How do they track your sales and commission?
When you join one of the affiliate marketing companies, you are either asked to choose your username or automatically given one. You will then have access to a back office where you can usually find banners and your text link.
You will use your text link (it is also referred to as a "hoplink") as your sales link. For you to receive your affiliate commission, the customer must use your hoplink to access the merchant site.

How long does a customer have to purchase a product?
Your hoplink will remain active for a specified amount of time. This time period usually ranges from one week (eBay) to 90 days. It is important that you read your affiliate agreement so you know what the terms are what type of tactics you can implement.

Basically, if someone uses your link to visit the merchant page, they have to purchase an item within seven days if the affiliate program is eBay. So if they make the purchase on the 8th day, you do not receive the commission.
