Our Style of Aikido is called Kaizen Aikido
My name is Steve Arnell and have practiced Aikido in Portsmouth since 1999 Aikido in portsmouth.
The art of Atemi? to Whack or not to Whack.
We in Aikido are told that Atemi is to distract the Opponent or uke,not always just to strike them.
over the years of training in aikido the use of uke is a great aid,
in training with formal postures and an uke who no's where he is going certainly helps you to complete your techniques in the dojo.
Now you are given a new Student or opponent, who has no idea where to fall or kneel, and is completely lost as the technique is applied, you will find 9 out of 10 times it just does not happen as when you are with a trained student.
Would this be the same as if you were pushed or attacked outside the dojo, ("you bet your zori it would") then all your years of training would not count for diddly, as their counter weight on your techinque would cause you to lose that limb you were holding or locking? Or they put to much weight over your arm before you turn and another kote-gashi lost, So where is all this going, well back to the Atemi, in most of the styles in Aikido i have had the pleasure to train in, the use of Atemi is not well utilised.
We have very strong origins in Daito-ryu Aikijujitsu, here the atemi is used more widely, we in Aikido have many options to use the Atemi with great effect on our opponent, I have also trained in the Art of Ninjitsu with a highly trained sensei, belive me when i say he uses his Atemi to effect? ouch, when training with his students i have found they are very ready for all kinds of techniques, as they blend or go with the lock or throw, but i have noticed that they as well as my own students react differently to the technique when you put in an atemi here or there when not expected,
this makes them put themselves off balance, leave a limb to lock, or drop a nice throw on them.
So the Answer to my question is yes you should use Atemi, with such a great effect it has on the opponent it stops you getting hit and sets up your technique perfectly.

What is Aikido
Aikido is a highly effective form of self-defense that teaches how to subdue even a much larger aggressor using minimum effort.
Aikido evolved from traditional Japanese warrior arts, but it is not only a science of self-defense; it is a discipline for perfecting the spirit.
Aikido practice is conducted in an energized, non-competitive environment.
Aikido believes that martial and personal development is best achieved by practicing cooperatively, with the practice partners helping each other learn its complex techniques.
It improves physical conditioning -- strength, balance flexibility, and coordination -- and mental conditioning -- self-confidence, concentration, alertness, intuitiveness and concern for others.
Aikido teaches how to blend with an attack and neutralize it without relying on brute strength. Consequently, Aikido is appropriate for men and women.
Portsmouth Aikido training nights are at Charles Dickens Centre lake road Monday 7:30-9pm and Wednesday 7:30-9:00 at Warrior Crafts Highlands road Southsea.
Why I Took Up Aikido in Portsmouth
The begining
I know Aikido is all about hip movement but for me i could do it without any pain, the hockey was pounding my hips squashing my hips the pain i had to stop. Aikido gave me a whole lease of life it also gave me suppleness my movements became more free.I used to play hockey about five times a week now nothing i had to do something.
A couple of work mates had been doing Yoshikan Aikido for a few years and asked me to go along at first i said no.To be truthful i was nervous new people new surroundings i had my hockey of 15 years now something completely different not even on the same lines. My mates started showing me some of their Kata (basic movements)which i picked up of a fashion but it gave me some confidence so i went along and since then i haven't looked back.
At first i trained twice a week Mondays and Wednesdays but i wanted more then found out that we also had two other clubs that i could train at so i started to go them one in Gosport the other in Bognor Regis.
Gosport was about a 25 minute drive from where i lived it was on a Friday same time as ours 7.30pm to 9pm.
The other one in Bognor Regis was a 45 minute drive from my house on a Sunday training was from 7pm to 9 pm so an extra half an hour i was in heaven.
I also went to various seminars mixed martial arts and my Aikido style and enjoyed all of them. They gave me an incite into the other martial arts.
I just couldn't get on with the kicky punchy styles and the grappling ones, yes i know in Aikido we do use a punch called atemi but its only to distract so we can get our technique on and of the ones i had a go in im glad my mates had been doing Aikido for i no i wouldn't of stayed as long as i have with Aikido.
