Everything You Need to Know About Aion Aether

Aion has many interesting items, one of which is aether. Aether comes in many forms, from white value Aether Powder to the orange value Brilliant Aether. Aether is used to transform and create many items and are a necessity for any able crafter. Aether is also what allows Asmodians and Elyos to fly in certain areas. If there is aether, then you can fly. Aether is mainly found in the abyss but is also found in other areas scattered around Atreia. On this page you will find the types of vortexes and what kind of aether comes from them, the levels you need to gather from those vortexes, guides to finding the best vortex areas, and a few tips and tricks to make aether farming a little more bearable.

Where to Find Aether

Where to find the different levels of vortexes

For lvl 1-75 you will be gathering from a Small Vortex.

For lvl 100-175 you will be gathering from a Big Vortex.

Asmodian: Altgard, Morheim, Reshanta

For lvl 200-275 you will be gathering from a Shining Vortex.

At lvl 99, lvl 199, and lvl 299 your skill will not increase until you visit the Extract Aether Master in your home city. He will teach you what you need to know to expand your skill. You will have to pay him to attain the next level and increase your maximum skill max by 100.

*I was informed that Burning Vortexes can be found in Morhiem and Eltnen on very rare occasions

Tips, Tricks, and Macros

Ways to make the timely aether farming a little easier

Everyone I know hates gathering. It takes forever and aether farming especially is even more timely since you have to wait for your flight timer to reset. I've gathered a few tips and tricks to help aether farming be a little more bearable.

Get a gathering hat
You can get an Aether Gatherer Hat from the aether extraction item vendor in the artisan areas of Pandemonium and Sanctum, or there is one that is made by handicrafters. The hat will dot off all of the aether vortexes in your minimap. All of the vortex will respawn in their same spots so once you know where they are you wouldn't need the hat, but in the abyss it is helpful for finding the higher level vortexes.

Extra flight time items
There are many items in the game that give you extra flight time. You can change your title, wear different gear, eat food, or take pots.

Bypass the delay
Aion has a small 1-2 second delay on gathering an item and there is a way to bypass it. As soon as the aether shows in your inventory, hit any movement key, in any direction and instantly click on the vortex again. You shave off the 1-2 second waiting time before you have to try again. This becomes especially useful against people trying to take the next attempt from you. This makes every second you are flying count.

Know when you can fall safely
When the arrow on your minimap is blue you can survive the fall, but when it turns purple you will die from the fall.

Fly up
If you are gathering from an unsafe height, (you'll die if you hit the ground) start flying upwards instead of trying to get down quickly. This may seem counter-productive but when you fly up and then let your flight timer run out, you will gain flight time back while you drop. You can then pop your wings open before you hit the ground and have a few seconds to land or be close enough to the ground that when you run out of flight time again the drop will not kill you.

Glide
This is a common tactic but it can still be dangerous. I do this when I don't have the chance to fly upwards but am still afraid I may die from a fall. When you are about to hit the ground hit spacebar and hope you have enough glide time to get to the ground. Be careful though, when you glide out of a fall the game still takes your momentum into account and if you fall out of a glide, you still may die, even if you are only 5 feet from the ground when you drop!

Macros
There are not aether gathering bots that I know of, and if there are, I would not promote them. Bots are lazy people's tools and ruin the game for the people that want to really play and experience the game as a whole. You can however use macros to help with gathering.

This macro is what I use when I want to tab out and am farming a node that I can fall safely from. I press the macro, tab out and do something, then check back and do it again once my flight time is back up, either at a new safe node, or if the same one has respawned. This is not a "quick" way to gather, but one where you can multitask with the game tabbed out while you do other things.

**You must select the vortex you want to attack before activating this macro**

/Skill Toggle Flight/Landing
/Delay 3
/Attack
/Delay 9
/Select Small Vortex
/Attack
/Delay 9
/Select Small Vortex
/Attack
/Delay 9
/Select Small Vortex
/Attack
/Delay 9
/Select Small Vortex
/Attack
/Delay 9
/Select Small Vortex
/Attack

Change the /Select to whatever type of vortex you wish to gather from, in my case for testing the macro, it was a Small Vortex. The first /Delay of 3 seconds is because of the time used to open your wings. I have the /Delay set to 9 instead of 10 because I wouldn't have enough character space due to the macro limitations to allow 6 chances to attack the vortex. If you are close to the same skill lvl as the vortex, you may have to up the /Delay time and may only be able to get 5 tries in.

Asmodian Aether Guide

Best places to find aether as an Asmodian

The first place you will run into aether is Altgard. You will find mainly lvl 1 aether vortexes but high up you can find lvl 25 aether vortexes. I prefer to find one aether vortex and camp it, or change channels if I want to speed it up. Since aether gathering is a very boring and lengthy process, I normally do it while watching tv or tabbing out doing other things. You can fall from this vortex and not get hurt and it is easy to go up and down from the hill to the vortex.

In Algard there is a great lvl 1 vortex here:

Once you hit lvl 25 aether extracting you'll want to go to Impetusium. Here you will find lvl 25 and lvl 50 aether vortexes. Be careful though, all of these vortexes are high enough to kill you if you fall. You can fly up as high as you can when you are about to run out of flight time so you can gain back flight time as you fall and hope you can pop your wings out for a few seconds before you hit. You can also drop and hope to hit space bar and glide into the ground. (this can still kill you if you do fall out of a glide with high falling momentum so be careful)

In Impetusium there is a great lvl 25 vortex here:

Once you hit lvl 50 aether extracting you'll want to stay in Impetusium just a little longer.

In Impetusium there are 2 easy access lvl 50 vortexes here:

One is right out of the rock piece that you will want to land on, and the second is kind of underneath the rock piece.

Once you hit lvl 75 aether extracting you'll want to go to Morhiem. Here you will find lvl 75 and lvl 100 aether vortexes. There are quite a few safe from falling death lvl 75 vortexes.

In Morhiem there are 2 close together safe lvl 75 vortexes here:

When you hit lvl 99 aether extracting REMEMBER TO GO TO THE EXTRACTION MASTER TO RAISE YOUR SKILL LEVEL TO 100-199 then come back to Morhiem. The lvl 100 vortexes are much higher and most are not safe from falling death unless you use the tactics stated above were you fly up or glide at the last second. So be careful!

In Morhiem there two easy access lvl 100 vortexes here:

I've been leveling my aether gathering skill and am now stuck at 317. Have had to skill up on the 275 vortex's to get this high. My char is only lvl 33 sorc. It seems the only place you can find burning vortex's that are skill 300 is in heiron but they are in a 40 area, the storm circle, that is nigh on impossible to get to being a low level cloth class. Anyone know of somewhere else, Elyos, that they've found the 300 burning vortex's besides the area I've mentioned? Seems strange that you get a lvl 29 quest to harvest 300 vortex's but it isn't possible to get to till you can fight 40 mobs or get some high lvl friends to help you get there!
