Best known for the 6 million acre Adirondack State Park, featuring 46 "High Peaks" dominated by Mt. Marcy at 5,344 feet, New York's highest point. Over 85% of the wilderness east of the Mississippi is located within the park. With over 3,000 lakes and ponds, 2,000 miles of hiking trails, and 4-seasons, this is a recreationalist's paradise.

Essential Resources 

Information to help you find and plan your next Adirondack Hike.

In general, all trailhead parking within the Forest Preserve are free and first come, first serve. There is no charge except at The Garden and at Heart Lake.

Please be courteous, LEAVE NO TRACE, and respect private property.

Walk, picnic, bike...bring as many friends as your car holds! The Passport provides access to most of the 178 state parks, 55 Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) forest preserve areas, as well as to boat launch sites, arboretums and park preserves.

Available for only $59, the Passport can be used from April 1 to March 31 of the following year and pays for itself in 8 visits. A discounted rate of $50 is available for the purchase of a second passport, when purchased at the same time as the first passport, for a vehicle in the same household. This may be used on a boat, motorcycle or a second passenger vehicle.

True, it's not a 'Park' in the modern usage. The original meaning and use referring to this area is more akin to 'a place to recreate'.

Nice work overall, only problem is it's not a "State Park".

The APA was created making the area in the blueline (sort of) a park in principle, but it's actually a forest preserve. NYS Parks Dept has no legal rights in the park, which is controlled/patrolled by the NYS-DEC.
