Dynamic Affiliate Links - Optimised for Lenses

If you are a member of one or more affiliate programs, like Amazon, then you probably already know how put static links on your lenses. However, over time these links can become outdated or even broken, and you could be losing revenue because of this.

Affiliate RSS Feeds allow you dynamically display products on your lens, such that they are always up-to-date. All you need to do is add a RSS module to your lens, and then setup one of the feeds shown below.

How To Add an Affiliate Feed

  1. Generate the RSS feed you need from the tools below.
  2. Add an RSS Feed Module to your lens.
  3. Copy the URL provided, and paste it in to the RSS module.
  4. Enter how many items you want to see.
  5. For the Excerpt, select 'everything available'.
  6. Make sure you select 'Yes' to 'display HTML in excerpt'.

eBay RSS Feeds

One of the other top money making modules on Squidoo is the eBay module. As with the Amazon module above, Lensmasters who have signed up with eBay Partner Network can potentially earn more money by using an eBay RSS feed instead of Squidoo's module.

This tool supports a bunch of countries (including US Motors), and the feeds are optimised for Squidoo. All you need to do is provide your Campaign ID, and a search term. There are a bunch of other options that you can choose if you need them. Example feed is shown below.

Tips:
1. use the name of the lens as the SID, so that you can track it.
2. make sure you set the RSS module to update every 30 minutes.

Amazon Associate RSS Feeds

Squidoo has a perfectly wonderful Amazon module (actually, there are 4 Amazon modules), and this can be setup to show a dynamic list of products. However, any revenue earn from these modules will share with Squidoo.

Lensmasters who are also Amazon Associates will have the option of using RSS feeds instead of a module, and this will allow them to potentially earn more revenue.

Amazon RSS Feeds

There are three types of RSS feed available for Amazon: by Category, by Listmania list and by Product ASIN. The most commonly used type is probably by Category, and you can choose between having the Top Sellers or the New Releases. Feeds can be displayed in 4 different styles, with product images, descriptions and prices.

An example is shown below. For more information about these feeds, and for other examples, visit the lens on how to set up your own Amazon RSS Feeds.

Tips:
1. use the node browser on the page to find a good category.
2. setup the RSS module to update no more often than once per day.

Example Amazon Feed

Here is one of the 4 styles available for Amazon Feeds, showing 6 products with large images in a grid. The other styles show 5 products in a list, accompanied by descriptions.

eCrater RSS Feeds

This Yahoo! Pipe takes the feeds provide by eCrater, and tweaks them for optimal display on a Squidoo Lens. This is primarily for people who are have their own stores on eCrater, as they don't have an affiliate program.

eCrater RSS Feeds

  • You must specify a store name, i.e. the first part of the store's domain.
  • The category number (CID) can be found at the end of the URL.
  • The Sort can be one of: date, name or price.
  • Keywords are optional.

Once you have enter the options you need and are happy with the results, you need to click on "More options" to get the RSS feed. Right click on the link on the menu to copy it, and then paste it into your RSS module.

Example of eCrater Feed

Here is what the new feed will look like. It is almost identical to the one provided by eCrater, but the "Buy Now" button is placed neatly next to the image instead of being underneath it.

Reader Feedback

There will be more affiliate programs added to the list soon, with new tools to generate the feeds for you. If there's a particular program you'd like to see supported, or if you're having problems, please let me know.

I use your eBay RSS feeds all the time now from SquidUtils. Enormously helpful, and it looks better than the eBay module (sorry, Squidoo!). I also like that you can add ten items. Welcome to the eBay Education Headquarters, Squid Angel blessed!
