About Adelaide
What I like best
Adelaide is a turn of the century city with classic buildings. A feature of the city is its tram system and especially the tram from the city to the beach at Glenelg. A very popular destination by locals in the evening. The city has an old world charm which the locals have adopted as part of their makeup. The city is also called the city of churches and has a great many beautiful churches of all denominations.
Just on the outskirts of the main city area is the cultural center. The center draws acts from all over the world. These performances range form opera to modern pieces. Next to the arts center are various museums and art galleries. A must see is the art gallery of South Australia which holds some very good early European pieces and some of the very best early Australian works. Notice in particular how the early Australian painters were able to capture the light, vegetation and feel of Australia. The South Australian museum holds an excellent range of displays amongst which deal with the Mawson Antarctic expedition and the evolution of life as found in local fossils.
Backing onto the art gallery and museum is the Adelaide botanical gardens and the zoo.
Some restaurants in Adelaide have unique cuisine which utilize local products such as crocodile, emu and kangaroo. The animals used in these meals are not endangered and are mostly farm raised. Kangaroo has very little fat and is normally serves with a red wine sauce and mashed potatoes. Emu is a dark meat and tastes a bit like turkey. Crocodile is similar to chicken. The seafood served in restaurants is caught in the local area. Around Adelaide are large areas devoted to the production of fruits and vegetables. Locals do not lack for cheap, good quality food.
Very large wineries are located in the hills outside Adelaide in the Barossa and Clare Valleys. Most of the Australian wine consumed in Europe and north America comes from these two areas. Despite being huge industrial complexes, you still get individual attention at the wine tasting. Tours of the wine areas is a must.
Adelaide is also the home of opals. You will find a great number of jewelers who work with opal in this city. Great discounts can be found.
There are a variety of accommodation available in Adelaide ranging form the expensive to Bed and Breakfasts.
