Action Man from 1993

Ranked #11,853 in Hobbies, Games & Toys, #167,103 overall

Action Man returns - 1993

After an absence of almost 10 years, Action Man arrived back on the scene.

In the previous tour of duty, the figure had undergone a number of changes and now, Action Man had been working out.

The first four figures to go on sale in the UK were rebadged G I Joe figures from the USA, Cobra Commander, Stalker, Snake Eyes and Duke, but the UK Action Man soon began to develop his own identity, just as he had done almost 3 decades earlier.

Spies, Astronauts, Adventurers and Explorers, Sportsmen and all manner of service jobs are covered in the uniforms and, even though the collection I have is huge, it by no means includes all the figures and vehicles available.

This will take more than one lens as the vehicles alone will require a lens to themselves but I will add more detailed photographs of individual figures as time goes on.

Stalker

It's so addictive - Action Man collections just keep on growing

... will there ever be a complete collection?

Without a doubt, the more modern Action Man will become collectable in the fairly near future yet it is still possible to pick up examples quite cheaply.

The biggest problem is ensuring you have everything which should go with the figure, from clothes to weapons and missiles, there are normally items missing.

If you are lucky, you spot the missing items in a mixed bundle of Action Man accessories. Indeed, I have managed to complete most of the sets I have. Of course, this has left me with an assortment of missiles and parts which don't belong to any of the figures I have ... just goes to show how many figures and sets I have yet to find.

There are also wanna-be Action Men figures, like Max Steele, just to confuse the issue. I have a couple of the Max Steele figures and a few of the bad guys which go with him as well as a sports car with some real James Bond style fixtures. I don't expect these to attain the same collectable status as the genuine article but it is interesting to compare the quality etc.

The Action Man bad guys

... Dr X, No-face, Professor Gangrene, Tempest, Anti-Freeze

A whole new range of bad guys came along for Action Man to do battle with. The first of these to appear was Dr. X in 1994 and further Dr.X figures appeared in the following years.

Later, he was joined by Professor Gangrene (first version 1997), Tempest (2001), Anti-Freeze (2003), the X Robots and No-face (I need to check his date).

Most of the bad guys are available in more than one guise. There seems to have been a new version of Dr. X every year but to cope with this growing army of baddies, Action Man was not alone.

Action Man - quite a hunk

The Action Man good guys ...

... Flynt, Redwolf, Natalie and you

A whole range of merchandise came about, videos, DVDs, TV cartoons, Playstation games, books and, of course, children's clothing. Yes, I have a collection of all of those as well.

Amongst these you'll find Flynt, Redwolf and Natalie in the cartoons and the figures for these characters are not quite so easily found, especially Natalie.

Perhaps the Natalie figure didn't sell as well since she is not really a girl's doll, she has a built-in (and quite fierce) kick but I'm not sure how many boys would want her in their team or how many girls would want a doll who is a bit of a tough nut.

I found my Natalie for sale in Germany and snapped her up at a bargain price.

Flynt is an Australian lad with a boomerang firing arm, he comes in a couple of versions but Redwolf is (to the best of my knowledge) only available in one version and his bow and arrows really work.

Mission Grizzly

Animals in Action Man sets ...

... a whole zoo of them

Mission Grizzly (2000) is probably my favourite of the animal sets. The bear is remote controlled by manipulating the handler's arm, raising and lowering the arm will drive the bear, turning him from side to side, and a button on the front of the Action Man figure fires the missile. Great fun.

There are many animals in the Action Man collection and I'll include pictures of them all eventually, from the Falcon Master's bird to the dinosaurs and snakes, dogs (including a robodog), tiger, dolphin, shark and gorilla.

Bad guys - No-face and Professor Gangrene

Action Man room guard

... speaks more than one languge

We have the Action Man room guard, he's standing to the left of the little picture, a real sharp-eyed character, there's no sneaking up on him as he turns his head and shouts out "I can smell you".

We also had the Spanish version of this room guard but to an English ear, some of the phrases could sound a little rude and we particularly weren't sure of letting a child hear Action Man talking about "Doctor Eccy" - it may be Dr. X in Spanish (and I don't know how it should be spelled in Spanish) but in the UK there is an illegal drug referred to as "eccies" ... we decided it would be better to sell him on to another collector.

Deep sea diving, swimming, skiing, climbing ...

... mountain biking, parachuting, abseiling ...

You name the activity and Action Man takes part.

Amongst his accessories are snowboards, street boards, skis, snowbikes, bungee jumping gear, camping equiment, diving cage and equipment, canoes and much much more.

There is an Action Man swimmer who is great fun in the bath, just wind his arms backwards, set him loose in the water and watch him go.

The dolphin is bath safe, as is the shark (you can get your hand inside the shark like a puppet if your hand is small), indeed, the dolphin fires water ... be prepared for a very wet bathroom.

It will be impossible to include everything in one lens as there are so many activities Action Man is equipped for that I will have to sort them into categories and link several lenses together.

Action Man - so many to choose from.

Vehicles for Action Man

From simple bicyles to the complex mobile headquarters of the team truck, Action Man has many choices of vehicle to drive or ride around on.

Jeeps, armoured cars, buggies, motorbikes racing cars, helicopters, Formula 1 sportscar, submarine and camouflage underwater vehicles, the range is quite amazing.

These certainly require a lens all of their own and it won't be just one lens either ... oh my.

Where to find more Action Man

ActionManRacerI found a new site for Action Man in my travels around the web. You can see some interesting auctions highlighted and for more on Vintage Action Man, you might want to visit this Action Toys site.

Wonderful lens that took me back some 40 years. My family was too poor to take on the extra mouths to feed that an army of G.I. Joes would've brought, but I had connections. My friend Mark seemed to always have a new figure we could pit against the bad guys in all manners of fabled crisises.
