Are you addicted to free time?

Ranked #20,452 in Culture & Society, #415,897 overall

So what is a free time junky?

Addiction: "the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming, as narcotics, to such an extent that its cessation causes severe trauma."

Free time: "time that is free from duties or responsibilities"

So being addicted to free time is a psychological enslavement to being free from duties and responsibilities. How the hell does this sorta thing develop in our modern society/culture and what (if anything) should we do to remedy it?

Here are some tell tale signs of free time addiction:

  • You have no job, school or other time controlled activities. Or if you do have a time controlled task, you constantly plot and scheme to finish it up asap

  • You burn up all your vacation, sick time, and unpayed leave in a year

  • You get in early to work just so you can leave early and have a bigger chunk of free time each day

  • You hate locking your schedule down with any plans, even fun ones because who knows something cooler could pop up

  • Deep down you know you should be experiencing and exploring the world instead of watching it pass you by

There's an undisclosed ticket price though, you have to be able to cover your life's expenses and the cost of any travel/entertainment activities!

Exploration

Go to a local museum (this picture was shot in the Hayden Planetarium), go for a walk in the local park, check out that beautiful mountain trail. As a free time junky, there's nothing more glorious than waking up and coming up with a spur of the moment trip with friends!

Don't stop there. You can explore your neighborhood by taking a walk. Call up a friend who you wish to chat with more. Rummage in the garage or basement looking around for some old half finished project and pick it back up.

One of my favorite explorations is going for a random drive and letting my interest take me somewhere new.

Hanging out with friends

It doesn't take a huge amount of entertainment planning when a group of friends gets together. Before you know it, you'll be part of a new adventure. Enjoy the ride as your group takes the wheel of life and follows their imaginations.

From late night Home Depot runs, to impromptu movies or games there's no better way to satiate a free time junky's hunger for slack than spending time with friends.

Lazy or efficient?

We all have the capability of finding efficient ways to get things done. Why not apply that same principle to our work lives? Who's to say we can't earn an entire life's worth of wages in just a few years of working on a labor of love?

We owe it to ourselves to spend some time seeking something we can devote ourselves to fully. This is it! Forget about fear, make the plunge now in order to maximize your life's free time. It'll be the wisest decision you ever make, and the most profitable action you'll ever take.

Our world has a rich tapestry of historical figures that worked hard because they believed in something. It just so happens that many of humanity's greatest accomplishments were labors of love as well. Find your vital energy, and focus it efficiently doing something you really have passion for.

Sporting events

What better way to burn an afternoon/evening than getting together and experiencing a large stadium sport. From the trip to game, to the pre-game BBQ, adventures can be forged by an intrepid group.

This guy (Ron) love's pretzels + mustard, but doesn't religiously follow soccer and he still had one helluva time. Let's just not bring up the 11 hours we spent in the car that day...

Travelling to hell to visit friends

Well not Hell per say, but Bowling Green Ohio is a pretty "unique region" if you are more accustomed to bigger towns and cities. Time may indeed draw you and your closest friends apart, but they're only a phone call or plane trip away. Our dearest friends often discover their life paths take them across the globe.

It's up to us to make the free time to go and visit them all as much as we can afford to. Fear not Free Time Addict, if you master your time efficiency they'll be abundant time for travel as well as abundant cash!

Spending time with someone you love

There's nothing greater than having the freedom to spend time with those we love. It doesn't matter much what we do together, from long walks, to movies, to sharing a wonderful meal. By sharing our full presence and awareness with a loved one, our vital energies are renewed. The simple act of closeness to our loved ones gives us faith that even the darkest of times will fade easily into the past. We can appreciate each shared moment as a gift.

Each day we're thankful for the wonderful moments and memories that loved ones effortlessly conjure.
