Living with an African Grey, Ellie Mae

African Grey parrots are so much company and so much fun. You need to have one to understand how smart they are and how a bird can bring laughter to your home. They learn to talk like a child. Explaining what you are doing and why and chatting when in the room. It won't be long and the Grey will be part of the family. Calling out to you and greetings in the morning or the words "goodnite, it's time to go to sleep". So much to love for many years.
Our story
Ellie Mae was named by the breeder who had a hard time letting go of her. Ellie Mae was 7 months old when I did a 3 week trial period. Well, it's been 4 years and this parrot is a joy to have in the home. The notebook had over 300 words in it when I finally quit writing them in. Each new word was entered on a line with the date she said it. Once she started talking , the words added up fast. She knew how to whistle the "wolf whistle" and that's it the day I got her. The first words were "hi you guys", "prettybird" and "peek a boo". When she untied a knot in a rope, I knew this was a very smart bird. Through the years her vocabulary has grown along with whistles and songs she tries to sing. Of course, "Take me out to the ballgame" and "you are my sunshine". is my favorite. I love it when she does the farmyard animals and says, "I'm so smart I can count". then, she counts to 10. In the morning there are greetings like, "good morning sunshine" and when I leave the house she says "bye bye see ya later". Then there's the "goodnight it's time to go to sleep". She enjoys her seeds and fruits and vegetables. When making soups or salads or eating an apple, I save a small amount for Ellie Mae. I buy roasted (no salt) peanuts at the grocery store and give her a piece of sweet potato or a bite of fruit when putting away the groceries . She continues to learn new things and say more words and gets along with the dog , a cairn terrier named Scruffy. I am waiting for the day she starts calling out CQ CQ or repeats the morse code beeps she hears on my Amateur radio. She already does the phone, answering machine and other sounds in the house. When she hangs on the side of the cage I get my nail file out and file down the sharp nails. Sooner or later , they all get fixed. She seems to care for her beak on her own. She bites hard on wood or her cage and trims off any part that gets too long or pointed.
