So the affiliate marketer of today is generally also a Internet Marketer and visa versa.

Today affiliate marketing has become quite established and is growing at a staggering rate and become a powerful way for a company to attract customers. Marketing Sherpa's research team estimated that, in 2006, affiliates worldwide earned $6.5 billion in bounty and commissions! This figure is expect to continue to climb.

I will attempt to explain how this Industry works and how everyday folks like you and me can take advantage of it. I'll try and keep it as simple as possible....
The reason a company will share its profits with you for promoting them is simply that this can dramatically increase their sales volume. If they offer a good product/service chances are pretty good customers will be back, which provides them with a nice sized residual customer base. A team of experienced Internet Marketers will get the companies product/service in front of more potential customers than they could ever hope to on their own.

How does an Affiliate Marketer Get Paid?
And how do they know which affiliate made which referral?
Technology to the Rescue!!
To simplify and fool proof affiliate tracking, each registered affiliate gets a unique ID. This can be a number or user ID. When an affiliate finds a product or service they wish to promote they create a unique link that will credit any sale generated by that link to the affiliate.
For example, lets say we are going to promote Jim Bob's latest Tractor Guide he is selling from his site jimbob.com. He signs up with a Affiliate Management Company (more on this below) such as clickbank.com. They help to set up his account and post his product within the directory of approved Merchants for prospective Affiliate Marketers to see and consider promoting for Jim Bob. He has decided to offer 50% commission of the $49.97 price of his guide sold on his site. While this may seem like a lot, for Jim Bob he expects his future customers will be so happy with his guide that many will become long term customers. The Affiliate Marketer gets $25 for each Tractor guide that a customer buys as a result of clicking their unique link. The Affiliate usually does not get commissions on returning customer sales.
To get their unique Link, the affiliate will log into their account with the affiliate management company, in this case, Clickbank.com. From there the affiliate can review Jimbob.com's product and commission. If they decide to promote his guide then with a few click the affiliate will get the system, Clickbank, to generate a unique link that can be copied and promoted. The custom link would look something like this (this is a made up link for illustration, I don't think it'll go anywhere);

Now the affiliate can go off and promote Jim Bob's Tractor guide with their new custom link. Every time a fellow tractor lover buys the guide through that link, the affiliate earns a commission. There 100's of different affiliate programs. Some are run by the company itself, like Amazon.com and some are managed through a Merchant Affiliate Management Company, such as Clickbank.com, cj.com and linkshare.com to name just a few. You can sign up online for free with most any affiliate program.

Many a marketer has Done VERY well through implementation of the Internet classified network. One of the most affordable methods of using Classified is USFree Ads. The reason they are so good is the cost is FAR superior to PPC and USFree Ads. Further, they have a very high Google Ranking. This means that if you do your keyword research well, you can show up on Googles First page. USFree Ads
If you have an eBay account, you can use the eBay.com classifieds, which while more expensive, is a very Search Engine Powerful advertising medium.
Personal Website(s)
Many companies operate through a website. They can make money from the site from Google AdSense, ads that Google places on your site, or from visitors following an affiliate link through to purchase. There are Many Many different models and themes people can use. A fast, effective and affordable way to get a quality website launched is a all in one service. They have a host of tools to build the site (so you don't need to know a lot of HTML), they host it. Some offer Search Engine Optimization as a component of the service. Site Sell/Build it will help to place your site in the top 1% of the websites online, which is HUGE. They have a promo going on that you can check out here. SiteSell or SiteBuildit
If you are thinking of hosting multiple sites you will be better off to get yourself a good hosting package. Some hosts are begining to include some pretty good web development tools with hosting packages. Webhosting Pad has a really good promo going on, which includes Adwords Credit, Yahoo Credit and a few other Paid advertising credits. They also have a bunch of web development tools available to help build a site, without being a html wiz.
Article Marketing
Squidoo, HubPages.com, Enzine Articles, GoArticles. This is a free and powerful marketing system. The important thing to consider is that people will expect to see useful content, not a pushy sales page. Write about something you enjoy, a hobby or favorite destination. People appreciate literature that is interesting and genuine.
Blog Marketing
An active Blog is ever changing. Google likes that. So a active Blog will attract a considerable amount of traffic that marketers can leverage. Wordpress is the most popular tool for website owners to run their own Blog. The great thing about WordPress is that its free. You do still need your own web hosting of course.
Forum Marketing
As with Articles, don't bother unless you have something valuable to contribute. The best thing to do is to join forums that are in topics that interest you. That way your interaction is more natural and more likely to be accepted. People, once they have earned a small amount of respect in the forum, will market via this avenue by placing affiliate links into their signature line. You must be a good and respectful member, they do close accounts when people are considered to just be 'selling'.
Email Marketing
If you have acquired a contact list, you can promote products through a newsletter or other email marketing method. Please don't spam people, its just plain rude. Provide useful info on your topic and you will have faithful subscribers. My personal recommendation of the best eMail Autoresponder service, based on cost, features, reliability and customer service is GetResponse
Don't have a list, but have a product to promote? Joint Ventures are very popular in the Internet Marketing Industry. Approach an established company in your Niche and propose a Joint Venture for distributing to their list.
