If the real problem is poor digestive function, then the LES is still under strain and, if allowed to get worse, could potentially physically fail for real.

The overall message here is that surgery should be the route of last resort or emergency only. I believe in exploring every other avenue of investigation before choosing something that you later cannot go back on.
